00:00Can the Danish model of migration become European?
00:07For years, Denmark was considered the black sheep of migration policy
00:12because of its highly restrictive approach to asylum rights.
00:16But as the bloc moved gradually to the right,
00:19the controversial ideas spoused by Copenhagen gained popularity
00:24and are now embraced by the political mainstream.
00:27I remember when I started in this post three years ago,
00:30I was in the GHA Council,
00:32and the Austrian minister was the only one who supported these notions back then,
00:36and now it seems there's a lot more countries that have rallied around the notion
00:42that we should get democratic control of the migrant flows,
00:45and I'm just very, very happy that this is the case.
00:49At the top of the to-do list is outsourcing.
00:52Denmark is leading the push to establish centers outside European soil
00:57to transfer rejected asylum seekers.
01:00The idea has been accepted by the European Commission
01:03but remains plagued by financial, technical and ethical questions.
01:09Humanitarian organizations' warm outsourcing will waste taxpayers' money
01:14and lead to human suffering.
01:16Amid the criticism,
01:18Copenhagen has reframed the conversation to argue that a hardline approach on migration
01:24is the only way for progressive politicians to remain in power.
01:29I believe if you're in a social democratic, a workers' party,
01:33championing especially skilled and unskilled workers,
01:37then I believe migration is often a burden for the constituents
01:41and working-class communities have taken the largest part of the task
01:47of integrating people in local communities and the labor market,
01:51and therefore if you're a party that are representing low-skilled, low-paid people,
01:56then you should be quite restrictive around migration.
01:59Denmark has a privileged position to promote his vision
02:03as it assumes the six-month presidency of the EU Council.
02:07Needless to say, migration is at the very top of the agenda.
02:11Thank you very much.
