00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown.
00:33No need to fear the letters, no need to panic about the numbers,
00:36and no need to get distressed about the Countdown conundrum.
00:40And to help us through first, it's Rachel Riley.
00:43Hi, Rich.
00:44Hi, Colin.
00:45Phobias.
00:46Mm-hmm.
00:47Embarrassing enough. Let me just get mine out of the way,
00:49because it is embarrassing.
00:49Daddy long legs.
00:51Ah, yeah.
00:52I know they can't bite you.
00:54They're very poisonous, but they can't bite you.
00:56But it's the way they go.
00:57You know, when they come towards you and everything's flailing,
01:02I just scream.
01:03So if they're on the wall and not moving, they're all right.
01:06But if they're flying and...?
01:08If they're on the wall, then I kind of leave the house
01:11in an orderly fashion.
01:12OK.
01:12But if they come towards me, it's like, you know Jurassic Park,
01:16when the velociraptors go after Jeff Goldblum?
01:19Yeah.
01:19It's exactly like that.
01:20Right, OK.
01:20Yeah, what about you?
01:21Picture the film now.
01:22Yeah.
01:23Who's going to play you?
01:24Well, I used to be scared of spiders on a similar theme.
01:28Have you ever tried aversion therapy,
01:29when they just make you look at the stuff,
01:32or touch the stuff, or do the stuff that scares you?
01:34Like, facing your fear.
01:35So we should basically get a load of daddy long legs
01:37and put them on your face until you're happy.
01:38But I did a photo shoot.
01:40It was Children's Cancer Month,
01:42and the idea was Brave for the Brave.
01:44So children who didn't have a choice about being brave
01:46because they had to face cancer,
01:48there was a little girl sitting there who'd face cancer
01:49holding a massive tarantula.
01:52And once there was a little girl holding a massive tarantula,
01:54and she was called...
01:55The tarantula was called something like Tracy.
01:58And that kind of took all the sting out of it.
02:00And in the end, I had this tarantula on my face,
02:02and I've got photos going from being really scared of all spiders
02:05in a couple of hours to having a tarantula on my face.
02:08I think we've got it.
02:09Well, Susie's going to go out,
02:10she's going to catch a few during the breaks,
02:12and by the end of it, we'll just shove you in a tank.
02:15You'll be fine.
02:15Well, listen, seeing as you've mentioned Susie Dent,
02:18the only thing she fears, misspelt words,
02:20mixed metaphors and bad grammar, Susie Dent.
02:25Just clap yourself, Susie.
02:27I will, I will.
02:27Wonderful, why not?
02:28It's been one of those afternoons.
02:30Beside her, she'll no fear whatsoever.
02:32in her debut in Dictionary Corner,
02:34radio on the BBC Asian network,
02:36TV in loads of places.
02:38It's Noreen Khan.
02:42Right, our champion so far has been frightfully impressive.
02:46Five wins up against some great competition as well.
02:50Don yesterday in particular.
02:51Now, you dropped on us yesterday.
02:53You were in the GB top today.
02:55You coached the flag football team,
02:57the GB flag football team, three times.
02:59What do you do for a day job?
03:01I'm a teacher.
03:02So I teach business, accounts and admin at high school level.
03:06Oh, right.
03:07Hence being so good at the numbers.
03:09Sure, yeah.
03:10Three wins away.
03:11Three programmes left this week.
03:13What a weekend ahead if you can just stay strong.
03:15I know, but only one away from going home.
03:18What do you fear?
03:19Not getting the conundrum?
03:20Yeah, not getting the conundrum,
03:22embarrassing myself a little bit.
03:23I don't feel a great deal.
03:25My partner's scared of enough things for the two of us,
03:27so it's fine.
03:28She locked two wasps in the house one day
03:30and left post-its in the door just saying,
03:32two wasps inside,
03:33I love you,
03:34may the odds be ever in your favour.
03:35So...
03:35Brilliant, I love it.
03:38Well, listen, the reason why I'm talking about irrational fears
03:41is Ian Goff, as well.
03:42There's welcome, Ian.
03:43Hi.
03:44Now, I could talk to you about loads of things.
03:47You work in an E-Wards,
03:48you do an admirable job,
03:50but really, I want to know about your irrational fear.
03:52Tell everybody.
03:52I've got a rational fear in nuns.
03:55Right, please explain.
03:57It was from when I was a child,
03:59watching a programme called Armchair Thriller,
04:01and they had a faceless nun.
04:03I think I was about eight,
04:04and it scarred me for life.
04:06See, if you're afraid of spiders,
04:09see, daddy long legs can pop up anywhere.
04:11Nuns really can't.
04:12Yeah, they can if you go to Rome.
04:14I took my wife to Rome,
04:16and they were everywhere.
04:17So why would you go to Rome, though,
04:19if you've got an irrational fear of nuns?
04:20I kind of feel like that's your fault.
04:22I was being romantic.
04:24So stay clear of churches,
04:26stay clear of nunneries.
04:28Yeah.
04:28But you never know.
04:29You've got to turn the corner in Tesco,
04:30and there you go.
04:32They were in the airport.
04:33Four of them,
04:34and I was petrified.
04:35Wow.
04:36I said, if they were sat next to me on the plane,
04:38I'd have to ask to move.
04:39Nowhere could I have sat there.
04:41Well, let's see if you can get into winning the habit today.
04:44Good luck to Ian and Alan.
04:49Right, Alan,

08:35Loads of lovely words like videos and mosher.
08:38If you're at a metal gig when Rachel goes to see Green Day,
08:41a little bit of moshing going on there.
08:44Shiver.

11:04Maybe.
11:05Go ahead.
11:06No.
11:07Halloumi.
11:09Halloumi.
11:10Very good indeed.
11:12Right, let's get back to the game where it actually counts.
11:15Let's go in.
11:15This is your moment.
11:16A consonant.
11:18Thank you, Ian.
11:18Thank you, Rich.
12:18What's your name's up, Alan?

12:24Tapiers.
12:25Yes, tapiers and Alan.
12:27Burpiest.
12:28Oh.
12:30Let's go over to an infamous belcher, Susie Dent.
12:33You can't be burpy, unfortunately.
12:38And did you say tapiers for seven?
12:40Yeah.
12:41It's just T-A-P-I-R-S.
12:43I'm sorry, Ian.
12:44Oh, you're talking about E-R-S.
12:44No, I'm so sorry.
12:46So, yeah, I have to disallow both, I'm afraid.
12:48Wow.
12:49Both Alan and Ian drawing a blank.
12:52What can you bring to the table, Noreen?
12:54Parties.
12:55Celebration time.
12:56Well done.
12:56Great seven.
12:58Alan, let's get more letters.

14:07And comrades.
14:11Anything else?
14:12I only got six.
14:13Dances.
14:14Dances.
14:14OK.
14:15That's a good score at home, but with these two, eight points each.
14:18Is there a nine?
14:19No, can't beat those two.
14:21Excellent.
14:21That's the best you could do.
14:22Ian is off the mark.
14:23Right, the only way is up, my friend.
14:28Let's get your first numbers of today.
14:31Can I have one large and five small, please, Rachel?
14:33Thank you, Ian.
14:34One from the top and five little coming up for you.
14:38And for this round, they are nine, seven, three, four, ten.
14:44And the large one, 100.
14:47And the target, one, nine, three.
14:49One, nine, three numbers up.
14:50One, nine, seven, three numbers up.
15:19Ian?
15:211-9-3.
15:23Yes, and Alan?
15:241-9-3.
15:24Off you go, Ian.
15:25Uh, 100.
15:2810 times 9 plus 3.
15:2910 times 9 for the 90.
15:31I guess that's the hardest part.
15:32Yeah.
15:33Exactly.
15:33There you go.
15:3410 points each.
15:3842 plays 18.
15:40So, after a blank start, part two proven way better for our challenger.
15:46But, Alan, it's your letters.
15:47Can I have a constant, please, Rachel?
15:48Thank you, Alan.
15:49G.
15:49And a vowel.

16:08And a final consonant.
16:10A final R.
16:11Half a minute.
16:12Aately unbeaten.

16:26A white mic.
16:30I'll see you next week.
16:32And a alleviate itself in response.
16:34PEN'S DOWN, ALAN?
16:44Eight.

16:46Eight.
16:47Alan?
16:48Sporting.
16:49Yeah.
16:49AIN?
16:50Partings.
16:51Partings and sporting, just how countdowns played.
16:54Two nice, strong eights.
16:56Noreen?
16:56Related to sporting, sprints, something that I'm not very good at.
17:00Not longer, but faster, and that's the main thing.
17:03If it was about the fastest words, you would win.
17:06Anything beyond an eight?
17:08Yes, actually, there is a nine in this one.
17:11Pastoring.
17:12So if you are the pastor of a church or a congregation, you pastor.
17:15It's so pastoring.
17:17That's a good one.
17:19So, for example, if you could be pastoring in the church,
17:23you'd have your congregation, maybe a few nuns either side of you.
17:29Put you off your stride again, Ian.
17:31We'll get some letters off you.
17:33Put that out of your mind.
17:35Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
17:37Thank you, Ian.
17:38G.
17:38Consonant.
17:41Z.

17:51Consonant.
17:53R.
17:55Vowel.
17:55U.
17:59Consonant.
18:00L.
18:03And another consonant, please.
18:06And the last one, C.
18:08Here we go.
18:09B.
18:10B.
18:12B.
18:13Bud.
18:14B.
18:15B.
18:17B.
18:17B.
18:21B.
18:22Tricky round, Ian?
18:41Five.
18:42Yeah, and Alan?
18:43Risky five.
18:45The risky five is?
18:46Carrot.
18:47Carrot.
18:48C-A-R-A-T.
18:50I think that applies to diamonds and what have you.
18:53Same word.
18:54Same word.
18:55Yeah, there you go.
18:56Well, that might be the best you can do, is Carrot.
18:59Let's see if we've got anything of any more worth.
19:02We've got six.
19:03Come on.
19:03Actual.
19:04Actual.
19:05Actual.
19:06So, simple.
19:07Sometimes it doesn't jump out at you, though, at all.
19:09No, it's really true.
19:10Actually, very good.
19:125531.
19:13Alan, let's go back to numbers.
19:15Can I go three large just to mix up?
19:17You can indeed.
19:17Three large and three little.
19:20I think that means you've got them on the run, Ian.
19:21Let's see.
19:22This round, we have five, one, two.
19:26And the big one, 75, 25 and 100.
19:30And your target, 685.
19:33Six, eight, five.
19:35Numbers up.
19:35I think that means you've got them on the run.
19:516, 8, 5, Alan.
20:07Just 6, 8, 7.
20:08And Ian?
20:09No, nothing.
20:10Nothing, OK?
20:10Not close enough.
20:11Don't worry, 6, 8, 7 will get you the seven points.
20:14100 plus 2.
20:16102.
20:17And then I'm going to do 5 plus 1.
20:195 plus 1 for 7.
20:21Sorry, 5 plus 1 is 6, even.
20:23Times them together.
20:24That's better, 6, 12.
20:25And then add the 75.
20:26And add the 75, it gets you to 2 above.
20:28OK, Rich.
20:30Well, with this one, you could say 75 plus 1, 76.
20:352 times 5 is 10.
20:37Times those together for 760.
20:40And then 100 less 25 is a 75 to take away for 6, 8, 5.
20:46Very good.
20:46Well done if you've got that at home.
20:51See if you can do the tea time teaser during our second break.
20:54Ray slogs.
20:56Slogs with one G.
20:57Ray slogs.
20:58This list might help you come to terms with things.
21:01This list might help you come to terms with things.
21:03It is, of course, a glossary.
21:27A glossary.
21:28Right, Alan looking to put the gloss on his sixth win.

24:02E.
24:02E.
24:03E.
24:03E.
24:05uh alan yeah stuck on seven and in uh seven i think he was he was thinking of risking something
24:19there wasn't he oh no well listen steady as you go what have you got in uh stonia okay yeah no
24:26worries with stonia as well susie any better there isn't mine there yeah actually yes desertion
24:34desertion when we had comrades earlier they don't desert but desertion for nine wonderful
24:39and we shall not desert a dictionary corner because it's time for origins of words well
24:48picking up on our phobias um and not your daddy long legs one because i don't actually have a
24:54name for that nor do i have a name for the phobia that i always mention that i have which is a fear
24:59of wrinkly fingers in water yes that's your fear yeah so if i go swimming i have my hands above
25:06above the water because i just hate anyway that's my one doesn't match up with your
25:11fascination with arson banger how come because he's wrinkly fingers
25:14that's very cruel um right essentially we all fear something maybe not quite as extreme as a phobia
25:25which simply goes back to the greek phobos meaning fear or flight a lot of us have aversions to things
25:31um rachel doesn't have a full-on phobia she said she has an aversion to tissues
25:35which i can completely understand sorry right even the even the thought of them uh will make her toes
25:42curl um but i'm going to give you some of the more unusual ones because essentially what happens
25:47is we borrow a word from ancient greek which will make it sound more um official and then we pair it
25:53with phobia and then it seems as i say as if it is is the kind of proper word but it's fine that's how
25:59english evolves and we invent things and so it goes on but sometimes we can't find the word that we need
26:05in ancient greek because they didn't really have such a thing so um the other fear that i have i'm not
26:10sure if it's a full-on phobia but a lot of people have a fear of clowns and that is cool row phobia
26:15only in ancient greece they didn't have clowns in the modern sense so we took the cool row which
26:20means stilt walker fear because they did have people who would walk around on still so we kind
26:25of get the nearest approximation that we can but here is some for you um there i don't see if you can
26:30guess this one colin araki butty raphobia well the rack has got to be some form of spider
26:36that's a rachner so forget okay so forget about that set once more araki which i will just tell
26:42you uh comes from the group for peanuts uh butty raphobia it's peanut butter phobia it's specifically
26:49the fear of sun pat peanut butter no it's the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth
26:54it's just not real uh there's a fear of ants which again i can understand my micophobia
27:00there's amphalacrophobia which is the fear of baldness okay not what you thought all right
27:05there's hippopotamonstros sesquipedaliophobia oh can we just have a round of words for saying that
27:12that's the fear of long words
27:13um hold on a second it's not really is it yes say it once more oh gosh okay hippopotamonstros
27:22sesquipedaliophobia oh wonderful how many letters is that i don't know i'll count them for you
27:26the break um but yeah lots and lots of strange phobias there on phallophobia fear of belly
27:31buttons you name it we have no you love them don't you i think you could do three times that
27:36amount so maybe we'll revisit it another week or another month absolutely love that thank you so
27:41much we'll be handing in the tissues at this rate but it's not over yet four more rounds to go
27:48uh no need for tears yet let's have nine letters uh can i have a consonant please rachel thank you ian
