00:30Hello, everybody. Welcome to Countdown, a show that has survived so much, if you think about it. Zillions of channels, the invention of the internet, smartphones, the complete proliferation of media. And still here, Rachel Riley. And here we go again. And the reason why I mention it at the top of the show, I just want to mark or celebrate or maybe lament the possible lost art of communication, which is letter writing.
00:56Because today's World Letter Writing Day. I was trying to look out the last time I wrote a letter, actually hand wrote a letter, and I think it was probably to Santa, which I haven't done that since 2015.
01:09So, when's your last letter?
01:11I think you'll be writing some more soon, Colin, because our lovely viewers, they love sending us handwritten letters.
01:16Yes.
01:17And they're so nice to read, especially, you know, someone's actually gone to the effort of getting the paper, taking the pen out, writing their thoughts, putting a stamp on it, going to the post box.
01:26So, especially when people sent me baby things that they'd knitted when my babies were born.
01:31So, if they were going to bother to, you know, make me something and write a nice letter, then I tried to write a thank you letter back.
01:36There you go, then. World Letter Writing Day today, and well faithfully in Dictionary Corner, as always.
01:43I'm guessing she's the proud owner of a quill and ink to this very day.
01:49Susie Dent is with us, and back again, which I'm sincerely happy about, is Russell Cain.
01:54Well, let's see if the writing is on the wall for our champion.
02:00Two wins so far for Shad Chokdar, and we can relax a little bit now and find out a little bit more about you.
02:07So much, actually, you're so busy all the time, but tell me about the Multi-Faith Network.
02:12I know you're involved with it. Tell me what they do.
02:14We looked at what happened with the George Floyd incident in America, and it was an eye-opener.
02:21And we were able to say, actually, what we need to do is ensure that everybody feels sort of incorporated and valued within the organisation.
02:30So, one of the outcomes from that was the formation of quite a few different staff networks, one of which was the Multi-Faith Network,
02:38which brings together many different religions and faiths, and it provides people with the opportunity to understand what's going on
02:46and potentially see when people are celebrating different festivals.
02:49So, it's just a nice way of providing a bit more information and something that's quite digestible for people.
02:55Brilliant stuff, Shad. On a hat-trick today, good luck with that.
02:58You're up against a 20-year-old student, Jack Davis.
03:01Really nice to have you here.
03:02Yeah, nice to be here, yeah.
03:03Good to see you've got the guns out.
03:05The rival Russell Cain.
03:07There's a lot of muscle in this studio, too.
03:08Well, we just got a bit of a pump on before the show, just to make sure we were quite ready.
03:11I'm feeling very inadequate here today.
03:15This isn't, even though you're only 20, it's not your first TV rodeo, is it?
03:19No, no. I've recently been on Bargain Hunt with one of my friends.
03:22How'd you do?
03:22We did OK, we did OK. It was a really good experience filming it and the stuff, so, yeah.
03:27I feel a little bit like an afterthought now.
03:30Have you had to choose between going on Bargain Hunt or Countdown?
03:33Oh, no contest, Countdown.
03:34OK, you can stay. You can stay.
03:35All right, good luck to Jack and Shad today.
03:40All right, here we go.

04:54Yeah, and Jack?
04:55Money.
04:56Boney and money.
04:57Susie?
04:58Unfortunately, Boney doesn't have an E in it, as you might expect,
05:01so it's a four rather than a five.
05:02Sorry about that, Shad.
05:04There you go.
05:04Good start for Jack.
05:05Five points to kick us off.
05:06Anything better?
05:07Well, Boney with an E.
05:09Boney M, of course, by the rivers of Babylon.
05:11Not allowed, as I'm guessing it's an F and M or something.
05:13It wouldn't be allowed in any way, shape or form.
05:15No, but Yeoman would be for six letters.
05:18Oh, enlightening.
05:19Let me take you back to medieval times.
05:21If you till the soil, you'd go ploughing like a medieval Yeoman.
05:24Yes, so we have Yeoman plural.

10:28Might need to at this stage, Jack.
10:30I'll risk an eight as well.
10:31You're both risking everything.
10:32Here, Shad, what's yours?
10:33I'm going to try it enclosed.
10:34In closed.

10:37Yeah, yeah.

10:40Yeah, it seems risky.
10:41It's simply a variant spelling of enclosed,
10:45and it's in the dictionary.
10:46So, very good.

10:47Eight points each, Russell.

12:19Yeah.
12:19Two rounds are exactly the same.
12:21Time for heroes in dictionary corner.
12:23We've got a political term you may be familiar with sleaze.
12:29Okay.
12:29It's sad that that's what everybody knew you meant before you said it.
12:33Oh, yeah.
12:33We know where you're going.
12:34Can you have a hazel?
12:35Is it like if more than one thing is hazel?
12:37Yeah, hazel trees.
12:39Okay.
12:39Sleaze and hazels would have given you six at home if you got that.
12:43Well done.
12:44Let's get some numbers and Jack, you're choosing.
12:46Just one from the top, please, Rachel.
12:48Thank you, Jack.
12:48One large.
12:50Five little coming up.
12:51And for this round, the five little numbers are three, one, two, six, and four.

13:03Numbers up.

13:37I've lost it.

13:53There you go.
13:53Some points on the board.
13:55But how do we get the 643, Rich?
13:57Well, I can get you to 644, but surprisingly, this one was actually impossible.
14:01Right.
14:02There you go.
14:02So as good as you can get is one away.
14:0540 plays, 13.
14:07Challenger with a commanding lead at this stage.
14:09As we chat again to Russell Cain.
14:12And you said to me, just ask me about anything.
14:14So I have to point out, either you're going to a neighbour's convention, or it's quite hot
14:22in the studio.
14:22And it is actually, I'm wearing a jumper and a t-shirt, but sweaty.
14:27This is the bane of my life, bane of my career.
14:29Every Edinburgh festival I've ever done, the main challenge was not the critics or the
14:31audience, it's the heat.
14:32I'm born hot.
14:35I was a sweaty baby.
14:36My daughter's inherited it, so don't tell me it's gender differences.
14:40I'm just a boiling hot human being.
14:42I don't own a coat.
14:43I have a V of sweat, even in the winter as I march down the street in December.
14:47But of course, you have to live your life by cold people standards.
14:50People who should have evolved out of the food chain millennia ago.
14:55I mean, how did you survive the ice age, your ancestors?
14:58And of course, Lindsay, my wife, you know, 24 degrees is where she's comfortable.
15:02I'm comfortable at 17.
15:04Wow.
15:04Why can't we just compromise at 20?
15:06But as soon as my back's turned, you know the thermostat wars, about this time of year,
15:10end of August, beginning of September, the thermostat wars start.
15:13As soon as I even pop out to the shops, bang, it's up to 25.
15:16When I get back, there's geckos warming up on the breakfast bar, locusts evolving in the tumble dryer.
15:21I like to be freezing cold at night.
15:23I've got an air conditioner that blows on my face, thin duvet, and I just sleep like that,
15:26going hot with an ice cloud.
15:28You couldn't be sitting beside anyone more different than Susie, who I think is reptilian.
15:34You can warm yourself up.
15:36You've got jackets, you've got options.
15:37What options?
15:38What do I skin myself?
15:39I can't go any cooler.
15:40Look, I have no options.
15:43It's not fair.
15:43But you are sitting right now, and I'm with you, I've got the sweaty palms,
15:47and everything sitting here, like, we're probably discussing.
15:50I bet that Susie's got a hot water bottle on the table.
15:53I've actually got a heat pad this time.
15:55Oh, you've upgraded.
15:57Yeah, I'm just, I think I'm just, I'm quite skinny, and I just, yeah, I've always been Nesh, always.
16:03Lindsay has a heated pad on her side of the bed, a heated blanket.
16:06You know, like a kitten that's being kept alive at the vets?
16:09That's what her side of the bed is like.
16:11And I have, like, ice blasting on me.
16:13Yeah, yeah.
16:14Well, listen, Russell, well done for causing about 640,000 arguments at home right now with that.
16:21Thank you so much.
16:24Right, Chad, we need to heat this game up.
16:27Off you go.
16:27Some letters.
16:29May I have a consonant?
16:30You may, indeed.

17:42It is.
17:43They're all lovely sevens.
17:44There's teaming as well.
17:46Teaming.
17:46Teaming with sweat in this studio.
17:48Indeed.
17:48Yeah.
17:49While Susie shivers in the corner.
17:53Right, Jack.

23:25Absolutely brilliant.
23:26There we go.
23:30Almost trampled over you there to congratulate you.
23:33Trampled is another eight.
23:35There you go.
23:35Imparted, trampled, 69, plus 34.
23:40Shad, your letters.
23:41May I have a consonant?
23:42Thank you, Shad.
23:43G.
23:44And another one?
23:46T.
23:47And a third one?
23:49S.
23:50And a vowel?
23:52O.
23:53And another one?
23:54E.
23:55And a third?
23:57A.
23:57And a consonant?
23:59P.
24:00And another consonant?
24:02F.
24:03And can I finish off with a vowel?
24:05And finish with E.
24:0730 seconds.
24:08E.
24:0830 seconds.
24:09E.
24:10PANSTEIN SHOT
24:40Just a 7
24:41And Jack
24:42I'll stick with a 7
24:43OK, Shad
24:44Postage
24:45Yeah, and Jack
24:46Also postage
24:47OK, there you go
24:48Let's mail that one over
24:49Yeah, postage 7
24:50I think there's another 7
24:52Apogee
24:52Which is like the high point of something
24:54It's an absolute crest
24:55Exactly
24:56Put the S on
24:57Give you a 7
24:58Apogees
24:58Apogees, yeah
24:59Apogees for 7
25:00But nothing above that
25:01So you couldn't have done better, Shad
25:02But the gap remains the same
25:04So four big rounds coming up
25:06But certainly not over yet
25:08But it is time for Origins Awards
25:09I was talking yesterday about mutts and moggies
25:13And we're going to stick with cats today
25:15Your favourite animal, Colin
25:16Because you were deeply allergic to them
25:19But hopefully you still can admire them from afar
25:22But English certainly has admired them
25:24In that it is absolutely packed full
25:26Of idioms related to cats
25:28And some of them date back literally millennia
25:31So I'm going to start with
25:32Cat got your tongue
25:34Cats in ancient Egypt were particularly revered
25:37It is said
25:38And one horrible story suggests
25:41That anyone who displeased the king
25:43Going back all the way to ancient Egypt
25:46Would then have the sort of offender's tongue
25:48I suppose cut out
25:49And fed to a pet cat
25:51Rather nasty
25:51But by far the favourite theory
25:53Which again is slightly dark
25:55It's the cat of nine tails
25:56Which was a popular horrible weapon
25:59Of punishment that was used aboard ships
26:02Which was a lash with nine
26:04Sort of a whip really with nine lashes
26:05So very, very painful indeed
26:07Like herding cats
26:09So trying to sort of control the situation
26:11If it's like herding cats
26:12It's usually fairly impossible
26:13And that may go back to Monty Python
26:16And the life of Brian
26:17Because certainly in one of the scripts
26:19They talk about herding cats
26:21Which I love
26:22So they have left their mark
26:24In many ways
26:25But also upon the language
26:26And let the cat out of the bag
26:28Famously
26:29It's slightly related to
26:31Don't buy a pig in a poke
26:33Because a poke was a pocket
26:34It's related to that actually
26:36Or a bag
26:37And the idea is that
26:38If you go to a market
26:39You thought you were buying a piglet
26:40Which would be quite valuable
26:41When you got home
26:43You discover that it is a cat
26:45The cat is out of the bag
26:46And you haven't bought a pig in a poke
26:49Lovely
26:49Right, thank you very much
26:54Back to the game
26:56And you're running out alive
26:57Shad
26:57Four rounds to go
26:59And it's Jack picking the letters
27:00Consonant please, Rachel
27:01Thank you, Jack
27:02H
27:02And another
27:04D
27:06And a vowel please
27:08U
27:09And a consonant
27:10G
27:12And another
27:14L
27:16And a vowel
27:17O
27:19And a consonant
27:20R
27:22And a vowel
27:24E
27:26And a final consonant please
27:28A final L
27:3030 seconds
27:31もちろん
27:32Is
27:34A whistle
27:34And a tiếng
28:00Right, Shad.
28:03Just a six.
28:04Just a six, Jack.
28:05I'll stick to a six, then.
28:06OK, what's your six, Jack?
28:07Rolled.
28:08And Shad.
28:10OK.
28:12Both with the same word.
28:14Said you stick with a six.
28:15Did you have a risky seven?
28:16Yeah, roughed.
28:17Yes, it is in.
28:18So what have you got in Dexter and Corner?
28:20That was it.
28:21I mean, to me, roughed came before rolled.
28:23But that's my upbringing.
28:25There you go.
28:26What have we got now?
28:2735 points, the difference.
28:29So it'll have to be a huge round from you, Shad.
28:31But you never know.
28:32Let's get some letters.
28:33May I have a consonant?
28:34You may.
28:36T.
28:37And another one?
28:39N.
28:39And a third?
28:41R.
28:42And a fourth?
28:44B.
28:45And a vowel, please?
28:47A.
28:48And another one?
28:49I.
28:50And another one?
28:51O.
28:53And a consonant?
28:56R.
28:57And a vowel, please?
28:58And the last one.

29:01Last letters.
29:02And a vowel, please.
29:17And a vowel, please?
29:20No, no.
29:21No, no.
29:22How'd you get on, Jack?
29:33Seven.
29:34Seven, and Shad?
29:35I have to risk a nine, don't I?
29:37You'll have to risk a nine.
29:38What is the seven?
29:39Trina.
29:40And what is the risky nine?
29:42Barrytona.
29:43Barrytona.
29:43I'm going to have Barrytones.
29:45Oh, Barrytone, brilliant eight, but there's no Barrytona.
29:49I'm so sorry, Shad.
29:50OK.
29:51I'm lucky.
29:52Had to go for it.
29:53Of course.
29:53Absolutely no good to you.
29:55You needed to score the 18, so I love the audacity of going for Barrytona.
30:01Yeah.
30:01Just one letter off.
30:03So, Barrytone, at least, even though it's not going to score for Shad,
30:06because they're called Barrytona.
30:07As good as we'll get.
30:08Yeah, it was worth a punt from the halfway line, sadly.
30:12Obtainer as well, I think.
30:14That'll give you another 18.
30:15OK.
30:15Obtainer.
30:16But there's no nine, we can see.
30:17Baritone, but a bum note for Baritoner as we go to our last numbers.
30:22And it's you, Jack.
30:23I'll just have one from the top, please, Rachel.
30:25Thank you, Jack.
30:26Foot off the pedal.

30:29And they are seven, nine, five, one, six.
