00:00that day I felt like I lost my entire immediate family that I lived with for years I just felt
00:11like I didn't even have a mother anymore I don't feel bad for her for being in prison because of
00:19what she's done but I just I really want my mom back and that's kind of what I'm looking for
00:28whenever I talk to her
00:30hi mom can you hear me yeah I'm just one question was she trying to run away from you is that why
00:41she was on the porch I guess so I yeah did did they suffer at all or do you know I'm sorry baby
00:53I'm very sorry I mean she she took two lives and she can't ever get those back and no one's ever
01:06gonna forget that or forgive her for it yeah I've never seen this photo
01:23I never saw what she looked like that day
01:28she looks lifeless
01:38she has the face of my mother but I don't feel like her soul is there
01:47her so
01:53I don't know.
02:23I grew up in Hot Springs, Arkansas for most of my life.
02:34My early childhood was definitely positive.
02:37My mother and I, we were pretty close.
02:40My dad wasn't really around very much.
02:42He's a truck driver, and he would be home maybe once every two weeks, but it didn't seem like there was any problems going on ever.
02:50When it was me, her, and my dad, we were a pretty happy family.
02:56Nothing really seemed wrong, usually, but I didn't really see it.
03:01But there were problems, for sure.
03:03There was one night that I was just kind of doing my own thing as a typical kid, and then just all of a sudden, my mother started yelling at my dad.
03:31I'll punch you!
03:34When I first heard it, I was in the other room, and I just peeked around the corner, and I didn't know what was going on.
03:41I didn't know why.
03:43After all I've done!
03:44She was standing over him, and while he was sitting in a chair, he was completely silent.
03:50He didn't try to stand up for himself or argue back or anything.
03:54You're going to just sit there?
03:55And then she threw her ring across the room.
03:58Here.
03:59Here.
03:59Here.
04:00And that scared me a little bit.
04:09I saw my mom's face during that moment, and her facial expression just completely changed into something I had never seen before.
04:17And I was so confused.
04:20I was just so angry at my mom, because I had never seen her like that, ever be mean to my dad over anything.
04:30I didn't understand it.
04:31Get out!
04:32Get up and get out!
04:35Get out!
04:39Later on, my mother told me that she found out that my dad was having an affair with another woman, and that he was about to actually have a child with her.
04:49And I was completely shocked.
04:53She was, you know, blaming this other woman.
04:57She was also gathering in her mind that my mom and my dad were meant to be together, and nothing in this world could separate them.
05:08That was the beginning of my mom's obsession, really, of my dad and the other woman being together, and things just kind of went down from there.
05:38So, this is me and my little sister, Megan.
05:43It's the day after she was born.
05:47I think it was the very first time of me holding her, too.
05:51I was just ecstatic.
05:54You know, I saw my dad walking down the hallway with my little sister in his arms, just the biggest smile on his face.
06:02It was a really good day.
06:04I was about nine and a half years old in this picture.
06:07That was what I had always wanted, was a close sibling.
06:13And I was just really ready for the future.
06:19That's kind of what I was, you know, was in my head all day that day.
06:28I am trying my best to hang on to the good memories because it seems like the majority of her life was just all,
06:36it was all bad.
06:39And I couldn't do anything to change it.
06:41I'm sorry.
07:00I couldn't get her out of that situation because I was a kid myself and I didn't know what to do.
07:16And I didn't realize how, just how toxic it was in that household before it was too late.
07:26It was after my sister was born, my mom told me that she planned on having the baby in order to keep my dad.
07:40Because she had the feeling that he was kind of trying to be on his way out of marriage, out of the house, and to leave my mom and me.
07:51So, she had to find a way to try to lock him in.
07:55So, it was only a year after my sister was born that I was just in my room doing my thing.
08:10All of a sudden, she kind of bursts into my room in tears and sits down on my bed with me.
08:20And she told me my dad pretty much just made it official, like, I'm leaving, I don't love you anymore.
08:29He hadn't really loved her since I was born and he only stayed because of me.
08:33She blamed the breakup of their marriage on this other woman.
08:38She's a boss.
08:40This other woman was just trying to pull him out of his family to be with her.
08:49At the time, I did want to comfort her.
08:52I just didn't really know how because I was so young.
08:56I knew she was upset and it wasn't just her fault.
09:00But then, my mother's facial expression changed quite a bit.
09:07She needs to know how this feels.
09:10She started talking about the other woman.
09:14Put her in her place.
09:15And what she wanted to do to kind of get back at her, to hurt her.
09:20And what she told me was she had the idea of throwing nails, like a big box of nails in her driveway.
09:27My mother was escalating with her anger and her violence.
09:33Somebody has to.
09:34I was very scared whenever my mom told me because even though everything had gone on between my mom and my dad and the affair,
09:47I've always thought my mom as being this loving, caring mother that would never try to hurt anybody else in any sort of way.
09:55For my mom to think of revenge, is this her true self?
10:01Almost every day, she would be complaining to me and venting.
10:06She just couldn't let go of the idea to hurt her.
10:11And it had me really, really scared, honestly, because I didn't know what was going to happen next.
10:17So, this picture is of my grandmother and my baby sister, Megan.
10:33At this point, I think my sister's about three months old.
10:36And it's right around the time that my grandma first got to meet her, too.
10:42She loved her new grandchild.
10:46She loved her new grandchild.
10:49So, she definitely wanted to cherish the time that she had as a baby.
10:53We actually had to move in with my grandmother after my mom and dad divorced because we couldn't afford to live on our own.
11:02And it was definitely rough at the beginning, trying to adjust to it.
11:09Not only that, it was just my grandma was always in pain from her health problems and what she was going through.
11:15And, you know, she was getting older in age, in her early 70s.
11:24I mean, we loved each other.
11:26And she would already know that she would protect me in any way possible.
11:31But we could never afford to move out of my grandma's house.
11:34So, that kind of built up inside of my mom.
11:37And it definitely led to my mom and my grandma butting heads a lot.
11:42My sister definitely didn't have a great childhood because of my mother.
12:04She just gave in to her anger and punished her, spanked her, yelled at her.
12:13It was a daily thing.
12:15Can we go play?
12:17I'm busy.
12:20My mom didn't want to go outside with her to watch her and play.
12:24My mom would always just put it off, you know, like go sit down, play with her toys, watch TV.
12:31Just don't be in my way, don't get on my nerves.
12:34It always seemed like my mom was at her wit's end.
12:40And anything that my sister did, it was wrong.
12:45My mom was always screaming at Megan.
12:48What did I say about toys on the table?
12:52We were always walking on eggshells because my mom was so frustrated and angry all the time.
12:58Can't you just be quiet?
13:00You know, she was a very serious woman whenever she would get on to us.
13:06And I hated seeing my sister go through that.
13:10So I felt like I couldn't talk to her or bring anything up to her that might frustrate her even more.
13:20Because I felt like she was going to lash out at me.
13:22And you!
13:24I was scared of my mom.
13:25Don't you know better than her?
13:26It was just, it got to the point where I didn't know how to be comfortable in the house.
13:32Because I didn't know how my mom was going to react.
13:35I did love to see my dad because it was something different.
13:52I could get away from my typical everyday life at home.
13:57And we usually went out and did something.
14:00He would take us out to eat and maybe go go-karting or something.
14:03But I always dreaded having to come back home because for the rest of the night, my mom would not stop asking about him.
14:18How was it?
14:20Like, what exactly did y'all do?
14:22Did he say anything about me?
14:25What did he say?
14:26What'd y'all talk about?
14:28Not much.
14:29We were trying to visit as father and daughters.
14:35We weren't talking about my mother.
14:38And that made her feel really, like, I would say enraged, you know?
14:47And she wouldn't let it go.
14:49Good night.
14:49She wanted to know every single detail of what we did and what we talked about.
15:00And it had nothing to do with her.
15:02And as time went on, you know, at first it was the anger and blaming my dad and my stepmom for everything that happened.
15:12And she still couldn't accept that, you know, my dad was never going to come back to her.
15:22And she just went deeper and deeper into her depression over it.
15:38So for Megan's birthday, we decided to do it at a little park in town.
15:44We invited my dad, and I didn't have any idea that my stepmom was going to be there.
15:51Almost the entire time, my dad was talking to my stepmom, and that really frustrated my mom.
15:57My mom was very, very tense because she was frustrated with the whole scenario, and she couldn't do anything about it.
16:09But it was very unhealthy how much she was trying to hold on to him.
16:15And she just shouldn't have been doing that.
16:18Towards the end, though, whenever we were wrapping it up, my stepmom, I think she had said a few words under her breath.
16:30You know, I'm not sure what exactly it was, but it was towards my mother.
16:33She always liked that.
16:37And it just completely enraged her.
16:40And she went to the back of our SUV and pulled out a big wooden rod that I didn't even know was there, but she had it in her hand.
16:54You got something to say?
16:57Ready to strike her with it, and it really scared me.
17:01It scared everyone.
17:02I'm right here.
17:05You know, I couldn't stop her from doing anything.
17:07I was just, you know, pleading to her, Mom, please don't do this.
17:13And my dad noticed that, and he, you know, threatened to call Department of Human Services on my mom.
17:20And my mom just kind of raced back in the car.
17:25And my mom still has that wooden pole in her hand.
17:28She threw it pretty hard back into the SUV, and it almost hit my sister in the head.
17:37And it was just very scary to me, and I didn't know what to do.
17:45Get in.
17:46I was upset because I was scared of what just happened and what's going to happen next.
17:53I had no idea.
17:55I don't think we ever really talked about it after that day.
17:58It was just kind of shoved to the side after that.
18:02This was the first time that I really saw my mom act this way, as violent as she did.
18:10But it definitely wasn't the last time.
18:12So eventually my mom did start dating again.
18:22She got on a few, you know, dating websites and met a couple of different men.
18:28And I was definitely happy that she was trying to move on from my dad and not just spend all of her time at home.
18:38My mom felt like my grandmother was always in some kind of pain because of her health.
18:44So it became more and more where she was asking me to babysit every night, every weekend.
18:53You look nice.
18:54I had kind of a long-term boyfriend in high school, and we hadn't seen each other outside of school for a couple of weeks.
19:03So I asked, like, hey, I haven't seen him in a while outside of school.
19:09Can we hang out?
19:11And my mom, there was no hesitation about it.
19:15She said, no, I'm going out and doing things with my boyfriend.
19:18I tried to tell my mom what I wanted and how I felt.
19:26And she just snapped back at me every time saying that I need to do what I'm told.
19:34It's not a discussion.
19:35She told me that I needed to take responsibility, but with it being my sister, you know, it wasn't my child.
19:46You know, it was hers.
19:47I felt like it was supposed to be more her responsibility.
19:51She put her needs and wants above mine.
19:53So eventually, she wouldn't be gone for just the evenings.
20:00She would be gone for a couple of days.
20:05And I would just have to keep staying home with my sister, and I couldn't really go out and do anything.
20:14I did want her to be happy, but at the same time, she had been gone so often.
20:21I felt like I was running the house.
20:23Over time, it just kept getting more and more intense between us.
20:41After a while, me and my grandmother agreed that he needs to be out of our lives.
20:48What is that?
20:49It was very difficult for me because I knew that she would just push my opinion to the side.
20:58Mom, he's not good for you.
21:00You haven't a damn clue what's good for me.
21:02But I really did communicate with her that I don't think that he is right for our family.
21:10You brat!
21:11It just doesn't sit right with her, I guess.
21:16And she got pretty furious with me at that moment.
21:19She started screaming at me, which really frightened me.
21:23I was trying to defend myself, but I couldn't do it without crying.
21:27I couldn't keep my emotions from pouring out.
21:30How are you doing this?
21:32It escalated pretty quickly.
21:34Shut up!
21:36And then she pushes my seats.
21:39I tipped over, but I almost hit my head in the side of the fridge.
21:44It was very shocking to me.
21:49I really had no words after that.
21:51Like, I was just flustered by the whole thing.
21:55I was definitely thinking, like, how can my mother do this?
22:01She didn't apologize for what she did, and I was really kind of giving up on having a good relationship with my mother.
22:13I was at the point where I didn't really trust my mother.
22:17I didn't know what to do, you know.
22:18I didn't know what to say to her to get her to try to change.
22:23That day in the kitchen was really the first time that she was ever that violent towards me.
22:32And I was very, very deathly afraid that it was going to happen sometime soon again.
22:42After that incident, I didn't feel safe in that house.
22:53During that time that she was gone, it was honestly very, very peaceful in the house.
23:01It was just me and my grandmother.
23:04You know, I went to school every day.
23:05We just came home.
23:07I mean, I missed my sister, of course.
23:09But overall, it was pretty nice, honestly.
23:13It was just me and my grandma in the house for those two weeks.
23:16So when she came back, I was a little disappointed.
23:18I expected her to just grab some more of her things and go back with her boyfriend.
23:30And that's what she said that she was doing at first.
23:33Looks like we're here to stay.
23:36But she had admitted that she was actually moving back and that her boyfriend had basically kicked her out.
23:45So my mom asked me if she could sleep on my bed and she was all dirty and sweaty and she didn't want to take a shower.
23:54And I asked her to either take a shower or I can change my sheets again.
24:00And that made her snap immediately.
24:05How dare you speak to me that way?
24:08Don't want to help your own mother.
24:11Hey!
24:12Look at me when I'm speaking to you!
24:15She basically was like, why did you say that?
24:19Why are you treating me this way?
24:22Why don't you just go live with your dad?
24:25And I was honestly okay with it.
24:27You know, I wanted to be out of the house.
24:30So I went ahead and started packing my things.
24:33And that was one of those times that I, you know, stood up for myself.
24:37Hey!
24:37And she didn't like it.
24:39Listen to me!
24:40I'm speaking to you!
24:41And it made my mom so angry that she grabbed an empty beer bottle that was on the side of the table, lifted it over my head, and threatened to hit me with it.
24:51Go ahead!
24:52At that point, I'm so scared that she's actually going to do something to me.
24:59And I didn't know what else to do, and I didn't want to stay and find out.
25:06Go ahead!
25:08Run!
25:09Get out of here!
25:10Don't say another one!
25:11I knew that this house was a very toxic place, and I knew I needed to get out of there.
25:17I was 18, and I had no obligation to ever live there again.
25:23So I took my chance to get out of there, and I knew it was for the best.
25:28I realized the best time was when she was picking up my sister from getting off the bus, which gave me about a 10-15 minute window to go in and just grab my things and leave.
25:57So that's what I did.
26:01During that moment, whenever I was in the house, I noticed that my sister had actually ran past my mom to get home.
26:11And I was able to, you know, tell her, hello, you know, I love you, I miss you, you know, I'm sorry things had to happen like this.
26:21You know, I'll see you later.
26:24And that was it.
26:27I do think about that moment a lot.
26:32That was the last time I ever got to tell her I love her and hug her.
26:37It was hard to leave my sister there.
26:41I knew my mom didn't treat her very well either.
26:46Looking back on that moment now, it makes me, you know, really sad that that was the last moment.
26:53I, you know, I know I could have come back and, you know, I feel like I could have done more.
27:02But at the same time, I didn't know how to.
27:05I didn't know how to get around my mom and, you know, just do better for my sister.
27:13I'm going to say this.
27:26God does not like a marriage that is split.
27:32Once you marry, you're married for life.
27:35Okay.
27:36Your dad and I have been split up for seven years.
27:42She's acting like a completely different person than what I knew.
28:00I felt like maybe, maybe I should record this in case something does happen and we need some kind of explanation or, you know, something to, to show, like, how it was leading up to what had happened.
28:19Even if I didn't know that that was going to happen the very next day.
28:23I didn't quite understand him because he was, he was very distraught and, um, he was saying, you, you need to come to your, to, um, your grandmother's right away.
28:43Something happened.
28:43And I'm like, what, what, what happened?
28:46I don't know what's, what's going on.
28:48Is there an emergency?
28:49And he is in tears.
28:51I just didn't understand what was going on.
28:56And, um, he briefly told me that your mom killed your sister and your grandma.
29:12Just in that moment, I could not feel anything.
29:17I, I didn't believe it was real at first.
29:21I was like, am I dreaming?
29:25And I just, I feel like I'm melting.
29:28I don't, I can't feel anything.
29:30I can't think of anything else.
29:32I'm just bawling and in tears because I don't understand how any of this could have happened.
29:38And so I go ahead and call my dad and I tell him, um, what happened, um, that my mom killed my sister and my grandmother.
29:51And he, uh, he, uh, I've never heard my, my dad ever, ever in tears until that day.
29:58And I hate that I had to be the one to tell him.
30:01Y'all clear the house before we do anything else?
30:17Two people covered the house and two people drove the dog?
30:24Might, might help us if we don't know where this at.
30:26And he, uh, based in 10 blocks, right?
30:29Contain you now.
30:32Roger, Captain.
30:41I'll go ahead, sir.
30:43Thank you, Captain.
30:43Yes, sir.
30:48Who's got it, Captain?
30:49Do you have anything on you?
31:12Yeah, I had never seen that before.
31:16All right, stand up.
31:17I could see all the, you know, all the blood all over her, just.
31:25Yeah.
31:29Never thought I would see that.
31:33After she did what she did, she was, um, she went underneath the house to try to set the, the rest of the house on fire.
31:41It seemed like she knew what she was doing because she had that plan and she was, it seemed like she was,
31:47she was possibly trying to cover her tracks.
31:48Yeah.
31:50I've never been in camp here with cats in my life.
31:54No, get here.
31:55Get used to it.
31:55Me and my mother, um, the night before, um, everything happened, she was telling me that there was an emergency and I need to come home right away.
32:16And I was telling her, well, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm not coming home right now, um, unless there's someone that's injured or dying.
32:24Listen to me, Kristen.
32:28Come home, listen to what I said.
32:30I can't, I cannot come home right now, Mom.
32:32Um, she was trying to get me to come home more than anything, um, and I don't exactly know what for at the time.
32:43I'm dead serious, Kristen.
32:47If you just listen to me.
32:49You're making absolutely no sense.
32:52Yes, I am making sense.
32:53And I told her time and time again, no, I'm, I'm done with living there with, um, just under that toxic roof.
33:04It wasn't healthy and I didn't want to be around it anymore.
33:08And she seemed to be getting completely outraged because I wasn't listening to her.
33:14You're just making no sense.
33:16To you, I'm not making any sense.
33:18To me, I know I am.
33:20Me and my dad spoke about, um, my mother because my mom had called him, um, prior to calling me to, um,
33:30she was trying to get his help to apparently come get, come get the Christmas tree to help her put it up.
33:38That, that was a lie.
33:40And we knew that after everything had happened because the Christmas tree was up in the house.
33:45She was, um, ultimately trying to get both of us there.
33:51Never in a million years would have expected her to do what she did.
33:55This picture is of the funeral.
34:11I had two pictures, um, printed out when my, my favorite picture of my sister that I took.
34:18And really the only decent picture that I could find of my grandmother.
34:26This day, it was a, it was a very hard day for me because, you know, it was, you know,
34:33it was me trying to say goodbye, um, and everyone else trying to say goodbye.
34:39But it, you know, I never actually got that chance to, to tell them bye.
34:47There was a lot of people there that I didn't know.
34:49So I was still really uncomfortable.
34:52But thankfully, my family that was, um, around me made it a little easier to, to deal with.
35:01It was definitely difficult to do.
35:03Were you just trying to relieve her of her pain, I guess?
35:29Was that what you're...
35:29I guess, I, I don't know, I was just hurting because I know she was hurting every day.
35:37You know, I just hated to see her in pain.
35:41But Megan wasn't in pain.
35:42No, Megan wasn't in pain, but I was irritated with Megan because...
35:48Were you planning on doing anything to me, though?
35:56I, I don't know, it just came, Kristen.
35:58Why were you trying to get me over the night before?
36:01I don't know, I was just angry.
36:06Why were you, uh, trying to get Dad over?
36:14I had hopes to getting back with your Dad, I don't know.
36:17I still loved the man.
36:24To me, it was like she was using him.
36:27She doesn't love the man.
36:30You know?
36:31She, uh, she took my life away, Kristen, and everything I, that ever amounted to me away.
36:40I, I mean, I know my mom has always hated my stepmom since the day that, you know, she found out about their affair.
36:56It didn't really make sense for her to bring that up when I, all I was thinking about was, you know, I was grieving about my sister and my grandmother that I just lost.
37:08And I was talking to the person that took them away from me.
37:12It, it, I mean, it shows me that she never really, truly cared about anybody but herself.
37:22I, I hate the fact that my sister was running away, that she just, she saw it coming and she couldn't get away from it.
37:31You know, my grandmother, she was, I believe she was in bed when it happened and I think she was asleep.
37:36So, um, you know, I, I hope it happened fast for her and that she didn't suffer.
37:42But my sister, I, I think she went through a lot of pain, um, in the few last moments that she had.
37:49And I hate it.
37:53I just, I sometimes wish that my mom just had to go through the same thing that she put them through.
38:00Just so, you know, she could realize, really realize the, the pain that she caused.
38:08Because it's just, it's not fair and they did nothing wrong.
38:12I want her to hear from me that she completely ruined my life and she flipped it completely upside down.
38:23And she is never going to get that forgiveness from me, even if she were to beg.
38:30So, this picture is of me and my little sister.
38:53I believe it was the first day of my sister going to kindergarten.
38:57And it was the first day of 10th grade for me.
39:01So, we were both pretty excited just to have each other on the bus going to school and, you know, getting to share that little bit of experience with each other.
39:11Yeah, we were really happy.
39:13It was, it was a bonding moment for me and her.
39:15But she didn't get to do a whole lot of growing up, whereas, you know, I did.
39:21And it makes me really sad that she didn't get to.
39:24It is hard to reflect on these moments because, you know, she is gone now.
39:31But, but at the same time, you know, it, we were happy in that moment.
39:36And, you know, I didn't, I didn't want it to end.
39:43I feel like I, we both missed out on a lot.
39:51I mean, if I could go back and talk to her one more time, you know, I would probably tell her I love her about 50 times before I couldn't anymore.
40:01You know, she, she just had so much life and it was taken away.
40:17I hope that people that watch this, you know, really try to pay attention a little bit more to their loved ones and make sure that they're doing okay.
40:29Because you really never know what's going to happen and you never know who you're going to lose in, in just an instant.
40:41I'll have my, my moments where, you know, I'm grieving a little bit more on some days than others.
40:49And it, you, you can never predict it.
40:51You know, it's just going to happen when it, when it wants to.
40:54So, but I, you know, I, I know I'm going to be okay and I know I'm going to, you know, live a, live a good life after, after everything's happened to me.
41:04I'm going to make it that way.
41:059-1-1-1, what's the address of your emergency?
41:18I need an officer.
41:20There's blood all over the floor.
41:21He took off with his soon-to-be ex-wife.
41:24My life today, it's not what I imagined it would be.
41:27I have memory loss.
41:28I have a traumatic brain injury.
41:30I hate that I'm going to have to live with this for the rest of my life.
