00:00Around the world, cruise ships are getting bigger, bolder
00:05Cheers, bye bye England
00:06and busier. These vast floating cities run 24 hours a day
00:11We go back to back with cruises. We don't take a break at all
00:15Carrying thousands of passengers and crew
00:18That's a big job
00:19Wow
00:20and offering everything from fine dining
00:22Teast explosion, I like that
00:24to full-scale theatres
00:27They're built for adventure and designed for luxury
00:31I could get used to this
00:33Cheers
00:34This year, a world-leading cruise line is back sailing a full season from the UK
00:39for the first time in a decade
00:42Meet the MS Neustadtendam
00:45Weighing 100,000 tonnes
00:48with 12 passenger decks
00:50Well ready for this
00:5112 restaurants curated by world-renowned chefs
00:54That's what I'm talking about
00:56Ooh, it's a buzz
00:57And a full program of entertainment
00:59We are expected to do everything perfectly at all times
01:02And excursions day and night
01:05At the same time, her sister ship, the MS Rotterdam
01:08is cruising through the Americas
01:10Nearly 4,000 people on board
01:13Who's excited?
01:14A 760-seat theatre
01:1610 minutes, mic check please, mic checks, 10 minutes
01:19And all the onboard amenities you'd expect for a perfect holiday at sea
01:23Let's go
01:24Oh, it's gorgeous
01:25Lovely
01:26Yes, let's go
01:27Over the course of the cruising season
01:29We'll be following both ships
01:31As they travel around the Americas
01:33North Africa
01:35And Europe
01:37This time, the Rotterdam cruises into Columbia
01:42For an excursion with a difference
01:45Organised chaos
01:47And in Europe
01:50Crew on the new Stattendam
01:52Celebrate Dutch style
01:53With the biggest party the ship has ever planned
01:56Help me welcome your food and beverage team
02:18Passengers on the cruise voyaging around the Caribbean
02:21Are settling in well to luxury life
02:26Sailing on a deluxe voyage across shimmering seas
02:30The Super Cruiser is on a 14-day tour
02:33Docking in destinations including the Bahamas, Jamaica and Columbia
02:38For many, getting to visit multiple locations is the highlight of cruising
02:44From Jamaica
02:46Wow
02:47To the Bahamas
02:48Let's go!
02:49Costa Rica
02:50To Grand Cayman
02:52Passengers get a taste of paradise at every stop
02:56Today, the ship is docked in the Colombian city of Cartagena
03:02And amongst the 1,300 passengers eager to explore
03:05Are Midlands couple Melanie and Neville
03:08Who've booked a day with a difference
03:10Another difference
03:11So these all must be going on other excursions
03:14Yeah
03:15It's our second cruise
03:17When we realised all the places we were going
03:19We thought, oh yeah
03:20This is what we wanted to come this time
03:23And this is our tenth year together
03:25So we got together
03:26Kind of an anniversary as well
03:28They may have been together a decade
03:31But things are about to heat up for these two
03:35We're up to the volcano
03:37For a mud bath
03:38I'm looking forward to
03:39But a bit apprehensive at the same time
03:42It's just the volcano bit
03:43Yeah
03:44It makes you a bit nervous
03:47Passengers pass through an identity system
03:49Every time they get off and on the ship
03:53It ensures everyone's returned before it sets sail again
03:56But first there's the small matter of identifying the correct tour bus
04:01Out of over 20 heading off on different excursions
04:06Look for the bus
04:08It's something with volcano
04:10Yeah, she did say all the way down the bottom
04:13How did she?
04:14What?
04:17Thank you
04:18They went to the mud volcano
04:26Located on the country's northern coast
04:29Cartagena is one of South America's oldest colonial cities
04:33And a gateway to this nation of 50 million people
04:38At more than four and a half times the size of the UK
04:41Columbia has Caribbean and Pacific coastlines
04:45And terrain that ranges from the Andes mountains
04:48To volcanoes and tropical forests
04:51But today the passengers will be experiencing something totally different
05:03El Totumo isn't a volcano in the ordinary sense
05:06And locals have spotted an opportunity for tourism
05:11Instead of molten hot lava
05:13However, this volcano bubbles with a muddy mixture of water, sediment and methane gases
05:19That's believed to be infused with mineral-rich properties
05:26I've got bikini on under here
05:28Shall we take our clothes off and leave them here?
05:30Erm, I believe so
05:32Yeah?
05:33Yeah, that's what they said
05:34It's all safe
05:35Yeah
05:36Cues of daring visitors line up to dunk themselves in the warm mud bath
05:43Tradition has it the volcano was a problem for local people
05:47So a priest poured holy water onto the lava
05:51Turning it into mud
05:52Said to have cleansing and rejuvenating effects
05:55Well, I feel alright
05:58Yeah, well, I feel alright
06:02I've only been a man on the ground
06:04I've been a man on the ground
06:05I've been a man on the ground
06:06You've got to dive in
06:07Head first
06:08Head first
06:09You have?
06:10Yes
06:11Yeah
06:13Last
06:16Across the ocean, over 5,000 miles away
06:22is another super vessel in the Holland America Flute.
06:26Voyaging across North Africa and Europe,
06:29this vast cruise ship is docking in destinations
06:32including Tenerife, Lanzarote, and the Netherlands.
06:37Today, the ship is on its way into Rotterdam,
06:40where passengers are excited to head off
06:43on excursions with a Dutch flavor.
06:45Thank you so much.
06:46My name is Licia, and I am the Assistant Shore Excursion Manager.
06:52During the two-week cruise, South African Licia Tonga
06:57will be helping to sell and manage
06:58nearly 100 different excursion options.
07:02My job is extremely busy.
07:06We're actually selling them an experience
07:08of what possibilities of excursions to do ashore.
07:13We sell them a dream, just joking.
07:17Perched on the edge of the city,
07:18Rotterdam Port is an easy stepping stone
07:21to fulfilling those dreams.
07:24But before people can disembark,
07:26British Security Officer Rich Fontaine
07:28has to coordinate a safe docking into the port.
07:32I was just about to call you.
07:34Yeah, closed deck one,
07:35and we use our gangway on our deck.
07:37When the captain's docking the ship,
07:40he obviously needs a bit of help
07:42where he's going to stop.
07:44So he has myself, who I'm concerned for the gangway,
07:47where the gangway needs to be.
07:49We're just opening up the doors here
07:51and the rival runner, Dan.
07:54We're going backwards.
07:56Did you notice?
07:57Well, astern, we should say.
07:59We're going astern at the moment
08:00and approaching the dock.
08:03Once we've opened up the side door,
08:06it can be a dangerous area to be.
08:08You have to keep your wits about you,
08:11concentrate.
08:12The guys will rope it off,
08:13and I will just make sure
08:14that nobody else comes along
08:17and suddenly sees the door open
08:19and wants to have a look outside
08:20and see what the weather's like.
08:23We're going to be taking this jetway
08:24into this break here.
08:26As we get alongside the dock,
08:29then we communicate with the bridge
08:31if the dock is clear for us to land the gangway.
08:34Everything, Richard, to position.
08:37Deck two is good, Captain.
08:38We shall accept the gangway.
08:41Going to be a busy day today.
08:43There are people going off on excursions.
08:47Rotterdam is home to the largest port in Europe
08:49and handles approximately 28,000 seafaring vessels a year.
08:56For many of the crew,
08:58the cultural cruises of Europe are a highlight.
09:01You good?
09:05Helping Lysia to coordinate the busy day of excursions
09:07is Diane Brunidor from the Philippines.
09:11Diane is my colleague.
09:13She is new, not new to ships,
09:15but she's new to the department.
09:17Lysia?
09:18Yes, Paul?
09:19Can you hold my bag for a moment?
09:20In order to understand the excursions they're selling,
09:23the shore excursion team joins the passengers
09:26whenever the opportunity arises.
09:30And today, the pair are mixing business with pleasure
09:33on an excursion 33 miles north of Rotterdam
09:36to the Korkenhof Botanical Garden.
09:40The country may be best known for canals, bikes, and windmills,
09:44but tulips are an icon too.
09:46Flower cultivation in the Netherlands
09:50is worth nearly £4 billion a year.
09:54It controls about 60% of the global market
09:57and is often described as the Silicon Valley
10:00of the flower industry.
10:02The tulip festival in Korkenhof
10:05is one of the best to visit in Holland.
10:08I say this because the tulips can only bloom
10:11in a certain time in the year.
10:13So unfortunately, last season
10:15when I was on this very same ship,
10:16I was unable to go.
10:18But this time, I had the opportunity
10:20to finally go there.
10:22Tulips!
10:23Woo!
10:28There's a sense of anticipation on the ship too.
10:31The crew are getting ready to throw passengers
10:34the biggest party they've ever had on board.
10:37We're heading up to the Lido
10:38because that's where the festivities are.
10:41Today, Hamish Davies, who hails from Jamaica,
10:45is responsible for coordinating everything it takes
10:49to throw a party for a thousand people.
10:53Hi, good morning.
10:54I'm the entertainment director
10:56and I'm responsible for all on-board entertainment
10:58activities and events.
11:00Anything that is fun and engaging
11:02from an entertainment standpoint,
11:04I'm responsible for putting that program together
11:07and presenting it to our guests
11:09to enhance their cruise experience.
11:13I brought my handy-dandy tape measure
11:15and the only reason for that
11:17because real estate here
11:19is a little bit hard to come by
11:21and this is going to be where the dance floor is.
11:24The cruise line has Dutch heritage
11:26and its first ship sailed from the Netherlands
11:29to New York City in 1872.
11:33Tonight's party marks King's Day,
11:35a public holiday in the Netherlands
11:37to commemorate the birthday of King Willem Alexander.
11:41And with orange being the national color,
11:44it's the theme of tonight's extra-special event.
11:47An orange party is the biggest party of the cruise.
11:50In the Netherlands, it's also hugely celebrated,
11:53so we wanted to do our take on that.
11:55Also, this orange party in particular
11:57is going to be massive
11:59because the King's birthday falls
12:01within the same time frame
12:02that we would have our orange party.
12:05Hence, we're going to make it bigger, better,
12:07and just more elaborate.
12:08It's going to be a festive event.
12:10To accommodate the bigger event,
12:13the part has been shifted from its usual location
12:15in the billboard lounge on the second deck
12:17to the more spacious Lido deck.
12:20So all the usual arrangements must be scaled up.
12:25Hey, Roman.
12:26Hey.
12:26How's it going?
12:27All good.
12:27Good.
12:28Are we going to meet the timeline for Soundcheck?
12:30Yeah, we're on time.
12:31Yeah, yeah, we're on time.
12:32All right.
12:33There's quite a bit of planning that is involved.
12:35I need to send out a running order
12:37of what it is that we intend on doing.
12:40Timelines, this is where we think
12:42the satellite bars should go.
12:45The lounge chairs, at what time they need to be removed
12:47so we can start the setup, where we're going to have the stage,
12:51what signage we're going to have.
12:52So everything has been put in place
12:54to build up to the big event.
12:57Appreciate you.
12:57All right, thank you.
12:58All right, I'll let you get back to it.
12:59All right.
13:00With over 700 Dutch passengers on board,
13:04it's important that Hamish and his team
13:06deliver a party that they'll be proud of.
13:08For our Dutch guests, they're looking forward
13:11to celebrating the same way in which they would at home.
13:14Now, remember I was saying about getting festive,
13:16if you look to your right.
13:19He's ready, man.
13:20That's awesome.
13:21So for us, we need to make sure
13:22that we not only deliver upon that,
13:25but exceed that expectation,
13:26not only for our Dutch guests,
13:28but also our other guests
13:29who have never experienced such an event.
13:31So this gives you a pretty good overview
13:33of what tonight's going to look like.
13:35Just imagine, lounge chairs are gone,
13:37all our lights are up,
13:39hundreds of people just here having a good time.
13:42It is indeed a very big deal.
13:46It's going to be awesome.
13:54On its voyage around North Africa and Europe,
13:58Holland America's super vessel
13:59is docked in the Dutch city of Rotterdam,
14:02where the thousand strong crew
14:04are working around the clock
14:05to give passengers the holiday of a lifetime.
14:10Cheers. Cheers.
14:13From entertainment to housekeeping,
14:16galley to maintenance,
14:17every crew member is an essential cog
14:19in a well-oiled machine.
14:22But while some roles are more obvious,
14:25others are rather niche.
14:26Ricardo oversees a small team,
14:45and together they run a seamless operation
14:48doing minor repairs for guests,
14:50but mainly ensuring the staff look smart.
14:54Each crew,
14:55they are entitled to two jackets.
14:58So in my 29 years in this cruise ship,
15:01I'm sure I made about thousands of jackets.
15:05We are responsible for the crew,
15:08and every uniform day and night
15:10that need to be altered.
15:12I enjoy sewing.
15:17I enjoy creating something,
15:20like mostly the jacket.
15:22This is my specialty now.
15:25Yeah.
15:29Next in line for a Ricardo special...
15:32Good afternoon, Ricardo. Hello.
15:34...is hotel executive assistant Jack Spanega,
15:36who joined the ship four months ago
15:39when it was sailing around the Caribbean.
15:42Can I come by in about 10 minutes?
15:45I remember the jacket that I mentioned.
15:47We visited places in Caribbean,
15:50and of course,
15:51it's not as much as different
15:52from where I came from in the Philippines.
15:53It's hot, perfect for me.
15:56But then we just crossed Europe,
15:58and it's getting really colder.
16:00I think I'm going to die.
16:03So that's why the jacket is essential for me.
16:07Yeah, perfect.
16:08I'll see you shortly.
16:09Thank you. Bye.
16:11While Jex gets kitted out for the cold,
16:15across the Atlantic,
16:16the new Statendom's sister ship,
16:18MS Rotterdam,
16:19is cruising the balmy climes of the Caribbean,
16:23where in Colombia,
16:25it's finally Neville and Melanie's turn
16:28to take the plunge into the volcanic mud bath.
16:32But whichever way you choose
16:34to slide into the sludge
16:35at just four and a half metres across,
16:38only about 15 people
16:39can fit in at a time.
16:41So it does get rather cosy.
16:44Hello.
16:45It's very slimy.
16:46Yeah?
16:46It's wonderful.
17:00It's very slimy,
17:02but it's lovely.
17:03It's soothing,
17:04lovely massage,
17:05free massage.
17:06That was brilliant.
17:08It's thick.
17:09It's got strong hands.
17:09It's amazing.
17:11Organised chaos.
17:13Melanie and Neville may now be on intimate terms
17:20with their fellow cruisers,
17:21but it seems the eruption of methane bubbles
17:24is still a bit awkward.
17:26Visitors can spend as much as 30 minutes
17:36marinating in the gloop
17:38before it's time to take stock.
17:41Getting into the mud
17:42was an absolutely fabulous experience.
17:45It felt like heaven.
17:46To me,
17:48it felt like being in melted milk chocolate.
17:52I have to wait and see when it's washed off.
17:53Yes,
17:54I feel absolutely amazing.
17:56It's lovely.
17:57And for a tip,
17:59local ladies will rinse you with water
18:01from Lake to Tulumo.
18:03I could have stayed in there all day.
18:05It's better than a jacuzzi,
18:07to be fair.
18:07What do you reckon?
18:08Just a bit overcrowded.
18:10Whilst Melanie and Neville
18:15may have created
18:16some memorable muddy moments,
18:18en route to a less intimate excursion,
18:22some passengers from the European cruise
18:24have chosen to visit
18:25the world-famous Tulip Festival
18:27at Kirchenhof.
18:30And today,
18:32shore excursion duo Lissia and Diane
18:34are joining the tour.
18:36I was scrolling through Instagram again
18:38and I saw a post that says,
18:40oh,
18:40eight things to do before you die,
18:42you know,
18:43visit the Kirchenhof Tulip Festival
18:45in the Netherlands.
18:46And I'm like,
18:47this is it.
18:48This is it.
18:49So,
18:50there's this particular spot
18:51behind,
18:53there's like a windmill.
18:54I think that's going to be our mission
18:55to hunt for that.
18:56I'm like,
18:56I want that exact same picture
18:58with the windmill in the background
19:00and the tulips on either side.
19:02Okay,
19:02we're ready to go?
19:04Let's go,
19:04let's go.
19:05Let's go.
19:06For Lissia,
19:07joining the trip
19:08is an important part of her job
19:10as she needs to have
19:11in-depth knowledge
19:12of the excursion she's selling.
19:14So,
19:15we just are doing
19:16a site inspection
19:17of this particular excursion
19:20just to see
19:20if the excursion runs
19:22as described.
19:23And then,
19:23we're just noting
19:24what time we arrived,
19:25how long it took us
19:26to get there.
19:27And then,
19:27afterwards,
19:28we just enjoy the excursion
19:30just like any other guests.
19:31So, yeah.
19:33Kirchenhof
19:34opened to the public
19:35in 1950
19:36after a group of growers
19:38and exporters
19:39decided to exhibit
19:40their spring flowering bulbs.
19:43In its first year,
19:44it attracted nearly
19:45a quarter of a million visitors.
19:48Now we're at the entrance.
19:49We're about to scan in
19:50our tickets for our group.
19:52With the passengers
19:53all safely through,
19:55Diane and Lissia
19:56are free to have a bit of fun.
19:58This is the windmill
19:59at the back,
20:00so the bucket list spot
20:02has to be here.
20:02So, we just have to go
20:03straight down there.
20:05Then we're going to
20:05find the windmill.
20:06Let's go!
20:07Let's go!
20:07Let's go!
20:09The garden offers

20:37the century-old
20:38pumping mill
20:38was donated
20:39to the gardens
20:40in 1957
20:41by none other

20:55This is perfect.
20:56Okay, you got it.
20:56I love it.
20:57I love it.
21:00Felicia,
21:00taking photos
21:01isn't just about
21:02her social media feed.
21:05I am normally
21:05on the ship
21:06for about six months
21:07at a time.
21:09Back home,
21:10I live with my husband
21:11and my beautiful
21:12baby boy,
21:14Bulagani.
21:15He is four years old.
21:16As a mom
21:17traveling away
21:18from my son,
21:19at the beginning
21:19was horrible.
21:21But then,
21:21I want my babies
21:22to know
21:23that I'm a working mom
21:24because my mom
21:25used to be
21:25a traveling mom
21:26as well.
21:27She used to tell us,
21:28you're going to sleep
21:29four times
21:29and then I'll see you.
21:31And that's the same thing
21:32that I do
21:32for my son right now.
21:36Going back home
21:37and telling the story,
21:38showing the pictures,
21:39my son would be like,
21:40Mommy,
21:40you've been there!
21:41Because I show him
21:42all the photos,
21:43I show him all the videos.
21:44It's amazing.
21:45It's a great way
21:45to open up the world
21:47to him
21:47and prep him
21:48for when we're
21:49about to travel
21:49with him, yeah?
21:51Time to go!
21:52Let's do it!
21:57Lissia's colleagues
21:58on the ship
21:58are gearing up
21:59for a special
22:00Dutch celebration,
22:01an orange-themed party
22:03to mark King's Day.
22:06Hi, good afternoon.
22:07How are you doing today?
22:09Are you guys
22:09having a good time?
22:13Ensuring the party guests
22:14have all the food
22:15and drink they want,
22:16falls to Tanberg D'Souza
22:18from India.
22:19I am the food
22:20and beverage director.
22:21I'm in charge
22:22for all the services
22:23provided by
22:24the front of the house,
22:25which is the restaurant.
22:26It's the beverage department
22:28as well as
22:28the culinary department.
22:30Morning, girls.
22:31How are you?
22:32Morning.
22:32I started as
22:34a snack steward
22:35in 2001
22:36on a smaller ship.
22:38After snack steward,
22:39I was an assistant waiter,
22:41senior waiter,
22:42head waiter,
22:43assistant methody,
22:44worked my way along,
22:45climbed the steps,
22:46and I just love it.
22:49Hey, Giovanni,
22:50how are you today?
22:51Good, good.
22:52So from food
22:53and beverage operations
22:54perspective,
22:56it's a huge operation
22:57and it's a huge day
22:58for all of us.
22:59We take it very seriously
23:01and we start it
23:01from the morning.
23:03So what are you making tonight?
23:04Doing the Dutch orange prince.
23:06Wow, that's interesting.
23:08Very nice.
23:08Am I going to get drunk
23:09with that?
23:10Maybe.
23:10For the orange party,
23:13we serve blood orange gin,
23:16which is mixed with
23:17almost all of our cocktails
23:18to make our colorful glasses.
23:20Orange is the color for Holland.
23:22Wow, that's good.
23:23Nice color.
23:24Beautiful.
23:25They're slightly less
23:30of a festive spirit
23:31at the tulip festival.
23:35Lysia and Diane
23:37are on duty again,
23:39rallying the troops
23:40to get passengers
23:41back to the ship
23:42on time.
23:43Number six.
23:45But the numbers
23:45aren't adding up.
23:47There's, um,
23:48we counted earlier,
23:49it was 36 guests,
23:51and now when the tour guide
23:52was counting the guests seated,
23:54it's only 35, including us.
23:56So we're missing one person.
23:57We're going to go back
23:58and try and see
23:59if we can locate them.
24:01Anybody for bus number six?
24:03Bus number six.
24:04If we do still
24:05have somebody missing,
24:07um, I say that
24:09we have to give them
24:1015 minutes,
24:11and that's why
24:12I actively look
24:14for the person.
24:15That's what I do
24:16when I'm on an excursion.
24:17If it's, uh,
24:18already 15 minutes
24:19after the agreed departure,
24:21we will leave
24:22whoever that was left behind.
24:24So we're going to go
24:25and check.
24:26Hopefully we'll find them.
24:27If not, bye-bye.
24:30Because the bus
24:31have a schedule,
24:31we have to respect that.
24:33No!
24:37We have to go!
24:48After its stop
24:49in Waterdam,
24:50Holland America's
24:51European voyage
24:52has set sail once again.
24:54And shore excursion duo
24:56Lissia and Diane
24:57need to chew over
24:59their findings
24:59from the tulip trip.
25:01So, it was a five-minute walk
25:03from the parking lot
25:04to the main entrance.
25:05But first,
25:06there's the matter
25:07of the missing person.
25:09We must also remember
25:10that we left
25:10one guest behind,
25:11so we have to put that
25:12in the reports as well.
25:13Do we have information
25:14on whether or what happened
25:16to him or her?
25:17So, the guest
25:18didn't come forward to us,
25:19but we did have a zero count,
25:21which means everybody
25:22made it on board
25:23on time count,
25:24which means everybody
25:25made it on board
25:26on time
25:27for the departure time.
25:28So, he or she made it back
25:29for the departure time.
25:31So, he or she made it back.
25:33Deep down,
25:33I was okay
25:34because we have multiple buses
25:36with multiple times.
25:38So, I was not as worried
25:40because there is a way
25:41that the guests
25:42can make it back
25:43on the ship.
25:43So, Leesha...
25:44Tell me.
25:45Since we were able
25:46to get your bucket list,
25:47you liked the photos?
25:48I did like the photos.
25:50Thank you so much.
25:51I liked this one
25:52in particular.
25:53Awesome.
25:55This one was the best.
25:56Yeah.
25:56I was able
25:58to get the money shot.
25:59The money shot.
26:00Good job.
26:06After a day
26:06of doing as much
26:07or as little as they please,
26:09the passengers
26:10still have time
26:11for chilling.
26:14But on the Lido deck,
26:16the crew are working
26:17against the clock
26:18to prepare
26:18for the orange-themed party,
26:21an extra-special celebration
26:22for the Dutch King's birthday.
26:25So, plan A, B, and C.
26:26Yes.
26:27Plan A,
26:28the DJ system.
26:31With over 700 Dutch passengers
26:33on board the vessel,
26:35it's important
26:36that the party provides
26:37a full flavor
26:38of their national festival.
26:40It's a very big deal
26:41for our Dutch guests,
26:42so we need to ensure
26:43the recipes are properly followed
26:45because we are serving
26:46lots of Dutch snacks.
26:47Actually, only Dutch snacks.
26:50Preparation of all
26:51the traditional treats
26:52falls under the watchful eye
26:54of executive chef
26:55Jundiel Marcelo.
26:57Guys, orange party tonight,
26:59executive chef is fully in charge
27:03for the whole ship.
27:04I'm handling about 200 cooks.
27:08Originally from the Philippines,
27:10Jundiel spent four years
27:11in culinary college,
27:13followed by nine years
27:14working as a baker.
27:16Dex, are we ready
27:17for the frying of the bossy ball?
27:19Yes, sir.
27:19Yes, sir.
27:20We have the new oil here already.
27:22Over the 15 years
27:23on the cruise line,
27:24he's worked his way up
27:25from commie
27:26to kitchen commander,
27:27and he's no stranger
27:29to Dutch delicacies.
27:30We are preparing
27:31six kinds of
27:33hot and cold snacks
27:34because it's a celebration
27:36of Dutch heritage,
27:37so we celebrate
27:38with the Dutch food.
27:39Bosch ball
27:40for the bitter ball
27:41and the cheese
27:42and chutney,
27:43sausage roll.
27:45For tonight's party,
27:46Jundiel and his team
27:47will prep and serve
27:48over 1,400 Dutch snacks.
27:52We have the sausage roll.
27:54It's one of the Dutch delicacies,
27:56and it is rolled up
27:58in the puff pastry.
27:58There will be
28:00400 Dutch sausage rolls
28:02being made,
28:03which are much the same
28:04as their British cousins,
28:06and 300 bossa bollen,
28:08which is essentially
28:09an overgrown
28:10chocolate-coated profiterole.
28:13During the evening's event,
28:14the lineup of traditional treats
28:16will be displayed
28:17in a grand parade on deck.
28:20The dough is nice, huh?
28:21Very good.
28:21It's good.
28:22We have enough raisins inside, so...
28:23Put more raisins.
28:25Put more raisins, huh?
28:26Oli bollen
28:27are similar to donuts,
28:28but usually incorporate
28:30raisins or currants,
28:32and they're traditionally eaten
28:33on New Year's Eve.
28:35Tonight, there'll be
28:36300 of them to tuck into.
28:38OK, more cinnamon and sugar, please.
28:41Whilst kitchen prep
28:43is in full swing,
28:45passengers are also
28:46gearing up for the event.
28:49Sandra, a British beauty therapist
28:51who's travelling solo,
28:53is getting into the party spirit.
28:54I'm really looking forward to the orange party.
28:57There is a couple of people I met on board,
29:00so we're gonna have a drink together
29:02and then hopefully dance the night away.
29:06I'm wearing a nice orange dress tonight.
29:08Hopefully gonna fit in with everybody on board.
29:11This is gonna be my first orange party,
29:13and I heard the best things about it,
29:15so I cannot wait for tonight.
29:18This is the sample, chef?
29:20Yes, chef.
29:21It's the sample.
29:22So he's going to prepare more.
29:23He just wants to make sure the sample is nice.
29:25Culinary side,
29:26they start their preparations from the afternoon.
29:28There's a lot of work involved in that,
29:30from the pastry chef
29:31all the way to the hot galley.
29:33This takes eight hours minimum of preparation.
29:36Very good fig chutney.
29:38It's made of very good port wine.
29:39It is marinated a day in advance.
29:41The cheese what we serve is one of the finest cheeses.
29:44I mean, we all love it, from crew to guest.
29:47And to ensure there's enough cheese to go around,
29:50a whopping 20 kilos has been ordered in.
29:53So how many are we going to prepare here?
29:55We'll prepare the same portion of everything,
29:57around 600 portions of each.
29:59So it means in one tray
30:00it's good enough for four to five guests.
30:02OK, good job. Keep it up.
30:05Tell you what, I'm just gonna put my camera back on.
30:07Also coordinating their outfits with the evening's theme,
30:10cruise regulars Pam and Barry from Lincoln.
30:13Right, let's get this necklace on for you.
30:15It's gonna be a bit of a hectic party later on,
30:17but we'll, gotta eat first,
30:19gotta fill ourselves full of food,
30:20and then do we,
30:22did you get around on my Lido bar later tonight?
30:24I'd like to say to her, do I look all right?
30:27Yes, you look wonderful darling,
30:28as you always do.
30:30I agree.
30:31Right, are we on our way?
30:32Yep, let's go.
30:32OK, let's go.
30:33Got the key.
30:34I have the key, always have the key.
30:36Right.
30:36So, I need minimum, minimum 600.
30:44OK.
30:45And make it sure everything with the filling, huh?
30:47Yes, sir.
30:47OK, thank you.
30:48Very good.
30:48Keep it up, sir.
30:49I'm very hands-on on preparing the food.
30:52I always teach them how to do it,
30:54to correct them properly.
30:56Make it sure everything will be checked in 30 minutes.
30:59Yes, sir.
30:59This is a big event for us.
31:01Yes, sir.
31:01We have Dutch guests, so,
31:02and let's have a party tonight.
31:04Yes, sir.
31:04Thank you very much.
31:06I will be back.
31:06Yes.
31:08As the European ship prepares to party,
31:11in the Caribbean,
31:15passengers Neville and Melanie
31:16are making the most of their final hours in Colombia,
31:19with one last visit before heading back to the ship.
31:25Colombia is listed as one of the most biodiverse countries
31:28in the world,
31:29owing to its range of habitats,
31:31from the lush Amazon rainforest
31:32to the rugged Andes Mountains.
31:34The country is so rich in flora and fauna
31:39that when the cruise terminal was developed,
31:42it took advantage of the local forest in the area
31:45to include a conservation centre,
31:48offering a unique and natural oasis on the dock's doorstep.
31:52Oh, it's like a tropical area, isn't it?
31:55Yeah, a botanical garden.
31:58What's up there?
31:59There's something up there, isn't there?
32:04Red one and a blue one.
32:06Amazing.
32:07Oh, wow.
32:08There's two parrots up there.
32:11So, coming off the coach,
32:13we've fallen into a tropical garden
32:16that's got loads of parrots.
32:18It really looks lovely.
32:19Yeah, it's lovely.
32:21Which is a bonus, actually.
32:23Peacock.
32:23Oh, there's a peacock down here.
32:26The park is home to more than 700 animals,
32:29including a number of birds
32:31that are sent here
32:32by environmental authorities
32:34for their recovery and protection.
32:37Chance of a lifetime, eh, Mel?
32:42Ooh.
32:42There we go.
32:44Shaking his feathers.
32:45The peacock.
32:49And Lee's performing there.
32:53Colombia holds the title
32:55of the most bird species in one country,
32:58with nearly 2,000 different birds
33:00within its borders,
33:02accounting for around 20%
33:03of the world's total recorded species.
33:08Oh, pink flamingos!
33:10Pink flamingos!
33:12Amazing.
33:13Got to get a shot of the flamingos now.
33:16It's the closest I've been
33:17up to a flamingo.
33:20Beautiful.
33:22That was amazing.
33:24Yeah, wasn't expecting that at all.
33:25It's mind-blowing.
33:26It's brilliant.
33:28It is a trip of a lifetime.
33:29What Colombia's got,
33:30I believe it's worth coming back again.
33:34I would like to come back
33:35and explore more, definitely.
33:37But with more adventures awaiting
33:39on board their Caribbean cruise,
33:41it's time to head back
33:43to the ship.
33:43The plan for the rest of the day
33:45is a shower, lunch,
33:47and definitely a drink by the pool.
33:58On its 14-day voyage,
34:00passengers on board
34:01the Europe and North Africa cruise
34:03will be travelling
34:04over 4,000 nautical miles
34:06in the North Atlantic.
34:07And for jacks from the Philippines,
34:10it can feel a bit chilly.
34:14Officer will ask me,
34:15why are you wearing your sweater?
34:17Well, everybody's wearing
34:18their normal uniform
34:19because I get cold easily.
34:21And now that I'm here in Europe,
34:23good luck to me.
34:25So that's why
34:26I really need to have a jacket.
34:28He's visiting the ship's tailor,
34:30Ricardo, for help.
34:32Hey, Ricardo, good afternoon.
34:33How are you?
34:34Oh, hi.
34:35If you remember,
34:35I mentioned to you
34:36I need a jacket
34:37because definitely
34:38it's Europe season.
34:40Is there available jacket
34:41that I can collect now?
34:42We have only two sizes left.
34:44Is it okay if I can try it on?
34:46Yeah, try it on.
34:47First, you're gonna try this one,
34:48double XL.
34:49Double XL?
34:50Yeah.
34:50Okay, let's see.
34:51Try it on.
34:54Is it quite big?
34:55Too long.
34:56Too long?
34:57Yeah.
34:57Okay.
34:57I think we need
34:58some alteration of the tone.
35:00All I have to do is
35:02do the tightening over here.
35:05All right.
35:05Under here.
35:06And also shorten the sleeves.
35:08I definitely look forward
35:10to get my jacket.
35:11And I think I will feel
35:13really comfy and snuggly.
35:16Whatever you think is the best.
35:19You're the master.
35:20Up on deck,
35:29the atmosphere may be
35:30ramping up for tonight's
35:31big party.
35:33But below deck,
35:34the end of the working day
35:35allows Lysia some precious
35:37downtime to check in
35:38with her family
35:39back home in Johannesburg.
35:41My contract is six months
35:44at sea at a time.
35:45And ever since I became
35:46a mother,
35:47for some odd reason,
35:48I tend to
35:49shy away from people.
35:51So it gets really lonely.
35:52You just want to be
35:53in your cabin,
35:54do your job,
35:55and you can't wait
35:55to get home.
35:56So, yes.
35:59Hi.
36:01How are you, my baby?
36:03I'm fine.
36:04I miss you so much.
36:06I miss you so much.
36:08My baby is four.
36:10His name is Buklagani,
36:11but you can call him Bubu.
36:12It's okay.
36:13He's a miracle baby.
36:15So he was born
36:17without a left hand.
36:19Are you being a good boy
36:21with daddy?
36:23Yes.
36:23Let me see your pajamas.
36:26That is so cool.
36:27Mommy, look at the creepy animal.
36:30It's a creepy animal?
36:32No, that's Batman.
36:33It's not a creepy animal.
36:35Earlier on in my pregnancy,
36:36I had a big tear on my womb.
36:38And normally when that happens,
36:40you get a miscarriage.
36:41But my womb to repair itself
36:43and my baby survived
36:45the pregnancy.
36:46Yeah, so I'm just happy
36:48that he's here
36:49with or without the hand.
36:51So he's definitely
36:52my miracle baby.
36:53I'm very lucky to have him.
36:54Very blessed to have
36:55my baby boy.
36:56Yeah.
36:58Thank you, Mommy.
37:00You're welcome, my baby.
37:04Aw, thank you, my baby.
37:08Bye.
37:09Bye.
37:09Bye.
37:09Bye.
37:09Bye.
37:09Bye.
37:09Bye.
37:09Bye.
37:09Bye.
37:12I just miss him a lot, you know,
37:14and I like to hug him
37:15and smell him.
37:17Every day I'm going to call him.
37:18So far, I think it's...
37:20Yesterday was 100.
37:21I think we were 99
37:22until I go home.
37:25So, yeah.
37:25I'm going to go back to the office.
37:27We just closed the desk.
37:29So maybe up until 9 p.m.
37:32That's my goal.
37:33Then I go to bed.
37:34With Lysia winding down,
37:34things are ramping up for entertainment director Hamish.
37:46With just a few hours to go until the orange party,
37:54he needs to check if his intensive party plan is paying off.
37:58So, how many do we have again?
38:01Ten.
38:02Ten.
38:02The day of orange party, it's game day.
38:05You know, there's no room for error.
38:08Everything's got to be carefully calculated.
38:10So, everything was good for the sunset?
38:12Yes, happy.
38:13Yeah, yeah.
38:13Okay.
38:14Yeah, the bandit day set.
38:15This is the fastest sunset we ever had.
38:18Oh, that's good.
38:19This is the biggest party of the cruise.
38:21And while you don't want to think about it that way,
38:24you kind of do, right?
38:31Equally focused on perfection
38:33is the ship's 200-strong culinary team.
38:36Everything is good?
38:37Determined to live up to the precise expectations of his boss
38:41is sous-chef Santosh Narayanan.
38:44How's the bread going?
38:45Everything is fine.
38:46You have enough bread, yes?
38:48For service, don't forget that.
38:49Anthony, how is our cheese plate?
38:52It's fine now for a moment?
38:53Everything is good?
38:56Also keeping an eye on detail with their party dress code
39:00are Ash, Nigel and Nihar from Romford.
39:03Like my orange top?
39:05It's very orange.
39:07Very tangoed.
39:08Very tango party.
39:10It's going to be lovely.
39:12Oh, I've got this.
39:13Made this in crochet.
39:15Oh, the crochet one.
39:16With the passengers' expectations mounting,
39:21the pressure is on for the crew and Hamish.
39:24I see housekeeping is here, moving the tables now.
39:27So we're good.
39:28All right.
39:28Thanks.
39:29Bye.
39:29How many times my phone rings?
39:32How are we doing, brother?
39:33You all right?
39:34I would say a number of times.
39:36Let's, yeah.
39:37Hey, John, it's Hamish.
39:38How are you doing?
39:39Yeah, let's just say a number of times.
39:40Okay, all right, cool.
39:44Bye-bye.
39:44If there's anything that could go wrong,
39:46I'd worry about other than everything.
39:50Just takes one thing to make it go wrong.
39:54So you want to make sure that everything goes according to plan.
39:57As the day draws to a close
40:09and the ship continues the European leg of its voyage,
40:12there's a distinct Dutch flavor in the air.
40:16And it seems even the skies have decided to join
40:19in the orange theme of tonight's big event.
40:21Passengers Pam and Barry are kicking off their evening
40:30with a cocktail.
40:32Tuscan lemon droplets.
40:34Yeah, sure.
40:35You just need the magic card.
40:42That's your driving license.
40:44Oh.
40:46Try that one.
40:48That's a good one.
40:49That's a good one.
40:51While passengers and the hospitality crew
40:57are gearing up for the night ahead,
40:59below deck,
41:00many of the crew's day staff
41:02are getting ready to clock off,
41:04including Taylor Ricciardo.
41:08I need this one to trim down like this.
41:14I learned this from my mom.
41:17When I was a kid,
41:18I saw her doing some dresses.
41:20Then at the age of 17,
41:22I decided to do it.
41:28This needs to identify what department
41:30she or he is.
41:36Ricciardo!
41:36Oi!
41:37I'm here for my jacket.
41:39Is it ready?
41:40Yes, it's ready.
41:40You want to try?
41:41Please, please, please.
41:42I really need this.
41:45Wow.
41:46This is so much better.
41:49It fits perfectly.
41:50How do I look?
41:52Good.
41:52Good?
41:53Yeah.
41:53Ricciardo is amazing.
41:54Who would have thought that there is a place on board
41:57where they can do something from scratch
42:01or, like, alter our uniforms?
42:04Perfectly amazing.
42:05Perfect.
42:06Ricciardo, thank you so much.
42:08You're the best.
42:09See you next time.
42:10Okay.
42:12As you can see,
42:13I have my jacket on.
42:15Ricciardo definitely did a great job doing this,
42:18and I'm very happy.
42:19It's comfy.
42:21I feel warm.
42:21It feels so good.
42:24Lovely.
42:33Let's go.
42:36The evening's orange party is a highlight for many,
42:40including over 700 Dutch passengers on board.
42:45I'm looking forward to celebrating the Dutch King's birthday.
42:49Okay, almost ready.
42:51Are you ready, guys?
42:52Our partners, Peter and Danny, from Rotterdam
42:55with their nephews, Liam and Sven.

43:02Usually, I have this.
43:05Okay, that doesn't look much better than this.
43:08It is, huh?
43:09Let's go.
43:10Let's go.
43:11Okay, here we go.
43:12Let's go to the orange party.
43:18Hello.
43:19Hello.
43:22On the Lido deck, Hamish's organizational efforts
43:29are already starting to pay off.
43:33It's more fun for us
43:35when we see how much fun the guests are having, right?
43:37It is a lot of work putting it together,
43:39but once you see it come to fruition,
43:41then it's just, yeah,
43:43it's well worth it.
43:44In the galley, there are 400 sausage rolls,
43:58300 bossa bollen,
44:0020 kilos of cheese,
44:01and many more Dutch treats
44:04ready to serve to the partygoers.
44:06The atmosphere in the kitchen is hot, to be honest.
44:10But the staff also need to look the part.
44:13The restaurant team,
44:15they are wearing orange neckties.
44:17For me, I have my own.
44:21Orange wig.
