With thousands of students entering university through clearing, we ask people in Birmingham whether they think university is still the best route for young people—or if careers in trades like plumbing and electrical work offer a better future.

00:00University I feel sometimes is a way out of work for a lot of people.

00:05I have a grandson myself that has just finished school and he wants a proper job.

00:12He wants an apprenticeship, which are really hard to find.

00:16I know a few of the younger generation get stressed out going to the university and college.

00:22They prefer to go to bricklaying, plumbing, anything like that.

00:27Any trade like that is a lot easier for them to make it warmer.

00:29I have no clue with that.

00:32Because school did nothing for me.

00:35I think it's hard to know if one is better than the other.

00:38I think you've got to realise that university is quite good for meeting people

00:43and becoming more of a people person.

00:45You get a lot of skills from that.

00:47I don't use my degree at all, but I really did learn how to manage people that don't agree with me,

00:56more difficult people.

00:57Uni helped me with that.
