UnitedHealth Discloses DOJ Probe Into Medicare Practices, Faces Criminal and Civil Investigations

UnitedHealth Group disclosed Thursday it is under criminal and civil investigation by the Department of Justice, according to ABC News. The company stated that it had reached out “proactively” to the DOJ following media reports about a federal investigation into its Medicare practices. UnitedHealth is now complying with formal requests and stated it has “full confidence” in its practices. The DOJ has not commented. This comes amid growing scrutiny, following reports by The Wall Street Journal on potential Medicare fraud, antitrust violations, and billing practices. UnitedHealth’s CEO stepped down in May after a turbulent year, including the 2024 fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO. UnitedHealth was the Dow’s worst performer in early 2025, with shares falling 1.5% after the investigation was announced.
