During a speech to the House floor on Wednesday, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) spoke about her Fix Our Flooded Basements Act.
Transcript
00:00Without objection, the gentlewoman is recognized for one minute.
00:03Mr. Speaker, disastrous floods, horrific floods are devastating the lives of our residents
00:08in southeast Michigan and across the nation.
00:11And the dangers don't stop when the flooding ends.
00:14Too many of our families are denied FEMA assistance because current rules and policies don't
00:20cover repairs and reconstruction for most basements, where floods are the most destructive.
00:26Without federal assistance, Mr. Speaker, they are forced to live in extremely unsafe conditions,
00:31being exposed to serious health risks like mold and mildew and moisture damage.
00:36One of my residents, a 90-year-old, had no hot water and a broken furnace and toxic mold
00:41in her basement.
00:42There are people recovering from disasters, many of them on a fixed income, seniors who
00:47cannot afford the thousands of dollars in repairs of their basement.
00:51That's why I'm proud to introduce Fix Our Flooded Basements Act.
00:55To make sure that federal disaster assistance finally covers those costs.
00:59We must make this change so that our residents, our constituents, live in a safe, again, home
01:06after a flood.
01:08They need to be able to rebuild their lives from these disastrous floods.
01:11Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
