00:00A rainy Thursday evening to everyone. Shorms Espina here for PTV News Now.
00:06Now let's get straight to the stories, making headlines and stirring national conversation.
00:10From state of calamity declarations across affected areas to government aid.
00:15Learning won't take a backseat at any time and DepEd says that all systems go, even with Mother Nature going rogue.
00:22As proof, the agency has rolled out flexible options to keep education on track.
00:27Amidst widespread class suspensions due to Typhoon Emong, Tropical Storm Dante and the Habagat,
00:33the DepEd says its flexible learning modes from online classes to printed modules are firmly in place.
00:39With schools urged to implement learning, the department has thus far distributed tablets in disaster hit areas
00:45and trained teachers to work with LGUs to timely declare class suspensions when needed.
00:51Next month, mobile learning units and upgraded AI-powered hazard tools will be deployed in danger zones.
00:58So far, over 24,600 schools have pressed pause on face-to-face classes,
01:04with 270 doubling as evacuation centers as DepEd steps up efforts amidst extended extreme weather.
01:11The autocratic and religious extremist group of the Taliban is swooping down and is going hard on returning Afghans
01:20set back in large-scale deportation operations by Iran, Pakistan and other EU nations.
01:26These massive and forced repatriation campaigns have left hundreds of thousands,
01:30if not millions of Afghans who fled their homeland before the Taliban took over the nation's affairs in the summer of 2021.
01:37Facing the full wrath of the Taliban and its payback, that include acts of torture, arbitrary jail time and forced hard labor.
01:46Even worse, the estimated 3 million Afghans making their way back have to bear with a worsening humanitarian crisis,
01:53along with the Taliban's campaign of retribution.
01:56Media workers, individuals identified with the former government,
01:59and especially women and young girls are up for prolonged persecution,
02:02the United Nations Refugee Agency, or UNHCR, said.
02:07Hence, the United Nations has sounded the alarm and urged all countries with Afghan refugees
02:11to halt our deportations immediately,
02:14while the Taliban retook the reins of power when it successfully entered Kabul on the summer of 2021
02:19without the slightest resistance.
02:21At this moment, let's lend our eyes and ears to my colleague in PTV's Pine City Studios
02:28for what's hot and happening in the Cordilleras.
