AccuWeather's Tony Laubach reported live on July 23 as storms returned to the region.
Transcript
00:00But an uptick in storms could present some flooding issues later today.
00:03AccuWeather meteorologist Tony Laubach joins us from near Windsor, Colorado to discuss today's setup.
00:08And Tony, I think this is a little bit more in your wheelhouse than maybe talking about the heat yesterday.
00:15Yeah, I certainly appreciate this.
00:18And actually, it's funny you mentioned that because I'm standing on the south end of some storms that are just off to my north.
00:23And the outflow has knocked the temperatures down to the low 80s.
00:27The AccuWeather real field temperature right now where I'm standing 79 degrees.
00:31So it feels absolutely wonderful outside.
00:33But you see over my shoulder here some of the darkened clouds left over from one of the storms that fired about an hour or so ago just to the north of the Windsor area.
00:41I want to show you radar because there are two areas we're watching here kind of along the front range between here and then north up to Cheyenne.
00:48We're kind of seeing the storm just to my immediate north, just north of Windsor here to the east of Fort Collins, starting to die out.
00:54We're seeing some still moderate rain, though, from Fort Collins up to none.
00:58But you get further north across the border into Wyoming, there's a line of storms sliding to the southeast.
01:03That's going to work its way into the Cheyenne area here over the next hour.
01:07Differences between the two storms, though.
01:10The one to my north not moving a whole lot while you get north into Wyoming.
01:13We see that line of storms that's actually sweeping south at about 30 miles per hour.
01:17Not severe yet, that's the good news, but certainly wouldn't be surprised to see some gusty winds over 50 with that.
01:22But this setup is kind of a messy type setup.
01:25We see this a lot later into the midsummer, late summer.
01:29Typically, as we get toward the last few weeks of July into August, we really see things peak out here in terms of the storm coverage and what we see along the front range.
01:39When we're in the peak of the storm season in June here in Colorado, a lot of times we're worried about severe weather.
01:44Hail.
01:45We're kind of in a hail alley here.
01:47But as we get later into the summer, we lose two key ingredients here.
01:51We lose the cooler temperatures in the upper atmosphere, and we lose a lot of the mid-level winds, which kind of create that shear you need for storms.
02:00When you combine those two, what happens, the warmer atmosphere up top stays warm, so that makes ice production a little harder to do.
02:08And without the upper-level winds pushing those storms along, a lot of times those storms will fire, and then they will sit over multiple areas leading to scenes like you're seeing now here.
02:17We've had multiple episodes of this, some significant flash flooding events along the front range.
02:22This is at lower elevations.
02:23That's not even counting what we see up in the foothills sometimes, especially in some of the burn areas where we see a lot of that heavy rain really kind of take hold.
02:32And then that really becomes an issue for a lot of areas up in the higher elevations.
02:35Today is one of those setups down here in Colorado where we're going to see storms.
02:39Popcorn variety storms may briefly attain severe levels, but it's that heavy rain threat that we're going to be concerned about today, and then maybe once again tomorrow.
02:48We do see a little bit more activity in terms of the upper-level winds that might bring a little bit more severe weather threat here to Colorado today.
02:56As you guys were mentioning, up in Nebraska, just to the northeast here about several hours, seeing some significant severe weather up there, including tornado warnings.
03:03Likely we won't see that here in Colorado today, but we'll be keeping an eye on that flash flood potential here throughout the rest of the evening.
03:10Yeah, well said there, Tony.
03:11We'll be watching out for those storms working the way in the southeastern parts of Wyoming.
03:14Pretty good line there that will possibly produce some pretty strong winds.
