00:00
Oh yeah!
00:01
No no no no no no!
00:03
I'm actually feeling pretty excited.
00:04
Thank you for the black, thank you for the boots.
00:07
It's really good.
00:08
You look amazing.
00:09
The only thing is I might be a floating head,
00:10
but I do have bleach blonde hair.
00:12
You show up.
00:13
You pop.
00:13
If I wore it, then I fade into the black.
00:17
Listen, I think we're making history tonight,
00:19
because I think this is the latest press junk I've ever done
00:22
in terms of time.
00:23
Yeah, I think so.
00:25
I think we're accommodating because we're doing like
00:27
international and states at the same time.
00:29
So thank you for being here.
00:31
Thank you for being here.
00:32
I mean, I'm moaning about how tired I am.
00:34
How are you feeling?
00:36
You've had a long day.
00:37
I'm feeling good though.
00:38
Like I'm actually feeling pretty excited.
00:40
Like it's fun to get to talk about it.
00:42
And yeah, I think there's the kind of assumption that like,
00:45
oh, it's, it's, you know, you're here for a long day.
00:48
But I'm having a good time.
00:50
That's my guy.
00:50
I'm having a good time.
00:51
That's Washington Black right there.
00:53
Come on, man.
00:54
Okay.
00:54
I'm so tempted to do this to you and say,
00:57
I was in Australia.
01:00
Oh, yeah.
01:00
Oh, yeah.
01:02
From, no, I just did an interview.
01:05
Oh, yeah.
01:06
I did an interview actors on actors with Natasha Rothwell.
01:09
I saw, yeah, yeah.
01:10
Where I was talking about like how many films have left the
01:13
States and are shooting in other places in the world.
01:16
And I was in Australia and there was like seven films in
01:19
my hotel at the same time.
01:21
Is it?
01:22
And I tapped her boot like that.
01:25
I saw that.
01:25
Girl, you dumb dumb.
01:27
Yes.
01:28
I saw that.
01:28
I saw that.
01:29
I was like, yeah.
01:29
That's technically wrong.
01:30
Any thing I think of Australia now, I just think of that.
01:33
It's my favorite thing on the internet right now, honestly.
01:37
And you guys shot this in Canada, is that right?
01:39
We shot in Canada, we shot in Mexico and we shot in Iceland.
01:42
So we went to three different locations across the world.
01:45
Yeah.
01:46
I mean, as actors, is that like a massive perk of the job,
01:49
getting to go to all these places and travel?
01:51
Yeah.
01:52
You got to go to all of them.
01:53
I had never been to Canada.
01:54
I'd never been to Iceland.
01:55
I'd never been to Mexico.
01:56
So it was like, yeah, you get to see all these amazing places
01:59
and go to these amazing things.
02:00
And you'll, I mean, it's your job.
02:02
Do you know what I mean?
02:03
Like it's your job to go to these places.
02:04
You have to do this now.
02:05
I have to go to Mexico.
02:06
Man, look.
02:07
Ah, Iceland, the Northern Lights every day.
02:09
It's so hard for me.
02:11
But no, it was great.
02:12
But then you were also in the 1700s, is that right?
02:15
1800s.
02:16
1800s, 1800s in this.
02:17
So was everything kind of stripped back to be in that period?
02:21
Yeah.
02:22
I mean, costume wise.
02:23
Yeah.
02:23
They definitely made the world period, periody-esque and 1800s-esque.
02:28
Definitely costume, makeup and the hair as well for some other characters.
02:33
They built a whole world for us that was very much 1800s.
02:36
Absolutely.
02:37
Yeah.
02:38
And what was it for you both that made you want to get involved in this?
02:40
Because I wasn't aware of the novel before this,
02:42
but now obviously I want to go and read the book.
02:44
You know what's interesting?
02:45
I want to hear how you answer this question.
02:47
Because early in my career, I was like, why do I want to be involved with it?
02:50
Because I auditioned and I booked it.
02:52
Like, that would be my answer.
02:54
Is that pretty?
02:55
Yeah.
02:56
Okay.
02:57
No, no, no, no.
02:58
Because I got the part.
02:59
No, no, no, no.
03:00
It's a large part.
03:01
But I do think, I guess, why I stayed.
03:03
There you go.
03:04
Why I was, like, really joyous to do it was because it was a story that was so epic.
03:08
Like, the journey and the adventure was so massive and the character had gone and went
03:14
through, like, so much to get to where he was.
03:16
You know?
03:17
There's love in there.
03:18
There's faith.
03:19
There's perseverance.
03:20
There's, like, this whimsical element, fantastical element.
03:23
It's just, like, a story that's larger than life.
03:25
So, of course, when I saw the audition, I was like, do you know how it was?
03:28
I was like, I'm not going to get that.
03:30
I'm not going to get that.
03:31
You know?
03:32
And then it happened.
03:33
And then I just had the best time of my life.
03:34
So.
03:35
You were great.
03:36
And I met this guy.
03:37
He's great.
03:38
Yeah.
03:39
He's great.
03:40
I mean, similar, I echo everything that Ernest just said.
03:41
And just with intentionality, like, these stories of whimsy, of fantasy, et cetera,
03:46
don't typically feature a young black boy born into captivity, right?
03:52
They tend to be a bit more downtrodden in terms of how they're told.
03:55
And I wasn't interested in telling a story about black pain or black trauma.
03:59
I was interested in telling a story about black joy and seeing what kind of reverberations
04:05
that type of imagery has in the world.
04:07
So we'll find out soon.
04:09
Oh, I just got goosebumps there.
04:10
Honestly.
04:11
Yeah.
04:12
And your character is kind of mentored by Sterling's character in this.
04:16
Is that, is art imitating life in real life?
04:19
Is he a mentor?
04:20
Yeah.
04:21
Imitating life, life imitating art, all that kind of stuff.
04:24
I was saying, like, I feel like it's one of those things where it naturally just happened.
04:29
Obviously, this was all a very new experience for me.
04:32
And, you know, Sterling was wearing two hats and he was an actor and producer.
04:36
And so every time he was on set, he kind of set the tone of this, like, positive, vibrant,
04:43
and, like, lovely, like, set space filled with, like, just, just, just positivity, man.
04:48
That's the best way I can put it.
04:50
Um, just the questions I'd ask him about life, about set life, and, and, of course, acting in general.
04:55
It was a gift.
04:56
So definitely, you know, Medwin is a mentor to Wash, but it's, it's the same off camera as well.
05:01
I would say art imitating life as well, or life imitating art.
05:05
Yeah, yeah.
05:06
Like, I think I learned as much from Ernest as, as, as, as, it's a circular.
05:10
For sure.
05:11
Relationship because, uh, he's such a pure young man, um, who has, like, the best of intentions
05:19
with every interaction that he has with another human being.
05:22
Uh, and just sort of reminded me, when I see him, I'm reminded of what goodness looks like.
05:28
Um, and it's always a joy to be in the presence of.
05:31
Wow.
05:32
You know, this has really uplifted me.
05:35
I'm sorry.
05:36
Thank you so much for looking after a very, very tired Jodie.
05:39
We should have done this in the pub.
05:42
Next time.
05:43
Next time.
05:44
But honestly, you've given me so much energy and I cannot wait to binge the rest of this.
05:48
Thank you so much.
05:49
Thank you so much.
05:50
It was so good to meet you.
05:54
Thank you so much, guys.
05:55
You're so welcome.
05:56
Thank you so much for your time.
