01:10Where I was talking about like how many films have left the

01:13States and are shooting in other places in the world.

01:16And I was in Australia and there was like seven films in

01:19my hotel at the same time.

01:22And I tapped her boot like that.

01:25I saw that.

01:25Girl, you dumb dumb.

01:29I was like, yeah.

01:29That's technically wrong.

01:30Any thing I think of Australia now, I just think of that.

01:33It's my favorite thing on the internet right now, honestly.

01:37And you guys shot this in Canada, is that right?

01:39We shot in Canada, we shot in Mexico and we shot in Iceland.

01:42So we went to three different locations across the world.

01:45Yeah.

01:46I mean, as actors, is that like a massive perk of the job,

01:49getting to go to all these places and travel?

01:51Yeah.

01:52You got to go to all of them.

01:53I had never been to Canada.

01:54I'd never been to Iceland.

01:55I'd never been to Mexico.

01:56So it was like, yeah, you get to see all these amazing places

01:59and go to these amazing things.

02:00And you'll, I mean, it's your job.

02:02Do you know what I mean?

02:03Like it's your job to go to these places.

02:04You have to do this now.

02:05I have to go to Mexico.

02:06Man, look.

02:07Ah, Iceland, the Northern Lights every day.

02:09It's so hard for me.

02:11But no, it was great.

02:12But then you were also in the 1700s, is that right?

02:151800s.

02:161800s, 1800s in this.

02:17So was everything kind of stripped back to be in that period?

02:21Yeah.

02:22I mean, costume wise.

02:23Yeah.

02:23They definitely made the world period, periody-esque and 1800s-esque.

02:28Definitely costume, makeup and the hair as well for some other characters.

02:33They built a whole world for us that was very much 1800s.

02:36Absolutely.

02:37Yeah.

02:38And what was it for you both that made you want to get involved in this?

02:40Because I wasn't aware of the novel before this,

02:42but now obviously I want to go and read the book.

02:44You know what's interesting?

02:45I want to hear how you answer this question.

02:47Because early in my career, I was like, why do I want to be involved with it?

02:50Because I auditioned and I booked it.

02:52Like, that would be my answer.

02:54Is that pretty?

02:55Yeah.

02:56Okay.

02:57No, no, no, no.

02:58Because I got the part.

02:59No, no, no, no.

03:00It's a large part.

03:01But I do think, I guess, why I stayed.

03:03There you go.

03:04Why I was, like, really joyous to do it was because it was a story that was so epic.

03:08Like, the journey and the adventure was so massive and the character had gone and went

03:14through, like, so much to get to where he was.

03:16You know?

03:17There's love in there.

03:18There's faith.

03:19There's perseverance.

03:20There's, like, this whimsical element, fantastical element.

03:23It's just, like, a story that's larger than life.

03:25So, of course, when I saw the audition, I was like, do you know how it was?

03:28I was like, I'm not going to get that.

03:30I'm not going to get that.

03:31You know?

03:32And then it happened.

03:33And then I just had the best time of my life.

03:34So.

03:35You were great.

03:36And I met this guy.

03:37He's great.

03:38Yeah.

03:39He's great.

03:40I mean, similar, I echo everything that Ernest just said.

03:41And just with intentionality, like, these stories of whimsy, of fantasy, et cetera,

03:46don't typically feature a young black boy born into captivity, right?

03:52They tend to be a bit more downtrodden in terms of how they're told.

03:55And I wasn't interested in telling a story about black pain or black trauma.

03:59I was interested in telling a story about black joy and seeing what kind of reverberations

04:05that type of imagery has in the world.

04:07So we'll find out soon.

04:09Oh, I just got goosebumps there.

04:10Honestly.

04:11Yeah.

04:12And your character is kind of mentored by Sterling's character in this.

04:16Is that, is art imitating life in real life?

04:19Is he a mentor?

04:20Yeah.

04:21Imitating life, life imitating art, all that kind of stuff.

04:24I was saying, like, I feel like it's one of those things where it naturally just happened.

04:29Obviously, this was all a very new experience for me.

04:32And, you know, Sterling was wearing two hats and he was an actor and producer.

04:36And so every time he was on set, he kind of set the tone of this, like, positive, vibrant,

04:43and, like, lovely, like, set space filled with, like, just, just, just positivity, man.

04:48That's the best way I can put it.

04:50Um, just the questions I'd ask him about life, about set life, and, and, of course, acting in general.

04:55It was a gift.

04:56So definitely, you know, Medwin is a mentor to Wash, but it's, it's the same off camera as well.

05:01I would say art imitating life as well, or life imitating art.

05:05Yeah, yeah.

05:06Like, I think I learned as much from Ernest as, as, as, as, it's a circular.

05:10For sure.

05:11Relationship because, uh, he's such a pure young man, um, who has, like, the best of intentions

05:19with every interaction that he has with another human being.

05:22Uh, and just sort of reminded me, when I see him, I'm reminded of what goodness looks like.

05:28Um, and it's always a joy to be in the presence of.

05:31Wow.

05:32You know, this has really uplifted me.

05:35I'm sorry.
