00:20In the video, he jokes that he's decided to heed the advice of some online critics to go back to Africa.
00:26But he says he wants to apologize to haters because he'll be back in New York at the end of July.
00:32The 33-year-old state assemblyman has been under attack from opponents and even members of his own party since he beat former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo to the Democratic nomination.
00:44His opponents in November include Cuomo and incumbent mayor Eric Adams.
00:49Mamdani was born in Kampala to Indian parents and moved to New York when he was seven.
00:54He was naturalized as an American citizen in 2018.
