01:23This week, you will be building great ball contraptions.

01:32Your challenge will be to build a machine that transports a ball from point A to point B,
01:42where it will roll into a tube and travel into the next team's build.

01:49With the ultimate goal being to get this ball from one side of the studio to the other.
01:56This ball right here is your ticket to the finale.
02:00This challenge is going to require you to have multiple mechanized parts of your model in sync,
02:07capturing a ping pong ball.
02:09If you've ever played ping pong, that thing will fly anywhere.
02:13Those things have a mind of their own.
02:14This is going to be extremely difficult.
02:16Of course, in this challenge, we need you to get a ball from one side to the other.
02:21But how you do that is a chance to really get creative.
02:25We want to see wonderful stories that create a true spectacle.

04:00Do we want to keep it all soup themed, like, in front of the kitchen?

04:04We are making the lost meatball, who has tumbled into the kitchen sink, where his buddy,
04:09the Pan, sweeps him up onto a grapevine into the pantry, where the cans help the little
04:16meatball get back home.
04:17That could be in the pantry with the different types of soup cans going up and down.

04:24In this challenge, we're going to take some risks with these cans.
04:26This is a very complicated mechanism, but we've successfully used power functions in
04:30the Star Wars challenge and incorporated motion into our Over the Falls build as well.
04:34So, building a grape ball contraption sounds pretty easy.
04:37A trip to the finale is on the line.

06:20Being on Lego Masters feels like a fairy tale.
06:23So we are making the tale of Sage and Ian.
06:26This build will show off the journey that we've experienced in this competition.
06:30The ball will bounce from book to book and enter the vicious Technic Serpent that Sage
06:36and Ian have to cross to get to the Beanstalk and get to the finale.
06:41Every book is going to be a different fairy tale, but the last one will be our fairy tale ending.

06:50Who would be the happiest in your family were you to win?
06:54Our oldest son, we explained to him what $100,000 was.
06:58He's like, how many 20s is that?
07:00That's a decent question.

07:02Tell me about what this build is going to be.
07:04This is inspired by a children's book.
07:06We're going to tell the story of if you give a lion a hairbrush, what's going to happen.
07:10I'm really missing our kids right now, and especially reading to them every night.
07:14So we're building a great ball contraption based on stories that we love to read our children,
07:18where one event leads to a seemingly random next event until we get to the end.
07:23So what happens when you give a lion a hairbrush?
07:26Well, he's going to get self-conscious, put on earmuffs and want to go skiing and have hot chocolate,
07:30which reminds him of Costa Rica, so he's going to fly to Costa Rica and he'll be playing soccer.
07:34Wow.
07:35It's ambitious.
07:36Our last couple builds have not been the biggest in the room, and it's time for us to be the biggest in the room.

07:53Remember kids, when engineering, the rule of kiss is important.

07:59If I can get this lift mechanism going, I think this will look pretty impressive.
08:04We decided to tell the story of escape from mom.
08:07Our story takes place in an amusement park.
08:09Little Johnny gets separated from his mom, and he is now going to seize the opportunity to ride all the rides that he has never been allowed to ride.
08:15Johnny's going to be represented by the ping pong ball.
08:17He's going to go up into an anti-grav tower.
08:19He's going to take a ride down the woe coaster onto the flume of doom.
08:24This will be pretty exciting if this actually works.
08:26I'm going to hop on building the anti-gravity fun house that's going to move the ball in a snake-like pattern all the way up.
08:35Okay, this is rather time consuming.
08:38If this contraption doesn't work right, this is going to be a huge waste of time.

08:50We need to bring more ambition and more complexity to the table.
08:54If you get this to work, I'm going to be super impressed.
08:57So I have this idea to make this giant snowy sledding hill with a roller coaster going around and around it.
09:06And the ball keeps getting stuck.
09:12This could be a really big deal because if this stops the ball, it stops it for the entire line of movement.
09:18And so I'm trying all sorts of different things to try to get more clearance added to my roller coaster.

09:28I'm getting pretty stressed because if the one thing that fails is our roller coaster that's not even a power function, that looks really bad.

10:04This challenge is the only thing that stands between them and competing in the finale.

10:16What are you going to be looking for in some of these builds?
10:18We're asking our teams to do great ball contraptions where we have to take a ball and bring it all the way through a model doing crazy movements all the way to the end and move on to another model.
10:28Right now, we need this to work 100% of the time and it's only working about half of the time.
10:33This might be our most technical challenge we've ever had on LEGO Masters.
10:40It's a really tough one.
10:41It's not just the technical side.
10:43It's also having to work with a non-LEGO object.
10:45Yes.
10:46Something like this ping pong ball, it actually bounces.
10:48It can bounce all over their model, but it's not a LEGO dimension.
10:52It can also get stuck inside their model.
10:55So they really have to think about this wild card going into their build.
10:58Is it going to stop at that peak?

11:01But we also want our teams to have some fun in telling a story that makes us excited and actually rooting for this ball to get from one side to the other.
11:09So we got to make sure that we get the character in there.
11:13And what's going to be so fun is at the end of the challenge, we're going to start a ball and watch it go through all four of the builds to the very end.
11:20It is going to be quite the spectacle.
11:22This is a great challenge for the semifinals because it has a nice mix of some technical challenges and an opportunity to show off their storytelling ability.

12:13It's all going to revolve around a little lost meatball.
12:17So we'll kind of roll across the counter off of the plate of spaghetti over there, past the kitchen sink, roll up the counter.
12:22As it gets to the pantry, where cans are bouncing, that will kind of lift it up and over.
12:26As it sits there, it will then lift up to the next one where it lowers on and then finally getting to the last where he will be on his merry little way.

12:37But right now you're testing things in isolation where it's a very controlled space where the ball's exactly where you want it.
12:42I think just as a reminder, look for that thing that can throw the whole thing off.
12:46Because you just need that one little bump to be out of place.

13:23We have never done a conveyor belt before, so this is definitely a challenge for us.

14:18The biggest problem we're having right now is balancing the ping pong ball on the horizontal
14:24conveyor belt because it's very lightweight and it could easily fall off.

22:27having some issues yeah what's catching i don't know if your build does not work that's a problem
22:34there's a really good chance yeah yeah that you'll be out and not make it to the finals
22:39devastating can't stop the ball in the middle of the model you're almost into the finale this is
22:44their last chance to get in they really got to scramble to make these functions work i'm swapping
22:49the big gear the gear is too loose if that's what sends us home then that's on me i'm going to tighten

23:37finale van and michael have just taken huge pieces off their build i don't think i've ever seen them

24:26close to the finale builders you just spent 12 hours designing unbelievably impressive great ball
24:34contraptions now before we see if we can get this ball from one side of the studio to the other
24:39the brick masters are going to take a look at each of your builds they'll be judging them on
24:44aesthetics and ultimately whether or not they can get the job done anthony and joe you're up first
24:51tell us about your great ball contraption this is escape from mom johnny and his mom are out for a
24:58summer vacation and amusement park and john decides to go on a little adventure on his own the ball is
25:03going to go up the anti-gravity funhouse it's going to go down the whoa coaster and then it's going to go up
25:09through the flume of doom brick masters what do you think it's really impressive i mean the fact
25:15that you have that roller coaster right in the middle it is inviting us into your story and i
25:19get the theming right up front and then you're trying such different movement i love the spinning
25:24and that you tried the different colors to bring attention to it and it seems like a clever way to
25:28ensure that your ball is going to make it into what i would say is your hero item that lifting fun
25:33house it's really fresh i could have had a little bit more theming for the theme park for example make
25:39that fun house actually feel like a fun house but overall really great build lots of ambition and lots
25:46of exciting functions sage and ian you're up next tell us about your great ball contraption this is the
25:55tale of sage and ian being on lego masters feels like a fairy tale so we wanted to capture that in this
26:03build so the first book you can see our minifigures are high-fiving the second book represents sage
26:10getting invited to the masquerade ball and she felt like cinderella the third book represents the fierce
26:17technic serpent that sage and i are very afraid of but when we make it through we reach the beanstalk
26:26which takes us to the finale all right thank you that's all i really wanted i just wanted a live
26:32high five we know uh brick masters what do you think we really wanted some fantastic storytelling
26:38in this challenge and what a brilliant story you have told i love that you've made it personal but
26:44you've also put that whimsical fun fairy tale layer on it and then of course you have this beanstalk
26:50something so magical but you've built these tiny little houses up on the top that seem almost
26:56impossibly far away so it's so fun to imagine the ball traveling up there considering how nervous you
27:02are going into this i actually i'm really happy with the movement that you have incorporated you're
27:05really relying on the speed of that ball and some gravity it's a pretty effective way to getting to
27:10what i think is the most impressive part of your model which is that dragon keeping it exposed it makes
27:15it a magical dragon where i would have loved you to push yourself is on the creativity of the path
27:20that your ball is going to take it is right now going in quite a linear journey and it would have
27:24been really fun if it had a couple of twists and turns along the way because our function is so
27:30simple compared to the others it has to work we are literally betting our entire season on that ball
27:38getting into that serpent's mouth brick masters do you think it's going to work it's just as long as
27:43the ball doesn't do something unpredictable if it bounces if it ricochets in the wrong way before
27:48it hits the dragon i think that's where the risk really lies yeah there's a lot of risk and we
27:52don't know what the odds are so you're just hoping that it works in that in that moment right
27:56yeah we're really hoping that it works it could go any way if it bounces if it turns

28:21called the lost meatball and our story begins with a meatball who has fallen from the spaghetti plate
28:28into the sink or his pal the pan and the sponge are going to scrub him back up it'll carry up the
28:34grapevine at the end it comes off with his final friend mr cupboard rocking the cans on top to push
28:40along the happy meeple so it can get up back on its way you should be really proud this if it pulls
28:46off and actually works is really compelling you managed to take something that could be a simplest
28:51circular movement and you've really elevated it to something that has a magical quality with that little
28:55escape hatch that you're dropping down into your next moment and now building to the top and you
28:59put your most magical movement yet all these cans coming together trying to help this meatball get
29:04out that's something very exciting yeah ben and michael i love just how much fun you've had in creating
29:10your story here you're totally transported us into this other world it's just really playful i also love
29:17the fact that you've made characters you've made the ball something that we really really going to
29:21care about and we are going to be willing it to get to the end of your build but that's where i'm a
29:27little bit worried because i would love the story of the meatball to end in a success and right now
29:34those cans are a little bit of a worry fingers crossed i would love to see it work because it does
29:38just give that high five icing on the cake if it works but if it doesn't want to let down to have
29:43it just at the end but we'll hope for the best what are the odds of this whole thing working the last
29:49portion has kind of a 50 50 chance all right guys great job it looks awesome we're pulling for you
29:56congrats thank you guys okay corey and rebecca you're up we showed up today they wanted ambition and we
30:06brought it corey and rebecca tell us about your great ball contraption our build is called hairbrush
30:14inspiration lenny our lion is brushing his hair and he notices how big his ears are so he's a little
30:21self-conscious and puts on some earmuffs which gets him in the mood for some sledding so he sleds down
30:26a sledding hill and definitely needs a cup of cocoa once he drinks that cup of cocoa he's inspired to
30:32travel to costa rica because that's where they harvest cocoa beans and once he's there he finds himself
30:38playing soccer with the locals and scoring a goal wow brick masters what do you think corey and rebecca
30:44throughout this competition we've been pushing you to be more ambitious with your belts and you've
30:50certainly delivered that today not only have you gone ambitious in the scale but you've also gone
30:55ambitious with your functions you've got like five points of unique movement you've got that hill you've
31:01got the roller coaster a dumpling bucket and that crazy finger lift and like a kick to get you out it's
31:07wonderful wild and imaginative and it shows you weren't afraid to take a risk where i would push
31:12you is i feel like you didn't quite have the time to get those storytelling details as polished as you
31:18wanted to we've got some that are 3d some that are 2d it would have been nice to have a really united
31:23language across will it work if i'm being honest this roller coaster track the spacing we kept that spacing
31:31really tight and occasionally get stopped all right well fingers crossed thank you thank you great job you
31:37two really thank you i really think we did enough to get into the finals and i'm just really hoping
31:44that this ball actually makes it through all right now that the brick masters have finished judging your
31:53builds let's take this baby for a ride all right if everything goes according to plan
32:02this ball will travel from anthony and joe's build to sage and ian's then over to ben and michael's
32:10ending up at cory and rebecca's with the ultimate goal being to get this ball from one side of the studio
32:19to the other got it you guys ready our fate is in the hands of will in that ping pong ball if it
32:27bounces anywhere yeah we're gonna be bouncing out and away we go
32:35come on go go go go go all right it's in there yeah it's in there traveling up the fun house now
32:59going up it's going up suspense building as it's going up this roller coaster come on come on come on
33:07up and out come on johnny here it comes traveling down the track let's go let's go
33:15okay get up there oh here we go making its way up oh my god going smoothly very slow
33:24joe's got three hands going come on johnny come on is it going to make it over the edge will it make
33:29over the edge and it is anthony and joe's worked perfectly and we're scared to death we can't be
33:39the first scene to mess up here we go right into sage and ian oh and it got through the dragon's mouth
33:48i am so happy it actually goes through the dragon's mouth it actually worked but it still
33:54has to make it up the beanstalk and will it click on oh and it is going up oh my gosh it's a lot of
34:03vibrations a lot of vibrations it's shaking oh hold on it caught itself it caught itself it
34:11caught itself it fell but it caught it which is amazing i can't believe it perfectly fell back to how
34:17it started and it didn't bounce i am jumping up and down like i just won the super bowl
34:24but it still has to make it up the track you can do it a lot of vibration vibrating here we go it's
34:31just a little double in it made it through the other way to the meatball moment of truth meatball
34:39covered in cheese there we go made it through the plate okay spinning around all right
34:47it hooked it on the hill here we go going up oh yeah oh yeah we got this to the cans fingers
34:56crossed the cans work we're going up so controlled why are you not but the steps aren't going up and
35:02down the steps are not going up and down and we're done it's what we fear they're jammed and the cans
35:11aren't working this is incredibly frustrating see if we can give it a little notch why are you not
35:16wanting to bind in there here we go let's try stepping step second step say a little help get
35:23this people going in though last step at this point i'm feeling pretty disheartened they wanted us to
35:31build a great ball contraption and we built an okay ball contraption and now we just hope the story and
35:37aesthetics get us to the finale go into corey and rebecca's oh okay oh no oh my god it's going all
35:45the way up not a bug it's a feature now it's just got to land in the oh it made it up
35:52don't stop don't stop no you dare stop don't stop oh it just got stuck there i'm super bummed
36:04that it stops it just sucks it's not moving needs a little nudge from corey here we go all right
36:09there we are will it make it will it make it will it make it stay one more second
36:16it stops again my heart drops because that might be the one thing that sends us home
36:21a little nudge here we go we got to wait for that flip of the bucket and it's making its way up
36:30that is very cool the way it's going up it's very smooth
36:40you did it that's awesome exciting finish they told us to go big we went big we had to nudge a
36:47little bit but at least none of our mechanisms failed everything that was motorized worked
36:52hopefully that's enough actually worked we're one step away from the finale we are this close close
37:00to reaching our goal which is insane this has been one of the hardest things the brick masters have ever
37:08had to judge so with a trip to the lego masters finale on the line brick masters please give me
37:16the name of the first team who's moving on to compete in the lego masters season five finale
37:22you gave us some truly impressive builds today but the first team making it through to the finale is

37:42what anthony this is very emotional for you moving on to the finale what does it mean to you it's
37:48everything i mean we sacrifice a lot of time with our family to be here and putting what we preach
37:54into practice like yeah persevering taking the task and meeting head on just getting to the stage it's

39:48our ups and downs but we've always got each other's back pushed through to the finale corey and rebecca

40:02i'm so incredibly proud of my wife for being with me through this and i feel like we left everything out
40:09on the table and i realized that no matter what happened at the judging part i was really proud of
40:14what we did and we could go home happy we're always asking you guys to be ambitious and to push yourself
40:21and that's exactly what you did today it just makes me so proud thank you for being part of this with us
40:27thank you thank you i'm really happy that we're able to spend this time together and make it this far
40:34and meet all these wonderful people sadly your lego masters journey ends here please turn in your

40:51turn all that off and focus on one task building lego you guys are great see you guys actually brought
40:59out some creativity that i never knew was there and to share that with corey and for us to do that
41:05journey together it's been incredible and here we are our final three teams one of you will be lego
41:20masters one of you will win one hundred thousand dollars this is what you've all worked so hard for
41:28now go on and hit the bricks it is absolutely crazy that there is only three teams left we're one of
41:36those three this is what we signed up for and to be this close we have to take it next time
