Karnataka town draws global attention

Archaeologists have discovered 4,000-year-old artefacts during an excavation near Mallikarjuna Hill and the Anjaneya Swamy Temple in Maski in Karnataka's Raichur district.

00:00In Karnataka's Raichu district, the town of Muskie is back in the spotlight after researchers

00:04uncovered signs of a civilization that lived here 4,000 years ago. Near the Anjaneya Swami

00:10temple and Mallika Arjun Hill, archaeologists found artifacts like clay pots, tools, utensils

00:15and artistic pieces all pointing to a well-organized settled community. The excavation has been going

00:21on for three months. It's led by Professor Andrew Bohr from Stanford University and scholars from

00:26Shiv Nadar University along with a 20-member team from India, the US and Canada. According

00:31to Professor Kadambi, the artifacts date back to between 11th and 14th centuries BCE. That

00:36places Muskie in the pre-Iron Age period, offering solid evidence of continuous human presence

00:41here thousands of years ago. Muskie isn't new to the world of archaeology. In 1950, this

00:47is where an Ashokan inscription was found. The first to connect the title, Devanampiya

00:51Piadasi to Emperor Ashoka. Now, this fresh discovery has taken Muskie even further back

00:56in time, deepening its place in South India's ancient history. But Karnataka isn't alone.

01:01In Tamil Nadu, excavations at Kirzadi have unored an advanced INA settlement dating back to the

01:076th century BCE, complete with urban planning, industries and early Tamil Brahmin script. Together,

01:13Muskie and Kiradi are helping rewrite the story of ancient South India, showing us how different

01:18regions evolved independently yet richly. Before this excavation, 271 potential sites

01:24had been identified in and around Muskie. The latest pines near the temple confirmed that

01:29people didn't just pass through, they built lives here. And the digging isn't over. As

01:34researchers go deeper, more layers of our shared past could still be waiting to be discovered.
