00:00The White House confirmed Thursday that President Donald Trump has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency,
00:07a common vascular condition often seen in older adults.
00:11The announcement followed concerns raised after Trump was seen with mild swelling in his lower legs and bruising on his hand.
00:20This is consistent with minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin,
00:26which is taken as part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen.
00:32Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when valves inside the veins responsible for helping blood flow back into the heart begin to fail.
00:40Chronic venous insufficiency is a really common condition, particularly as we age.
00:46And what happens is you have valves in your veins that help to return blood to your heart.
00:50And over time, for a variety of reasons, those veils may fail, which can cause blood to pool in the legs.
00:57And a consequence of that can be leg swelling.
01:00It can be varicose veins.
01:02And in some more severe cases, patients can even get skin changes and alterations.
01:07While the condition can cause swelling and discomfort, experts say it is largely manageable.
01:14Now, treatment for this tends to be compression stockings most commonly.
01:18In some cases, there are minimally invasive treatments that can be done to close off the vein,
01:25particularly if it's a superficial vein.
01:27We also advise patients to walk and increase the strength of their calf muscle so that that can help return blood to the heart
01:34where the valves are not functioning so well, and also to periodically elevate the legs.
01:40But overall, a very common diagnosis and a very benign one as well.
