00:00Maurice and I, neither one of us fought for about six months. We had to heal up.
00:04We do have a good fight coming up for you here. There's a look at the challenger.
00:08Kunemasu Nagai, fighting in Tokyo. He is from Tokyo, 5'8", 141 pounds.
00:13He is fighting the world champion, Benny the Jet, Erkidez, 5'6", 145.
00:18Let's talk about Nagai, and again, back in Japan, and how the folks in Japan really latch on to their local fighters.
00:25Well, look at this. You've got 15,000 live fans in the arena.
00:29Kunemasu Nagai is a former world champion, and here he is, ready to take on the current champion, Benny the Jet, Erkidez, coming from the United States.
00:37The guy has the Japanese honor at stake.
00:40We must regain the world championship. The pressure is on him. There's the champion, Benny the Jet.
00:45He is from Tarzana, California, has made the trek to Japan before.
00:50He knows what this is all about, but as you mentioned, Nagai, a former world champion, he's been in big fights before,
00:56and I would not think, or I would think that the atmosphere and all the tension and pressure surrounding the championship fight would not bother someone who's been down that path.
01:04The guy is a true warrior. He's faced every kind of adversity you can think of in the ring, from knockdowns to cuts, and he's always been able to get up and do well with himself.
01:13And he's only suffered one defeat in his entire career. He's had over 35 championship fights, and here is the world champion, probably the legend of kickboxing, Benny the Jet, Erkidez.
01:25Benny's the first American ever to go to Japan and defeat the Japanese in their own backyard with their own rules.
01:32They hear the music, the eye of the tiger. He is certainly a tiger in the ring. You know a lot about his fighting style.
01:39Benny's 5 foot 6, 145 pounds, very powerfully built, one of the strongest welterweights in the world.
01:47He is equally adept at kicking and punching skills. His defense is incredible. The guy seldom gets hit. He understands the Japanese style of fighting.
01:56He can fight well with the leg kicks. He can defend it well. He has hands like Sugar Ray Leonard. He's got kicks like Bruce Lee, and I'm glad he's my friend.
02:06You know, you bring up the fact that he's hard to hit. That in itself is an art in kickboxing. Not so much the offense, because that is the more spectacular side of the sport that we see, but it is also something to make your opponent miss.
02:21The martial artist, his game plan is to hit and not get hit.
02:26Unlike boxing, where many times you see guys that are just out there slugging it out, we don't ever want to find out who's got the hardest head.
02:34They might take a punch to get a punch, or they'll trade back and forth a little bit.
02:38That's right. In kickboxing, you have twice as many weapons when you add the kick, so it adds a lot more strategy.
02:43And the faster and more intelligent fighter many times wins out over the stronger, slugger-type fighter.
02:50Now, both of these gentlemen are technicians, though, and it should be a thinking man's fight.
02:54Because of that, would you see less of a physical fight than we saw previously in the very first round, both fighters coming right out, getting after it right away.
03:04There was no feeling out process, no warming trend there at all. They didn't want to get to know each other, they wanted to see somebody go down.
03:11In a fight like this, would that change, though, because they are clinicians of sorts?
03:16As we hear him introduce Vinny Dejet Yukidis to the audience here in Japan.
03:21Vinny is a notorious slow starter because he is such a thinking fighter.
03:26He will take, normally, the first couple of rounds just to find out the strengths and the weaknesses of his opponent.
03:32The guy, I would think, is feeling the pressure of trying to regain his championship.
03:36He's in front of the crowd as he's being introduced now, and I think he will be the aggressor early in the fight.
03:41I think you'll see some contact early.
03:45There you had a look at Kuramasu Nagai again, the former world champion, taking on the guy who right now owns the crown.
03:52It's a ten-round scheduled fight for the World Welterweight Championship.
03:57Both fighters being called to the center ring, I guess, for final instructions.
04:01Not that Vinny'd understand anything he's being told.
04:04I don't think he speaks very much Japanese.
04:07Just nod your head politely, bow, get back to the ring and wait for the opening bell, which we just heard.
04:13Oh, and there you see, already, the jet extends the glove and obligatory, good luck to you, and the guy said, no thanks.
04:20I think I understood that in any language.
04:22In any language, that's right.
04:24Already, the stark contrast between this fight and the first, the fighters are right now measuring each other.
04:30And Dale, this is probably just as important as someone who decides to slug it out and go to it.
04:35I see Vinny has come out in the first round out of the southpaw stance, more of a defensive posture.
04:42He's looking to see what Nagai has and what his game plan is.
04:46And he's throwing a few fakes, and he just took a left hand to the face, so now he knows Nagai's got a left hand.
04:52You say he came out in the southpaw stance, and he'll switch back and forth everything, left to right, right to left.
04:57Why is that?
04:58Well, kickboxers, when they throw a back leg kick, they land in the opposite stance.
05:02So, as you kick, many times you change your stance, so you must be adept at fighting both left leg back and right leg back,
05:09where most professional boxers fight in one style only.
05:14There's the first clinch of the fight.Again, both fighters are starting off slow.
05:18Now that's, that's uh,Binny's trademark is to start slow and then heat up as the fight goes on.
05:23He just caught Nagai with a left hand on the temple.
05:26I think things are going to warm up here, and Nagai's trying to get loose.
05:29He looks a little bit tight,John.
05:31Now a lot on the line for him.
05:33You brought up in your opening remarks about the Japanese honor.
05:36So much to be said for the lifestyle and the way they approach not only their sport, but just their standard of living,
05:41and the way they approach life in general.
05:43There's so much to be said for that pride.
05:45And then certainly at stake here is,ooh,Nagai takes another left from Vinny the Jet.
05:50Binny's showing,I think at this point, that he's the superior boxer.
05:56Nagai's strength is in the low kicks, and he's really not using them at this point.
06:02And I think it has to do with, with,uh,Binny coming out in the southpaw stance.
06:07Is that unexpected?
06:09It might have caught Nagai off,uh,by surprise.
06:12You may have expected Vinny to come out with,uh,in the orthodox stance, more of a boxing stance.
06:19And Vinny's,uh,come out,I guess trying to take the leg kick or the low kick strength away from his Japanese challenger.
06:27The first round ends, and perhaps a slight edge to Arquirez, but I didn't see anybody gaining any substantial advantage in those,uh,initial exchanges.
06:37Arquirez chooses to sit down in his corner, and a guy elects to stand up.I think I want to take some rest.
06:43This is a scheduled ten round fight, and they may be in there for a while.
06:46Well,neither one of those fighters expended a whole lot of energy that first round.
06:50I would think the guy being the challenger,he's gonna have to turn the heat up here in round two.
06:55Is it a matter of,you really do have to,I guess,without doubt,beet the champion?
07:02You can't just expect a close decision to go your way,but he is fighting in Tokyo.
07:06Does that help in that regard?
07:08This fight goes the distance and,uh,is close.I would think that,uh,it's gonna be a toss up as to who gets it.
07:15Um,the judges are fair, but the crowd will be pulling for their hometown hero, and that can influence the judge.
07:21You know, when you see a kick land and you hear the roar of the crowd,it makes an impression on you.
07:25Binny, though,is the champion, and you do gotta beat him to take away his title,so,I don't know.
07:31WhenBinny gets going, the action's gonna pick up,and we may not have to worry about no judges.
07:37Here's the front kick, followed by the jab byYukides,to back his opponent up on the ropes.
07:46The guy just,he seems very comfortable in there, not being the aggressor.
07:52We are in the second round in Tokyo,Japan.Binny the Jadurkides, the world champion on the left of your screen, but a muscle in the guy,the challenger,
08:06with his back to you.One minute remaining in the second round.
08:13Again,Binny forcing his opponent on the ropes, and the guy,you know, doesn't seem too concerned about,uh,fighting against the ropes.
08:19But I'll tell you, whenBinny turns up the heat, the guy stays against the ropes,he will not survive.
08:25Now he's trying to open up a little bit, fight more in the middle of the ring, and use his kicks.
08:32Then he pressed him to the corner again, and if he stays there,John,he's gonna get hurt.
08:36It is so quiet in the auditorium, that you would know this fight was in Nagai's hometown.
08:45And perhaps, the jet has taken away that edge that Nagai would have, and that he has kept him at arm's distance, and has successfully so far taken the wind out of the sails of the emotionalism of the crowd.
08:57Well,Nagai just landed a right into the body, and to be honest with you, that's the first, and the combination that follows.
09:02First thing the Japanese fans have had to yell about. That's why they're so quiet.
09:05And he tagged him with another right in the closing second tier of the second round.
09:09I think Nagai might have stole that round with the flurry there at the end,so the way I look at it,you got one round apiece.
09:17But that's the kind of pressureNagai's gonna have to continue to put on,if he has any chance to win this fight.
09:23Now there was a boxer by the name of Muhammad Ali,I think that used to employ that tactic.
09:27Late in the round he'd put on a flurry, impressed the judges.
09:30Do you see that in kickboxing as well when you get under a minute?
09:33Do the fighters tend maybe to pick up the pace a little bit and hope to sneak one away?
09:37Any smart fighter's gonna try to make a lasting impression in the last 10 or 15 seconds of the judges.
09:44But Benny was the last 10 times over the last 10 times.
09:55You got a lot of the fighters.
09:57Long way to go,you see the seconds working in the corner.
09:59That's Benny the Jeter Kirez,Tarzana California,his hometown.5,6,145 pounds.
10:06And he's fighting against Kuromaso and the guys.
10:08Benny had a look on his face there between rounds like,a hey when's the fight gonna start?
11:03but now that the Americans are learning how to deal with the Japanese and the Europeans
11:07it's becoming of more interest because it is an exciting sport
11:11one minute remaining in the third round
11:13this is for the World Welterweight Championship
11:16ooh, a good right that time by Nagai, he snuck one in
11:23Nagai fighting off the ropes, much better this round, he landed a good uppercut
11:28Benny's really putting the pressure on him now
11:31he's starting to really load up and throw hard punches for the first time in the fight
11:35and that's the first glimpse we've had of his quickness and speed
11:37and his ability to put combinations together, Dale
11:39I think Benny's really warming up and getting into the fight now
11:44he's having fun out there
11:46there's nobody who loves to fight more than Benny the Jet Yikides
11:50it looks as though Nagai has dropped his guard a little bit
11:55his hands have lowered somewhat
11:56when he got close to Akides, the hands dropped and that provided a pretty good target
12:02there's Benny putting the combinations together
12:07there wasn't a lot of kicking in that round
12:11the guy still has yet to concentrate on his trademark, which is the low kicks
12:18I think Benny's defense, he's blocked a few of those kicks, when you block the low kick
12:24it hurts the kicker and not the kicky
12:26now why is that, you mean just from a plain old pain standpoint?
12:29that's right, you're talking about shin to shin contact and the guy delivering the kick
12:33when the other man blocks it with the shin, the guy that kicked gets the bigger bump on his shin
12:38and there's something to be said too, from the mental side of that
12:41when you think you're taking what should be your advantage to your opponent
12:44and he turns it back so easily, you have to wonder, I think, what is going to happen to me now?
12:49that's right, that is kind of reducing the guy, at least in that last round
12:53to only using his hand skills predominantly
12:57and he landed a few punches, but I think Benny definitely outscored him about three punches to one in that round
13:03and Benny did deliver a couple of strong body kicks, so I got Yurkides ahead two rounds to one
13:08you saw that flurry on the instant replay between rounds
13:21and if Yurkides can put together some combinations like that
13:24and the guy, oh, goes down for the first time of the fight
13:27it is ruled a knockdown, he'll get the standing eight count here
13:31boy, it didn't take long, about ten seconds into the fourth round and the guy took a seat
13:35the short left hand, oh, another one
13:38and the guy walked right into a left
13:42Benny the Jet Yurkides out of his arsenal of attack
13:48and he says, that's it, clear out the cobwebs, folks, this fight's over
13:51Benny the Jet Yurkides retains his world welterweight championship
13:57and the guy is still down, he didn't want to sit down between rounds, now he gets
14:02a chance to take a break in between fights, Dale
14:05well, Benny the Jet Yurkides concerned over his opponent, he, we didn't get to talk a lot about him
14:10it only went four rounds, but he is a Christian and I salute him for that
14:14and the guy, uh, a little disappointed because of the loss in front of the hometown crowd
14:19here's Benny, once again, the world welterweight champion
14:25so, the Jet Yurkides with a fourth round knockout of Kuramasu Nagai, Dale Cook and I'll be back with more world championship kickboxing right after this
