00:00Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Saleh has been appointed as Malaysia's new Chief Justice,

00:07taking over the post from Tunggung Maimun Tuan Mat, who retired earlier this month.

00:12In a statement, the Office of the Chief Registrar said the Yang Dipirtuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim,

00:18on the advice of Prime Minister Anway Ibrahim, and after consultation with the Conference of Rulers,

00:24consented to Wan Ahmad Farid's appointment.

00:27Meanwhile, Abu Bakr Jais has been appointed as President of the Court of Appeal,

00:31while Aziza Nawawi has been appointed as Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak.

00:37Wan Ahmad Farid's appointment follows the retirement of Tunggung Maimun,

00:41whose term ended on July 1, after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 66.

00:47Wan Ahmad Farid was previously a senator and served as Deputy Home Minister

00:51under the administration of the late former Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

00:56However, he quit politics in 2013.
