00:00Duck, the great western engine, worked hard in the yard at the big station.
00:25Sometimes he pulled coaches, sometimes he pushed freight cars, but whatever the work, Duck got the job done without fuss.
00:36One day Duck was resting in the shed when Sir Topham had arrived.
00:42Your work in the yard has been good. Would you like to have a branch line for your own?
00:48Yes, please sir, replied Duck.
00:51So Duck took charge of his new branch line. The responsibility delighted him.
01:00The line runs along the coast by sandy beaches till it meets a port where big ships come in.
01:08Duck enjoyed exploring every curve and corner of the line.
01:14Sea breezes swirled his smoke high into the air and his green paint glistened in the sunlight.
01:20This is just like being on holiday, he puffed.
01:23Well, you know what they say, laughed his driver. A change is as good as a rest.
01:29Soon, Duck was busier than ever.
01:38Sir Topham Hatt was building a new station at the port.
01:44Duck pulled the heavy freight cars wherever they were needed.
01:50Bertie looked after Duck's passengers and the other engines helped too, but the work took a long time.
01:57Noise and dust filled the air.
02:03Don't worry, whistled Toby. The station's nearly finished.
02:09And on time too, said Duck thankfully.
02:16Duck felt his responsibility deeply and talked endlessly about it.
02:21You don't understand, Donald, how much Sir Topham Hatt relies on me.
02:26Ach, aye, muttered Donald sleepily.
02:29I'm Great Western, and I-
02:31Quack, quack, quack.
02:32What?
02:33Ye heard? Quack, quack ye go.
02:36Sounds like ye'd an egg laid.
02:38Now whoesh, and let an engine sleep.
02:41Quack yourself, said Duck indignantly.
02:45Later he spoke to his driver.
02:48Donald says I quack, as if I'd laid an egg.
02:52Quack do you, pondered his fireman.
02:55He whispered something to Duck and his driver.
02:58They were going to play a joke on Donald and pay him back for teasing Duck.
03:04The engines were busy for the rest of the day and nothing more was said.
03:17Not even a quack.
03:20But when at last Donald was asleep,
03:22Duck's driver and fireman popped something into his water tank.
03:28Next morning when Donald stopped for water,
03:30he found that he had an unexpected passenger aboard.
03:34A small white duckling popped out of his water tank.
03:38Now do, who's behind this? laughed Donald.
03:41The duckling was tame.
03:43She shared the fireman's sandwiches.
03:47And rode in the tender.
03:52The other engines enjoyed teasing Donald about her.
03:57Presently she grew tired of traveling and hopped off at a station.
04:03And there she stayed.
04:05That night Donald's driver and fireman got busy.
04:12And in the morning when Duck's crew arrived to look him over,
04:15they laughed and laughed.
04:17Look Duck, look what's under your bunker.
04:20It's a nest box with an egg in it.
04:22Donald opened a sleepy eye.
04:25Well, well, well.
04:27Ye must have laid it in the night, Duck.
04:29All unbeknownst.
04:31Then Duck laughed too.
04:33You win Donald.
04:34It'd take a clever engine to get the better of you.
04:37There's a pond near the duckling's station.
04:40Here she often swims and welcomes the trains as they pass by.
04:44The station master calls her Dilly.
04:46But to everyone else, she is always Donald's duck.
04:50Morning Dog.
