Edinburgh beckons for Chichester Festival Youth Theatre duo

Chichester Festival Youth Theatre members Evelina Rudasa and Kitty Peirson have written a play which they are taking to this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

00:00Good afternoon. Lovely to speak to Kitty and Evelina again now. Kitty and Evelina,

00:06Chisholm Festival Youth Theater members, you're doing something super exciting. It's been months

00:10in preparation, bubbling over, getting ready. You're almost there. You are off to the Edinburgh

00:15Fringe with your own play, Why Won't They Eat the Cake? It's going to be at The Space on the mile

00:20from August the 18th to the 23rd. Evelina, it's exciting, isn't it? You must be super hyped.

00:28It's so exciting. Absolutely. I mean, even the concept of doing all this already just feels so

00:35crazy. But yeah, I mean, it feels, it also feels so scary at the same time. I mean, it's a really big

00:43thing to do. And I mean, I feel like there's so many, you know, shows going on and stuff. But I

00:51mean, at least I personally, I don't really hear about the kind of journey that people take to get

00:56that there. And you know, now I'm in it. Again, there's so much competition, you've got to really

01:00stand out. Have you? Yeah, definitely. Yeah, it's, it's quite a big thing. But it's just so exciting

01:11to kind of put your own work on the stage and have people, you know, come and see it. And

01:19it's just crazy. I mean, to bring in Kitty, it's been a huge part of your life, isn't it? You were

01:25saying just now that in a way, you're quite looking forward to getting your life back and being a

01:29normal teenager when it's over. Except, of course, you still have the itch to do it again, wouldn't

01:33you? Yeah, it's, it's sort of this thing that you just never imagine yourself doing. And once you do

01:40it, you can't go back. It's just this wild journey where you gain skills and things you would just

01:47never imagine yourself doing when you see I do an edit. Oh, I'm doing an Edinburgh Fringe show.

01:51No one imagines like the finance spreadsheets, and the marketing phone calls, and the business

01:58and the like, flame safe in your set. It's just the things people would never imagine that you gain

02:06as skills. And it's going to be weird to just kind of come out of it and have those skills, but not

02:11practically be using them in a way.

02:13Yeah. And Evelina, you must feel the same, gaining skills, useful skills for potential future careers.

02:20Yeah, I mean, I've also definitely learned a lot about kind of like marketing and things like that

02:25and media. And I studied it in high school, but actually like being on the kind of like actual

02:36media side of doing interviews, yes, it's so different. It's something that you can't learn

02:42in the classroom and something that I didn't learn in the classroom, you know. Yeah.

02:47And to come back to you, Kitty, just describe the play. What's the play all about? It's got

02:52a great title, isn't it?

02:53Thank you. Um, the play centers around these two girls the night after an 18th birthday party.

03:04And they unpack everything that's happened at the party. But sort of within this, they unpack

03:09their own lives and their relationships and the reasons why they cling on to this clearly,

03:14really, really, really dysfunctional relationship. But why, even though it's dysfunctional, how

03:24it functions for them and what they need in their lives. I don't know if that makes any

03:27sense.

03:28It makes total sense. And there's a bit of you two in it, is there?

03:31Yeah. Um, there is us. And then so we're now a team of, yeah, we've gained people since

03:37we last chapter. We're now a team of four. Wow. Five, four and a half. You've got half

03:45a person. We've gained a director, a lighting designer, and a front of house. So four and

03:53a half. So it sounds like it's all coming together. And to do this, you've raised around four and

03:58a half thousand pounds, which is pretty cool, isn't it? And Evelina, wouldn't it be lovely?

04:03You're doing London, you're doing Edinburgh, you've got to do Chichester as well, haven't

04:06you? Yeah. Yeah, ideally. I mean, yeah, we would definitely really love to kind of bring

04:12it locally. But I mean, I think that might be something to explore more in the future.

04:19Well, you've got to think about Edinburgh for the moment.

04:21Yeah, no, but it's definitely on the to do list, 100%.

04:24Fantastic. Well, lovely to speak to you both again. Congratulations on completing the fundraising.

04:30That's no small achievement. And you're on the cusp of doing it for real in Edinburgh.
