Eastwood urges Starmer to give commitment that ‘no murderer shall be seen as above the law’

00:00The Prime Minister will never know exactly how much it meant to be victims of the troubles

00:05in Northern Ireland, from right across society, when he came, looked them in their eyes and

00:10promised them that no murderer would be immune from prosecution. Can he tell us when the

00:15last time he spoke to the Taoiseach about the shared approach to this issue was, and

00:20can he recommit today to those victims to ensure that no murderer will be seen as above

00:26the law?

00:27Mr Speaker, this is a really important issue. Can I begin by saying that I have a profound

00:35respect and depth to our veterans who served? This is a complicated issue, and we have got

00:42to get this right. Veterans are at risk because of the false promises of the last government.

00:51Let's be clear. They made a false promise of immunity that does not exist. It was unlawful,

00:58it was struck down, and it was undeliverable. Their failed Legacy Act leaves veterans exposed

01:05with no settled process. We will create a secure, transparent system that protects veterans

01:13from unjustified persecution, and gives victims, families and survivors the confidence that they

01:20need in the process.
