House Of Representatives Holds Moment Of Silence To Honor Victims Of Texas Floods

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) led the House floor in honoring victims of the deadly flooding in Central Texas, and members on the floor observed a moment of silence.

00:00Mr. Speaker, I rise today mourning the loss of life in the state of Texas, but that touched

00:17profoundly everybody across this great country.

00:20So many people who are visiting this part of Texas.

00:23And obviously we've been struck by the loss of life, particularly for those young girls

00:29associated with Camp Mystic.

00:33And it has been grueling.

00:36It was a rough week, a lot of destruction, a lot of beautiful parts of our state that

00:44were destroyed, but we will rebuild.

00:50And here's the thing that I want to say, when people talk about destruction, what will not

00:55be destroyed is the spirit of the people of Texas and the spirit of the people that those

01:01camps represent.

01:02The spirit of the little girls who are already talking about wanting to go back.

01:07The spirit of the people associated with Dick Eastland, the camp director of Camp Mystic who

01:12gave his life trying to save those little girls.

01:16The spirit of Jane Ragsdale who lost her life saving five little girls.

01:23Her guitar was found down the Guadalupe River just yesterday.

01:27The spirit of all of the little girls that were riding in the bus as they left Camp Mystic,

01:32singing hymns, expressing their faith as they were looking at the destruction that they couldn't

01:38possibly comprehend as they left that camp.

01:41But they were still putting their faith in their Lord and their Savior.

01:45And if there's anything that we can take out of this, it's that sense of community

01:48and that sense of pride that we have in knowing that we will rebuild and that we will come

01:52together.

01:53But that sense that we know that the power of the cross that stands on the hills over

01:59the city of Kerrville, the power of the faith of the people of Texas, the power of the faith

02:03of the people of this nation who have responded, the millions of dollars that have come in

02:08to the community foundation of the Hill Country, $30 million last week, I think that number

02:13is rising.

02:14Thanks to all of you here in this delegation.

02:17Most of you have reached out to me personally and to my friends and colleagues in this delegation.

02:21It's not just Kerr County, it's the state of Texas.

02:24Many of my colleagues have been affected across the state.

02:27But thank you for your prayers.

02:29Thank you for your well wishes.

02:31But just know that their spirit endures.

02:33And I cannot tell you how proud I am of the people of Texas and the people of Kerr County,

02:38Texas and the first responders who are today back in the floodwaters resuming the search

02:44for the missing.

02:45And there's still over 100 missing in that part of our state.

02:49So with that, Mr. Speaker, I would ask for a moment of silence.

02:54The chair asks all those present in the chamber as well as members and staff throughout the Capitol

02:58to please join us in a moment of silence.

03:28Mr. Speaker, if I may, there are some little girls from Camp Mystic in the gallery.
