Taiwan's Army Practices Regrouping After an Enemy Landing

What would happen if Taiwan were unable to stop an enemy invasion? That’s what Taiwan's military is practicing on day seven of the annual Han Kuang exercises.

00:00In the outlying islands of Penghu in the Taiwan Strait, soldiers practice firing at sea,

00:11using as many weapons as they can to prevent an enemy from making it ashore.

00:17It's part of Taiwan's strategy to deter a possible Chinese invasion.

00:22But in northern Taiwan, soldiers are practicing what would happen if things didn't go according

00:27to plan.

00:29Simulating an enemy that has landed and is pushing inland, Taiwan's military is learning

00:34how to regroup.

00:35That is, by the end of this army, it will continue to lead to the enemy of the army.

00:54The scenario comes on day seven of Taiwan's Hanguang military exercise, which tests the

00:59country's defenses against an all-out attack from China.

01:03But this year, the drills are more realistic and include exercises that Taiwan might not

01:08be prepared for.

01:09A big part of this year's Hanguang military exercises is assuming the worst-case scenario.

01:14And that's why Taiwan's military is simulating what would happen if it lost control of the

01:18strategic area near the country's capital.

01:21This area is close to what Taiwan's military calls a red beach, a suitable landing area that's

01:26close to key infrastructure that could make Taiwan vulnerable.

01:30This beach has a constant military presence and is used every year to simulate an enemy invasion.

01:37I think the prime target for that is really the port of Taipei itself and the Bali beach

01:44right next to it.

01:45And also the opening to the Tamsui River that can lead you right into the heart of Taipei

01:51and be within the heart of the government district of Taipei in 10 to 15 minutes.

01:56That's why Taiwan is trying to break away from past habits and use the Hanguang exercise

02:01to test new strategies to add to its overall defense plan.

02:05While preventing an enemy from reaching the shore is plan A, drills like this one help Taiwan

02:10create an effective plan B.
