00:00Hello my dear friends, and welcome back to another Star Wars video.

00:03It is I, coming at you once again, your favourite galactic hostess, Star Wars Meg.

00:08And today, we have some unprecedented, surprising comments from Rian Johnson,

00:13a bit of a polarising figure in the Star Wars fandom, the writer and director of The Last Jedi,

00:18the movie which many fans point to as the start of the Disney Star Wars decline.

00:22And in a brand new interview with Rollingstone.com, he not only teases the next instalment of Knives Out,

00:27but he also reflected on his Star Wars work, The Last Jedi,

00:31and he also provided an update on his upcoming Star Wars trilogy, the one that was announced nearly a decade ago.

00:36And let's be honest, I don't think it's ever going to happen.

00:39But Rian's given us some new insights, and in typical Rian fashion, he is subverting expectations.

00:45Let's begin with some of his more controversial comments.

00:48This one is already riling up fans, and causing a bit of drama.

00:52Rian insists The Last Jedi doesn't undo anything that J.J. Abrams did in The Force Awakens,

00:58I actually agree with this, but not for the reasons you might think.

01:01So Rian says, his movie is a logical continuation from episode 7.

01:06He furthered these characters, and wrote the next step for them.

01:09Now some fans disagree.

01:10They say, well you didn't have to have Luke be a miserable, depressed old man.

01:14He didn't have to chuck the lightsaber over his shoulder.

01:17And while that's true, we have to be honest, and we have to be fair,

01:20J.J. Abrams is the one who puts Luke on the island in The Force Awakens.

01:24Rian had to explain why, and come up with a reason why the hero of the Battle of Endor lost all hope.

01:30Why would the most well-known Jedi in the galaxy during this time exile himself?

01:34Abandon his friends and family, the New Republic, the Resistance?

01:38What would have caused the man who redeemed Darth Vader to want to run away like this?

01:43Having to come up with such an explanation is a very heavy task.

01:47Do I agree with the way Rian did it?

01:48Absolutely not.

01:50But to claim he bears all the responsibility is just disingenuous.

01:53And on the subject of consistency within the sequel movies,

01:56I would argue J.J.'s The Rise of Skywalker is the one that's inconsistent.

02:00That's the movie that tried to invalidate episode 8, and course correct.

02:04I understand there are defenders of episodes 8 and 9,

02:07but had they had a plan from the start, so many of these creative choices could have been averted.

02:13Next up, my friends, Rian Johnson talks about the decision to kill Snoke.

02:17Another really frustrating choice, because we still know so little about him,

02:22and his story was changed about three times.

02:24At first he was a relic of the old empire.

02:27He watched as it rose and collapsed.

02:29And the intrigue of him, the mystique, the unknown, was just so appetizing and so delicious.

02:35That's why around 2015 and 2016, fan theories and speculation were rampant.

02:41This was around the same time Star Wars YouTube channels were kicking off.

02:44It was such a cool time, pre The Last Jedi.

02:47Snoke theories range from making sense, to being extremely far-fetched.

02:51But regardless, we were eating up any breadcrumbs we could get.

02:54We were trying to figure out who this guy was.

02:56Was he Mace Windu?

02:57Was he Darth Plagueis?

02:58Was he someone else from the days of the Republic?

03:01And then, in episode 8, he dies, and we have no answers.

03:05No information about his scars, his name, how he became the Supreme Leader,

03:09and how the First Order was founded.

03:11And so then, Rian Johnson took pleasure in mocking fans who had any kind of theory about him.

03:16And so afterwards, to retcon things, J.J. Abrams made him a clone of Palpatine.

03:21It was so random, so last minute.

03:23But to this day, the canon timeline of his existence makes no sense.

03:27We still have so many questions.

03:28But Rian now says this.

03:30It's all a matter of perspective and phrasing.

03:33But to me, I didn't easily dispense with Snoke.

03:36I took great pains in using him in the most dramatic, impactful way I could.

03:40And that was to fast-track Kylo Ren to the dark side.

03:43To become the new leader of the First Order.

03:45And that's another thing.

03:46I have a feeling he never intended Kylo to have a redemption.

03:49So that's also another interesting change.

03:51But Snoke was always meant to be a plot device.

03:54He wasn't meant to be an ancient Sith.

03:55Someone with an elaborate backstory who fought this person and who knows this person.

04:00He was there as a catalyst to propel Kylo Ren.

04:03Snoke was always intended to be a nobody.

04:06And so now, my friends, Rian talks about his upcoming trilogy.

04:10Right off the bat, Rian has changed his tune.

04:12He used to be so certain that one day he was going to return to Lucasfilm and work on those movies.

04:17But now you get the impression that even he knows it's never going to happen.

04:21So here's the quote.

04:22It was all very conceptual.

04:24There was never any outline or a treatment or anything.

04:27Nothing really happened.

04:28We had a great time working on The Last Jedi.

04:31And Lucasfilm said, let's keep doing it.

04:33And then he says he kicked some ideas around with Kathy.

04:36But nothing ever came of it.

04:37But now, my friends, instead of talking about when it's going to happen further down the line.

04:41He's using the word, if.

04:43So instead of saying, I'm going to return to this one day.

04:46When Knives Out is done, I'm going to focus on my Star Wars trilogy.

04:49He says this.

04:50If down the line there's an opportunity to do it, I would be thrilled.

04:54That is a stark difference to his comments in the past.

04:57Even as recently as 2024.

04:59Even Kathleen Kennedy was defending him.

05:02It was always a case of, whenever Rian has time to do it.

05:05Knives Out got in the way.

05:06He's working on a few other projects.

05:08But when he's done with those, he will return to Star Wars.

05:11But clearly things have changed.

05:12And I don't think Disney and Lucasfilm want to take the risk.

05:15Because when they greenlit his trilogy, it was before the backlash to The Last Jedi.

05:19So Lucasfilm had no idea what was to come.

05:22And so now with the Star Wars movie focus being on The Mandalorian and Grogu.

05:25Star Wars Starfighter, Dawn of the Jedi.

05:27The Rey movie.

05:28I very much doubt the Rian Johnson trilogy is ever going to happen.

05:32And come on.

05:32Rian's intelligent.

05:34I think even he knows it.

05:35He's just trying to save face.

05:37He knows how a lot of people felt about his movie.

05:40Does he want to return?

05:41Sure.

05:42But I just don't see it.

05:43And I also just want to point out.

05:45I don't know if I believe him when he says there was no outline for the trilogy.

05:48From some of the things I've heard.

05:50And this is just through the grapevine.

05:51Rian was going to make a Dawn of the Jedi trilogy.

05:54Before it was handed to James Mangold as a standalone.

05:57J.J. Abrams is the one who introduced Arcto Island in The Force Awakens.

06:01But it was Rian Johnson who furthered the notion it was the first Jedi Temple.

06:05And so his trilogy would have gone back 25,000 years.

06:08And given us the first Jedi.

06:10Which in a way would have rhymed with The Last Jedi.

06:13And tonally it might have been very similar.

06:15For all we know.

06:16It could have been good.

06:17Rian is a very adventurous and talented filmmaker.

06:20But I don't think he was right for episode 8.

06:22And so finally.

06:24Rian says he never intended to direct episode 9.

06:27He was asked if Lucasfilm approached him.

06:29Or if he wanted to do it.

06:30And he says.

06:31No.

06:32Absolutely not.

06:33The reality is if I thought I was doing both of them.

06:36I would have ended my movie the same way.

06:37From the very start.

06:39The assignment was.

06:40You're going to do episode 8.

06:41And someone else is going to do 9.

06:43And I can understand why this leaves a bad taste in many fans mouths.

06:46Because Rian's aim with this movie was to give us a middle installment.

06:50That subverted expectations.

06:52In the past.

06:53He's on record saying he loves when his movies divide people.

06:56He would hate if everyone loved it.

06:57He wants half the audience to be obsessed with it.

07:00And the other half to hate it.

07:02And if that was his approach to Star Wars.

07:04Then it's kind of like him saying.

07:05This is going to be my fingerprint.

07:07On the franchise.

07:08Instead of writing something that serves the overall story.

07:12And I don't think Star Wars fans are ever going to get over this.

07:14It's the reason I don't think Lucasfilm's ever going to want him working on Star Wars ever again.

07:18Because whenever he's interviewed.

07:20Whenever he makes comments like this.

07:22Fans jump on it.

07:23And it reopens the wounds from back in 2017.

07:26And just to rub a bit more salt into all of this.

07:28Rian admits he hated the prequel trilogy when it came out.

07:32And the ironic thing is.

07:33In terms of themes.

07:34Of all the sequel movies.

07:36The Last Jedi is the most compatible with something like Revenge of the Sith.

07:39Luke Skywalker even mentions the rise of Palpatine.

07:42How in their hubris.

07:44The Jedi allowed the Sith to rise under their noses.

07:46So those are Rian's comments.

07:48And I guess very little has changed.

07:51Other than maybe his comments about his trilogy.
