00:00
Hello my dear friends, and welcome back to another Star Wars video.
00:03
It is I, coming at you once again, your favourite galactic hostess, Star Wars Meg.
00:08
And today, we have some unprecedented, surprising comments from Rian Johnson,
00:13
a bit of a polarising figure in the Star Wars fandom, the writer and director of The Last Jedi,
00:18
the movie which many fans point to as the start of the Disney Star Wars decline.
00:22
And in a brand new interview with Rollingstone.com, he not only teases the next instalment of Knives Out,
00:27
but he also reflected on his Star Wars work, The Last Jedi,
00:31
and he also provided an update on his upcoming Star Wars trilogy, the one that was announced nearly a decade ago.
00:36
And let's be honest, I don't think it's ever going to happen.
00:39
But Rian's given us some new insights, and in typical Rian fashion, he is subverting expectations.
00:45
Let's begin with some of his more controversial comments.
00:48
This one is already riling up fans, and causing a bit of drama.
00:52
Rian insists The Last Jedi doesn't undo anything that J.J. Abrams did in The Force Awakens,
00:58
I actually agree with this, but not for the reasons you might think.
01:01
So Rian says, his movie is a logical continuation from episode 7.
01:06
He furthered these characters, and wrote the next step for them.
01:09
Now some fans disagree.
01:10
They say, well you didn't have to have Luke be a miserable, depressed old man.
01:14
He didn't have to chuck the lightsaber over his shoulder.
01:17
And while that's true, we have to be honest, and we have to be fair,
01:20
J.J. Abrams is the one who puts Luke on the island in The Force Awakens.
01:24
Rian had to explain why, and come up with a reason why the hero of the Battle of Endor lost all hope.
01:30
Why would the most well-known Jedi in the galaxy during this time exile himself?
01:34
Abandon his friends and family, the New Republic, the Resistance?
01:38
What would have caused the man who redeemed Darth Vader to want to run away like this?
01:43
Having to come up with such an explanation is a very heavy task.
01:47
Do I agree with the way Rian did it?
01:48
Absolutely not.
01:50
But to claim he bears all the responsibility is just disingenuous.
01:53
And on the subject of consistency within the sequel movies,
01:56
I would argue J.J.'s The Rise of Skywalker is the one that's inconsistent.
02:00
That's the movie that tried to invalidate episode 8, and course correct.
02:04
I understand there are defenders of episodes 8 and 9,
02:07
but had they had a plan from the start, so many of these creative choices could have been averted.
02:13
Next up, my friends, Rian Johnson talks about the decision to kill Snoke.
02:17
Another really frustrating choice, because we still know so little about him,
02:22
and his story was changed about three times.
02:24
At first he was a relic of the old empire.
02:27
He watched as it rose and collapsed.
02:29
And the intrigue of him, the mystique, the unknown, was just so appetizing and so delicious.
02:35
That's why around 2015 and 2016, fan theories and speculation were rampant.
02:41
This was around the same time Star Wars YouTube channels were kicking off.
02:44
It was such a cool time, pre The Last Jedi.
02:47
Snoke theories range from making sense, to being extremely far-fetched.
02:51
But regardless, we were eating up any breadcrumbs we could get.
02:54
We were trying to figure out who this guy was.
02:56
Was he Mace Windu?
02:57
Was he Darth Plagueis?
02:58
Was he someone else from the days of the Republic?
03:01
And then, in episode 8, he dies, and we have no answers.
03:05
No information about his scars, his name, how he became the Supreme Leader,
03:09
and how the First Order was founded.
03:11
And so then, Rian Johnson took pleasure in mocking fans who had any kind of theory about him.
03:16
And so afterwards, to retcon things, J.J. Abrams made him a clone of Palpatine.
03:21
It was so random, so last minute.
03:23
But to this day, the canon timeline of his existence makes no sense.
03:27
We still have so many questions.
03:28
But Rian now says this.
03:30
It's all a matter of perspective and phrasing.
03:33
But to me, I didn't easily dispense with Snoke.
03:36
I took great pains in using him in the most dramatic, impactful way I could.
03:40
And that was to fast-track Kylo Ren to the dark side.
03:43
To become the new leader of the First Order.
03:45
And that's another thing.
03:46
I have a feeling he never intended Kylo to have a redemption.
03:49
So that's also another interesting change.
03:51
But Snoke was always meant to be a plot device.
03:54
He wasn't meant to be an ancient Sith.
03:55
Someone with an elaborate backstory who fought this person and who knows this person.
04:00
He was there as a catalyst to propel Kylo Ren.
04:03
Snoke was always intended to be a nobody.
04:06
And so now, my friends, Rian talks about his upcoming trilogy.
04:10
Right off the bat, Rian has changed his tune.
04:12
He used to be so certain that one day he was going to return to Lucasfilm and work on those movies.
04:17
But now you get the impression that even he knows it's never going to happen.
04:21
So here's the quote.
04:22
It was all very conceptual.
04:24
There was never any outline or a treatment or anything.
04:27
Nothing really happened.
04:28
We had a great time working on The Last Jedi.
04:31
And Lucasfilm said, let's keep doing it.
04:33
And then he says he kicked some ideas around with Kathy.
04:36
But nothing ever came of it.
04:37
But now, my friends, instead of talking about when it's going to happen further down the line.
04:41
He's using the word, if.
04:43
So instead of saying, I'm going to return to this one day.
04:46
When Knives Out is done, I'm going to focus on my Star Wars trilogy.
04:49
He says this.
04:50
If down the line there's an opportunity to do it, I would be thrilled.
04:54
That is a stark difference to his comments in the past.
04:57
Even as recently as 2024.
04:59
Even Kathleen Kennedy was defending him.
05:02
It was always a case of, whenever Rian has time to do it.
05:05
Knives Out got in the way.
05:06
He's working on a few other projects.
05:08
But when he's done with those, he will return to Star Wars.
05:11
But clearly things have changed.
05:12
And I don't think Disney and Lucasfilm want to take the risk.
05:15
Because when they greenlit his trilogy, it was before the backlash to The Last Jedi.
05:19
So Lucasfilm had no idea what was to come.
05:22
And so now with the Star Wars movie focus being on The Mandalorian and Grogu.
05:25
Star Wars Starfighter, Dawn of the Jedi.
05:27
The Rey movie.
05:28
I very much doubt the Rian Johnson trilogy is ever going to happen.
05:32
And come on.
05:32
Rian's intelligent.
05:34
I think even he knows it.
05:35
He's just trying to save face.
05:37
He knows how a lot of people felt about his movie.
05:40
Does he want to return?
05:41
Sure.
05:42
But I just don't see it.
05:43
And I also just want to point out.
05:45
I don't know if I believe him when he says there was no outline for the trilogy.
05:48
From some of the things I've heard.
05:50
And this is just through the grapevine.
05:51
Rian was going to make a Dawn of the Jedi trilogy.
05:54
Before it was handed to James Mangold as a standalone.
05:57
J.J. Abrams is the one who introduced Arcto Island in The Force Awakens.
06:01
But it was Rian Johnson who furthered the notion it was the first Jedi Temple.
06:05
And so his trilogy would have gone back 25,000 years.
06:08
And given us the first Jedi.
06:10
Which in a way would have rhymed with The Last Jedi.
06:13
And tonally it might have been very similar.
06:15
For all we know.
06:16
It could have been good.
06:17
Rian is a very adventurous and talented filmmaker.
06:20
But I don't think he was right for episode 8.
06:22
And so finally.
06:24
Rian says he never intended to direct episode 9.
06:27
He was asked if Lucasfilm approached him.
06:29
Or if he wanted to do it.
06:30
And he says.
06:31
No.
06:32
Absolutely not.
06:33
The reality is if I thought I was doing both of them.
06:36
I would have ended my movie the same way.
06:37
From the very start.
06:39
The assignment was.
06:40
You're going to do episode 8.
06:41
And someone else is going to do 9.
06:43
And I can understand why this leaves a bad taste in many fans mouths.
06:46
Because Rian's aim with this movie was to give us a middle installment.
06:50
That subverted expectations.
06:52
In the past.
06:53
He's on record saying he loves when his movies divide people.
06:56
He would hate if everyone loved it.
06:57
He wants half the audience to be obsessed with it.
07:00
And the other half to hate it.
07:02
And if that was his approach to Star Wars.
07:04
Then it's kind of like him saying.
07:05
This is going to be my fingerprint.
07:07
On the franchise.
07:08
Instead of writing something that serves the overall story.
07:12
And I don't think Star Wars fans are ever going to get over this.
07:14
It's the reason I don't think Lucasfilm's ever going to want him working on Star Wars ever again.
07:18
Because whenever he's interviewed.
07:20
Whenever he makes comments like this.
07:22
Fans jump on it.
07:23
And it reopens the wounds from back in 2017.
07:26
And just to rub a bit more salt into all of this.
07:28
Rian admits he hated the prequel trilogy when it came out.
07:32
And the ironic thing is.
07:33
In terms of themes.
07:34
Of all the sequel movies.
07:36
The Last Jedi is the most compatible with something like Revenge of the Sith.
07:39
Luke Skywalker even mentions the rise of Palpatine.
07:42
How in their hubris.
07:44
The Jedi allowed the Sith to rise under their noses.
07:46
So those are Rian's comments.
07:48
And I guess very little has changed.
07:51
Other than maybe his comments about his trilogy.
07:53
But what do you guys think?
