Dr. Ourland Tantengco, researcher of the Defeat HPV study, said that 1 in 7 women in the Philippines will likely test positive for human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually-transmitted disease. Tantengco conducted a study with over 1,100 women from residents of Tondo, Manila, and Naic, Cavite.
The study revealed that in Tondo, 15.1% of women tested positive for HPV. In Naic, 12.8% of women were infected, and one in four of them had multiple strains.

00:00So we performed pap smear. So again, yung pap smear will detect if there are abnormal cells in the cervix.
00:06It will not tell you if there's HPV infection or not, but it will tell you if there's already cancer cells there or abnormal cells.
00:13So in our study, we saw that 5.3% of women actually have abnormal cytology or meron na kanina detect na nagsisimula yung cancer or kasimulang bukol dun sa mga patients in Tonto Manila.
00:28And half of these women were actually infected with HPV.
00:34So yung mga may abnormal na cervical cytology, meron silang HPV infection din.
00:40And this shows us that HPV really is associated with cervical cancer.
00:45So I will not burden you with the different types, but this is just showing the different abnormalities in the cervix.
00:52But I want to go straight here siguro because this is the most important information.
00:58In Tonto Manila, 90 women or 15.1% of the cohort actually tested positive for HPV infection.
01:06Meaning, around 1 for every 7 women ay infected ng HPV.
01:12So ganoon siya ka-common.
01:14So kung ilan ba tayo, ilan ba mga babae dito?
01:17So kung 14 kayo, or 7 dalawa, most likely.
01:22Kung gagawin din natin yung data nito sa mundo.
01:251 in every 7 women will test positive for HPV.
01:29So we detected 25 HPV genotypes, 15 high-risk, 6 low-risk.
01:35And this is actually, nakakalungkot yung data na ito.
01:4221 out of the 90, 23% of women na may HPV infection,
01:49they're not just infected with one genotype, but they're infected with multiple HPV genotypes.
01:55So that's alarming because as you increase your genotypes,
02:01you also increase your risk of getting cervical cancer.
02:04Diba?
02:05Imbista isa lang yung nang-infect sa'yo,
02:07dito sa mga women na ito, around 1 for, they have multiple genotypes.
02:12So these are some of our patients with multiple infections.
02:19We have 1 patients with 6 genotypes.
02:226 na klase ng virus yung naka-infect sa kanya.
02:26So for sure, this will be a higher risk of getting cervical cancer later
02:32compared to others with just single infection or with just 2 or 3 infection with HPV.
