00:00France announced a deal with New Caledonia on Saturday, which would grant the overseas
00:06territory more autonomy. The accord calls for the creation of a state of Caledonia,
00:13but which would remain French. It will also allow for the creation of a Caledonian nationality
00:19alongside the French one. President Emmanuel Macron hailed the agreement as historic,
00:24however, it stopped short of full independence sought by indigenous Canucks. For decades,
00:31the South Pacific territory faced political tensions between those seeking independence
00:36and those loyal to France. And last year, deadly riots broke out over a proposed controversial
00:43electoral reform. Macron now hopes the accord will allow for New Caledonia to build together
00:50towards a shared future.
