During a discussion at an Indianapolis Bar Association luncheon in Indianapolis, Indiana, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson discussed the formality within the Supreme Court.
Transcript
00:00I didn't realize how formal the court really is.
00:05I kind of thought maybe when the justices go into conference,
00:08they let their hair down a little bit, you know.
00:12No.
00:14That's a hard no.
00:15We speak in order, seniority order.
00:19We vote in seniority order.
00:23We shake each other's hands every time in a ritual that we do
00:29before going out to the bench
00:31or if we're just having a conference day before conference every time.
00:36And so it's kind of interesting and neat,
00:38but it's quite a formal institution.
00:40Yeah.
00:41Was that what you expected?
00:42I don't think I expected it that.
00:45Okay.
00:45I mean, certainly I got a glimpse of that from the clerkship,
00:49but I'm talking about what we do behind closed doors.
