00:00At this point in his career, it's not hard to imagine him playing more of a hybrid role,
00:05maybe even shifting to safety, or being a veteran leader who plays situational snaps.
00:11With 173 career starts and tons of playoff experience, Gilmore would bring a steady
00:17presence to any locker room. The Mercenary Cornerback
00:20Since leaving New England in 2020, Gilmore has kind of become a hired gun. He's played for four
00:27different teams in four years, stepping in where needed and doing his job well. That kind of
00:33flexibility could actually help him land one more opportunity. A lot of teams might be looking for
00:39exactly that, a smart, experienced, dependable vet who won't make mental mistakes and can teach
00:45younger corners while still making a play or two himself. What's next? Gilmore turns 35 in September,
00:52but he's not done yet. The NFL is unpredictable, injuries happen, secondaries get thin,
00:59and coaches look for veteran help. Don't be surprised if Gilmore ends up in a camp before
01:04the preseason ends. He's not looking for a farewell tour. He's looking for a team that believes he can
01:11still make a difference, and if that team comes calling, don't bet against him making a few more
01:16plays before it's all said and done. At 34 years old and with 13 NFL seasons behind him,
01:23Stephon Gilmore is far from ready to hang up his cleats. The former defensive player of the year
01:29still believes he has something to offer, but he's in no rush to just sign with any team.
01:35I want to play this year, Gilmore said recently on the Money Down podcast.
01:39It's just got to be the right situation. I'm not just gonna sign anywhere. I still love the game.
01:47I still can contribute. It's just got to be the right place.
01:51That pretty much sums up where Gilmore is in his career, still hungry, still capable,
01:56but also smart about what's next. A veteran with plenty of experience.
02:02Gilmore has been around the league for a while. He's a five-time pro bowler,
02:05a two-time first-team all-pro, and was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2019.
02:13That same year, he was arguably the best corner in football. Since then, he's bounced around a bit,
02:19playing for the Panthers, Colts, Cowboys, and most recently, the Vikings.
02:25Even though he's not quite the shutdown corner he once was, Gilmore has stayed relatively durable
02:31and productive. In 2024 with Minnesota, he racked up 56 tackles and interception and defended nine
02:38passes. He played most of his snaps on the outside, 772 to be exact, but he also saw action closer to
02:47the line of scrimmage, 109 snaps in the box, to be precise. His PFF coverage grade last season was
02:5560.4, which is lower than his usual standard and one of the worst marks of his career. Still,
03:02his 77.6 run defense grade was solid, 22nd among all cornerbacks, which shows he can still be useful
03:10in the right system. Not looking to just fill a roster spot. Gilmore made it clear, he's not signing
03:17with just any team. He wants to play, but it's about more than just collecting a paycheck or wearing
03:23a jersey for one more year. He's chasing the right fit. Team that has a real shot, maybe even a Super Bowl
03:30contender. That could mean reuniting with an old team, stepping in for a team that suffers a big
03:36injury in training camp, or even taking on a new role entirely.
