Filipino fishers on Tuesday, July 8, raised alarm over the growing number of Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS), saying their presence disrupts local livelihoods and puts both people and the environment at risk.

00:00Filipino fishers have raised alarm over the rising number of Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea,
00:09saying their presence puts both people and the environment at risk.
00:15Progressive Fisher Folk Group, Pambansang Lakas ng Tilusang Mamamalakayan ng Pilipinas or Pamalakaya,
00:22said the presence of almost 50 Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea is highly alarming.
00:29According to the group, fishers in Zambales, Palawan, and nearby coastal provinces have been avoiding traditional fishing areas out of fear.
00:39Pamalakaya also warned that the anchors and chains of Chinese vessels could damage coral reefs in the area,
00:46which may degrade marine and fishery resources in the region.
00:50Earlier, Philippine Navy spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Rare Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad,
00:58said 49 Chinese vessels were monitored throughout June, the most number in a month this year.
01:04These included 9 China Coast Guard and 14 People's Liberation Army Navy or planned ships in Bajo de Masinlok,
01:1312 CCG and 2 planned vessels in Ayungin Shoal, and 9 CCG and 3 planned ships near Pag-Asa Island.
