00:00Our solar system is but a speck in the huge galaxy we call the Milky Way.
00:30This vast wheel in space may contain a million stars comparable to our Sun, a million other
00:44planetary systems capable of sustaining forms of life similar to those we know.
00:53In the past 30 years we have learned a lot about our solar system, our galaxy and the cosmos
01:09at large.
01:11Satellites and space laboratories have borne scientists and electronic instruments above
01:16the turbulent layers of the Earth's atmosphere.
01:21For 25 years the radio telescope has been probing space over enormous distances.
01:28We have discovered radiation belts, pulsars, quasars and black holes.
01:43Scientists are now convinced that we are not alone in the universe.
02:02.
02:07.
02:11.
02:17.
02:49The UFO phenomenon provides crucial evidence to support this claim.
03:00Alien civilizations may have been monitoring us for over 3,000 years.
03:10This Egyptian papyrus describes a luminous display which startled the armies of Thutmose III.
03:19The Greeks and Romans, too, observed UFOs, and the curiosity they aroused during the Renaissance is evident from engravings and newspaper accounts of the time.
03:29The miniaturist Hans Glaser illustrated the Nuremberg sighting of 1561.
03:37Five years later, the Basel Gazette reported that at the hour of sunrise, many big black balls were seen in the air,
03:55traveling at great speeds toward the sun, then crashing into one another as if they were fighting.
04:00A great number of them became red and inflamed before being extinguished.
04:11Closer to the 20th century, we find more specific accounts of weird airships.
04:16But not until 1947 was the popular term of flying saucer coined,
04:23when Kenneth Arnold asserted that the fantastic phenomena he had witnessed must be manufactured objects from outer space.
04:31Photographs of UFOs flood in from all over the world.
04:48Many are hoaxes, like this picture of a hubcap.
04:52But the public is on the verge of panic.
04:55The U.S. Air Force instigates a commission of inquiry, Project Blue Book.
05:01A bulky report is published.
05:03Its conclusion?
05:04The UFO phenomenon is not worthy of scientific investigation.
05:09According to the Air Force, all UFOs can be accounted for in terms of man-made objects or natural occurrences.
05:37A lenticular cloud can look like a flying saucer.
05:52So can northern lights, created by the electrical particles which constitute solar winds,
05:58not to mention lightning balls and the like.
06:01Our sky is crisscrossed continually with aircraft, weather balloons, space research devices, barium clouds.
06:22But what should we believe, when there seems to be no available logical explanation for the claims of reliable witnesses?
06:35This is the question Dr. J. Allen Hynek began to ask himself.
06:42Dr. Hynek is an astronomer.
06:45While acting in his official capacity as scientific advisor to the U.S. Air Force,
06:50he found himself obliged to revise his attitude to UFOs drastically.
06:55This device is certainly food for the imagination.
07:06But man-made objects move in a predictable fashion.
07:10Balloons, for instance, follow the prevailing wind.
07:13When in doubt, an investigator can check with the Meteorological Office for the dates and times of balloon launchings
07:21and for details of wind directions.
07:32More recently, space rockets have begun to make spectacular re-entries into the atmosphere.
07:38Obviously, it is not hard to be fooled.
07:44Yet, there remain a good hundred thousand reports of UFO sightings which continue to baffle scientists.
07:59Dr. Hynek, the Dean of American Ufologists,
08:03established a system of classifying UFO reports
08:06which has since been generally adopted.
08:10Firstly, we have UFOs observed from far away.
08:14These may be further divided into lights seen at night.
08:22Objects which have been detected by radar
08:25as well as being observed by one or more witnesses.
08:29And disks seen during the day.
08:32The second group comprises encounters with closer objects.
08:36Close encounters of the first kind.
08:39Less than 150 yards away.
08:42Close encounters of the second kind.
08:45Physical traces are left.
08:47Close encounters of the third kind.
08:50Occupants have been observed.
08:51Let's look first at sightings made from a distance.
09:00Here is a good example of a daylight disc,
09:03photographed by Mr. and Mrs. Trent in 1950.
09:06Dr. Hynek's method of analysis gives predominance to sightings corroborated by more than one witness.
09:14The documents which you will see now
09:15were almost all confirmed by several observers,
09:19sometimes completely independent of one another.
09:21A strikingly similar UFO was snapped in 1954 by a French pilot.
09:29This film is a classic of its kind.
09:31Let's take another look at those luminous balls in slow motion.
09:44This document has been examined by various experts.
09:47Their carefully weighed conclusion
09:56is that the shining spheres could not possibly be aircraft reflecting the sun
10:01nor any other known objects.
10:04A remarkable number of reports come from highly responsible people.
10:27In this case, several air traffic controllers
10:30observed a nocturnal light through binoculars.
10:34It proceeded to split in two
10:36and then to perform aerial acrobatics,
10:39apparently oblivious to the strong wind which was blowing.
10:44Other UFO witnesses include radar technicians,
10:48pilots, police and army officers,
10:51astronauts and scientists, even astronomers.
11:00These nocturnal lights in boomerang formation
11:03were observed sweeping over a small town
11:06by several separate groups of people.
11:15Here's another film from the wave of flying saucer sightings
11:19which continued through the 1950s.
11:21It was shot by a Navy photographer.
11:24No logical explanation for the white discs has ever been found.
11:29The vertical bar was printed onto the film by the Air Force
11:33to facilitate analysis of the object's flight angles.
11:36The Air Force added these views of seagulls as an explanation,
11:43yet the sunlight flickers violently on the wings of the birds
11:46and the flight patterns have little in common.
11:48The comparison does not help us to identify the phenomenon.
12:02Above all, the main witness is adamant
12:05that the spheres he observed
12:07bore no resemblance to anything he had previously seen
12:10during his career as an aerial photographer.
12:13This frame is all that remains of a film
12:24shot by Corporal Ralph Mayer
12:26and confiscated by the Air Force.
12:34The UFO in this publicity photograph
12:37of a Martin B-57 prototype
12:40was only picked up on processing.
12:44We can use the same photo
12:46to illustrate the famous 1952 case
12:49of the American base at Davis-Montham.
12:56Two bright discs intercepted a B-36
12:59and stayed in formation with it for 20 seconds.
13:03The terror-stricken crew
13:05requested permission to land immediately.
13:08Nine members of base personnel
13:10also witnessed the UFOs from the ground.
13:22The official report on this case
13:24disappeared mysteriously.
13:26Government representatives
13:28have often gone as far
13:29as suppressing UFO evidence,
13:31but the exact scale of the cover-up operation
13:33is hard to judge.
13:35This Brazilian Navy vessel
13:56was on an oceanographic research mission.
13:59Forty-eight witnesses observed the UFO
14:01from the UFO from the deck.
14:07It had a metallic appearance
14:09with a halo of greenish phosphorescent vapor.
14:12The Brazilian government guaranteed
14:14the authenticity of the photographs
14:16and stood behind the witnesses.
14:18Thirty people observed this disc in New Mexico.
14:33The object was also picked up on radar.
14:37The number of witnesses
14:39is of paramount importance
14:41when considering the authenticity
14:43of a UFO photograph.
14:44When the photographer was on his own,
14:47as in this case,
14:48we have only his word.
14:53According to Rex Heflin,
14:55the dome left behind a ring of smoke,
14:58which he was able to photograph.
15:05Two good color photographs now.
15:07In each case,
15:08there were six witnesses.
15:09UFOs do not always look like spaceships.
15:13The variety of shapes,
15:14colors, and textures
15:15is extraordinary.
15:17The pulsating lights
15:19illustrated in this animation sequence
15:21suggest the presence
15:22of a strong magnetic field.
15:25Many researchers consider
15:26that the propulsion system of UFOs
15:28may be linked to their ability
15:30to create an electromagnetic field.
15:33of the world.
15:38The hippocampus
15:38is now
15:38visible in the gleaming
15:40of the world.
15:43The magnetic field
15:44and the electric field
15:44is now
15:45to become a perceber
15:46of the bird.
15:52And the micro-field
15:53is now
15:54to become a correspondent
15:55and the future
15:57is now
15:57to come to the building
15:58of the bird.
15:59That's right.
15:59And the way
16:00to the keep
16:00of the bird
16:01is now
16:01to become a regimented
16:02It is 1965. Ed White is the first American to walk in space.
16:17During the space program, many photographs of UFOs were taken.
16:23Unfortunately, however, these NASA documents are not accompanied by circumstantial reports.
16:32Astronauts Jim McDivitt, Frank Borman, and Neil Armstrong openly claimed that they had seen UFOs in space, as well as several others, including Russian cosmonauts.
16:46In many cases, NASA could not come up with any explanation.
17:02Also in 1965, a Canadian film board crew happened to be on the spot when this mysterious object appeared in the sky.
17:23It is the clouds and the camera which are moving.
17:34The object remained stationary and was seen by dozens of people over a period of several hours.
17:41Its size was fantastic.
17:43Nobody has been able to identify it.
17:52Abruptly, it disappeared as if it had swung into another dimension.
17:56We are still in the Canadian West.
18:14One evening in July, three men were returning home from a weekend devoted to mineral prospecting.
18:20Suddenly, an object appeared in the sky.
18:22Warren Smith took two photos.
18:24The first one shows the classical flying saucer shape of two pie plates, one on top of the other.
18:34Then the object went out of sight behind trees to reappear, rising vertically towards the south.
18:41Smith quickly made a second exposure.
18:47The UFO phenomenon is multifarious.
18:50There is perhaps a natural explanation for this luminous mass, but where do all the metallic-looking objects come from?
18:58Like a virus attacking an organism, they are challenging our concepts and disturbing our environment.
19:03One, zero, all engines running.
19:12Liftoff.
19:13We have a liftoff.
19:1432 minutes past the hour.
19:16Liftoff on Apollo 11.
19:20Roger, we've got a roll program.
19:21Tower cleared.
19:22Roger.
19:23Roger.
19:23In 1969, the American government put an end to its Project Blue Book.
19:38In this year, too, man made an old dream a reality.
19:42On July 20th, in the course of the longest night, three lone men cut the umbilical cord linking us to Mother Earth for the first time.
19:52But walking on the moon was only a beginning.
19:55Probes have since visited other planets, and one day we will explore other stars.
20:00Maybe other intelligent beings have already responded to the same urge.
20:10We know that some planetary systems are millions of years older than ours.
20:15Perhaps the galaxy has already been colonized by means of a technology infinitely more advanced than our own.
20:23Interstellar traffic may be heavier than today's air traffic over the United States.
20:30The crew of the Apollo 11 mission would also see things.
20:38After their first day in space, Armstrong and Aldrin observed a strange object traveling slowly between their rocket and the moon.
20:47It was huge and L-shaped, but no photograph of it has been published.
21:00Let's imagine that when we landed on the moon, the local population had been lined up to welcome us.
21:26What would we have done?
21:29We would probably have said, take me to your leader, and attempted to make some official contact, if at all possible.
21:39Here we have one of the profoundly disturbing aspects of the UFO phenomenon.
21:44Their occupants, in general, make no effort to enter into contact.
21:49On the contrary, they seem rather to avoid it systematically.
21:53Engine arm off.
21:55413 is in.
22:00We copy you down, Eagle.
22:02Listen, uh...
22:05Tranquility base here.
22:07The Eagle has landed.
22:14I'm going to step off the land now.
22:16That's one small step for man.
22:30One giant leap for mankind.
22:46During the Apollo program, these strange luminous balls were photographed close to the moon and close to Earth, this impressive, big, misshapen object.
23:16The astronauts of the Skylab project also saw UFOs.
23:20The Skylab 2 crew observed an extremely bright, round object rotating on itself.
23:29Here, a shape which is suggestive of a vehicle with lights.
23:33In the 70s now, in Montreal, Michel M. Beaux saw this squadron of lights over the St. Lawrence.
23:46This object projected truncated shafts of light, frequently observed elsewhere as well.
23:57The shafts of light have the amazing capacity to lengthen and retract at a rate visible to the human eye.
24:04In Switzerland, a professional photographer and two friends watched this object suspended in the air.
24:20This bizarre trajectory was photographed near Kansas City in 1975.
24:29On the very same evening, at the same time, 1045, on November 10th,
24:33a geophysicist noticed an unusual geomagnetic disturbance recorded by his instruments.
24:39Let's take a look now at two exceptional documents.
24:53First, a film shot in California from a helicopter by a professional cameraman filming coastal scenes.
25:00It lasts only 12 seconds.
25:02In slow motion.
25:16What can this silvery metallic object be?
25:19Its superstructure bathed in sunlight, moving at a speed of 160 miles per hour.
25:25It is not a balloon, and quite obviously, not a cloud.
25:32A television crew was shooting a car commercial in Guatemala
25:54when a fantastic object erupted into the sky over the city.
25:58It was observed by many witnesses.
26:00The cameraman's reflexes were good.
26:04Without stopping to think, he panned his video camera skyward.
26:07In this remarkable document,
26:37a fantastic happening explodes the routine of daily life
26:40with spectacular unexpectedness.
26:43Stunned, unable to believe their eyes,
26:45passers-by in the busy streets of Guatemala's capital city
26:48crane their necks for a last glimpse of the UFO.
26:53Here it is again in slow motion.
26:56The original videotape was transferred to 16mm film,
26:59which accounts for the flickering lines in the picture.
27:07THE END
27:37This film is real.
28:03The object we see is real, like thousands of others.
28:08But one question remains unanswered, what are they?
28:31Are UFOs reconnaissance missions from intelligent civilizations of extraterrestrial origin?
28:39Or are they the product of some higher plane of reality, hitherto unsuspected by science?
28:49Are they some kind of psychic feedback of our own unconscious?
28:57Or something else completely different?
29:01Something we have not even dreamed of?
29:05Close encounters of the second kind occur when the UFO leaves some physical evidence on the environment.
29:25During the night, two young girls saw a luminous mass gliding away from their farmhouse.
29:40The next day, the farmer discovered a circle of devastation 40 feet across in his soybean field.
29:48It had not been there the previous evening.
29:50Dr. Hynek personally investigated this case.
30:02He remarked that the leaves were hanging from each plant.
30:06They were withered, as if they had been exposed to intense heat.
30:10The stalks were not broken, however, and the ground was unmarked, indicating that the heat had come from above, with no direct contact between the object and the plants.
30:24Here we have tangible physical evidence, concrete confirmation of a sighting, which we have missed sorely until now.
30:36Sometimes the soil may appear to have been compressed beneath a weight of several tons, or baked by incredibly intense heat.
30:45Ted Phillips has collected over a thousand examples involving the physical effects left by UFOs.
30:53They include severe burns inflicted on human beings.
31:13This daylight film Polaroid photograph shows the glowing ring left by a multicolored object.
31:19After the fascinated witnesses had touched the circle, they experienced a numbness in their fingers which lasted for several days.
31:27The following day, the local sheriff was on the spot, and a second photograph was taken.
31:33The soil of the ring is dried out in spite of the recent rain, while both within and outside the ring it remains very soggy.
31:42A broken branch hangs from a tree.
31:45It is brittle, as if it had been dead for a long time.
31:49But beneath the bark, the wood is green.
31:52One month later, the snow is thawing, making the area a marshland.
31:57The ring is still dry, as delineated by the unmelted snow.
32:02Seeds refuse to grow in it, while the earth around it produces healthy grass.
32:09The electron microscope reveals icicle-shaped crystals, hitherto unknown.
32:17After five metallic dome shapes had been seen rising vertically from a field, five rings were photographed by Canadian police.
32:29Notice the clockwise rotation.
32:32UFOs have also been reported as having stalled cars and caused electrical power failures.
32:54November 2nd, 1957 was a night to remember for police officer Fowler.
33:00At 11 p.m., he answered a telephone call from Pedro Saucido, four miles out of Level Land, Texas, where he was driving a truck with Joe Salaz.
33:11They had been on Highway 116, when they saw a big flame ahead of them, a little to the right.
33:18As it approached, the engine stalled, and the truck's headlights were extinguished.
33:25Saucido further reported that when he got out to take a look, it was so hot that he threw himself on the ground.
33:34He described the UFO as a torpedo with a speed of 1,500 or 2,000 miles per hour.
33:43Officer Fowler concluded that his collar was in a state of inebriation.
33:48An hour later, the telephone rang again.
33:50A Mr. Wheeler had found himself face to face with a brightly lit egg-shaped object.
33:56Five minutes later, a car driven by Mr. Wright stalls.
34:04He gets out to take a look under the hood.
34:07Only then does he become aware that an oval shape is resting on its belly in the middle of the road, bathed in a greenish-blue glow.
34:15It seems to be made of aluminum.
34:18Terrified, Wright jumps back into the car.
34:23The object rises almost vertically and disappears in a fraction of a second.
34:32At a quarter after midnight, Jose Alvarez tells Officer Fowler that he has just come across an object sitting in the middle of the road
34:41and noticed the same physical effects on his car.
34:46Fowler is by now beginning to realize that something out of the ordinary is happening.
34:51He decides to send several police vehicles to the sector.
34:57At 12.45 a.m., another truck stalls in the face of a ball of fire, which changes color before taking off.
35:06And at a quarter after one o'clock, Sheriff Clem and his deputy observe at three or four hundred yards an oval light resembling a reddish sun.
35:16Three other patrols see the object flash across the sky.
35:21A quarter of an hour later, a last truck driver, James Long, calls Officer Fowler.
35:27In all, his log records eight distinct cases of vehicles immobilized in the presence of a UFO in a space of less than two hours.
35:40And that's not all.
35:42Reports of more sightings also came in from the surrounding district.
35:46The witnesses in the Level Land case did not know one another.
35:50The sightings they made were completely independent.
35:53What more conclusive evidence could we have for the reality of the UFO phenomenon?
35:59But the riddle remains unsolved.
36:01Exactly what does this cat and mouse game with cars mean?
36:06Burning steam emitted by a UFO left these marks on Stefan Mikulak's stomach, his gloves and clothes caught on fire.
36:17Treatment of the burns lasted 18 months.
36:20Mikulak was examined by 27 specialists, none of them able to diagnose the cause of his burns.
36:27In this lavender field in France, a close encounter of the third kind.
36:40Farmer Maurice Maas was 30 yards away from a small egg-shaped object.
36:47Two small creatures about three feet tall were standing in front of a sliding door.
36:52When one of them pointed a metallic tube at the witness, he was paralyzed.
36:57The humanoids climbed back on board the craft, which promptly disappeared.
37:01The patch of ground was left hard, like concrete.
37:17Maas could not get lavender to grow there for seven years.
37:21During this close encounter of the third kind in Canada, the grass was scorched in two places.
37:32Just before midday, the witnesses saw what they took to be a tent in their fields.
37:40It was a bright yellow dome about 25 yards across.
37:44A cube shape emerged from it, and some small creatures moved very busily and rapidly back and forth between the two.
37:53The witnesses assumed they were boy scouts and dismissed the matter from their minds.
37:57Until a neighbor told them she had seen the dome disappear into the clouds.
38:01Apparently not the local scout troop after all.
38:05Strange visitors like these have been observed by hundreds of people throughout the world.
38:14They are always humanoid in shape.
38:16Here are a few samples.
38:18Any resemblance between ourselves and creatures from outer space may seem a little hard to swallow at first.
38:38We can be sure, at least, that the organic structure of such beings must be essentially the same as our own.
38:46That is, based on the carbon atom with water as solvent.
38:51The striking similarities between humans and humanoids might also indicate the uniqueness of the DNA molecule as a genetic building block.
39:01As a general rule, they are either smaller or taller than us.
39:10Usually around four or ten feet.
39:19Thirty years ago, it was generally considered that flying saucers came from Mars.
39:26During the last century, Schiaparelli thought he had discovered canals on the surface of the planet.
39:32The mariner programs have destroyed these myths.
39:43On the other hand, a slight atmosphere and traces of water have been discovered on Mars.
39:49Recent photographs have revealed the geological features of the entire surface of our neighbor.
40:02Strange, sinuous troughs have bewildered astronomers.
40:08Only a violently coursing liquid could have dug these riverbeds.
40:12During glacial periods like the present one, the water on Mars would have frozen as polar caps.
40:19As the planet warmed up, the ice would melt again.
40:22Clouds would form to bathe the planet for thousands of years.

40:56In 1976, the Viking probe landed on Mars
41:08and was able to photograph its landscape for the first time.
41:13A remote-controlled laboratory is analyzing the soil.
41:17The results are not conclusive,
41:19but at least they have not disproved the existence of life
41:22as the zone prospected was very poor.
41:25In any case, life on Mars or Jupiter would be micro-organic.
41:31To find intelligent life, we must look outside our solar system.
41:45In November 1974, a code message was dispatched
41:50in the direction of a cluster of 300,000 stars
41:53from Arecibo in Puerto Rico,
41:56where an entire valley has been transformed
41:58into a gigantic radio wave reflector.
42:02This is part of an ambitious scientific program
42:05going under the name of CETI,
42:07or Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
42:10Professor Carl Sagan is explaining the contents
42:27of another message sent to extraterrestrials,
42:30this time via a space probe.
42:33As well as the etching of the Earthling couple,
42:36the plaque specifies the position of our solar system
42:39in the Milky Way.
42:44Will this message ever be read in outer space?
42:48It will take Pioneer 10 billion years
42:52to reach the constellations of Ursa Major and Orion.
42:55NASA also has plans for vast and expensive programs,
43:11like the setting up of radio telescopes on the moon,
43:15where there is no atmosphere to disturb messages
43:18from other corners of the universe.
43:20How ironic it would be, though,
43:27if it should prove that the proof
43:29of extraterrestrial intelligence
43:31has been under our noses all the time,
43:33while we continue to spend our time and energy
43:37searching for it elsewhere.
43:38Soon, we shall be out there in the galaxy.
43:51Space colonies may be in existence
43:53in less than a hundred years' time.
43:57Gerard O'Neill, a physicist from Princeton,
44:01conceived this wheel to accommodate 10,000 people.
44:04One revolution per minute
44:08creates an artificial gravity field.
44:25NASA proposes enormous power stations
44:28to gather solar energy.
44:30The materials for the colony
44:38will be quarried on the moon
44:39because of the weak lunar gravity.
44:41NASA proposes nuclear gravity
44:43Perhaps UFOs themselves are on missions
45:08from similar space colonies.
45:11Permanent artificial planets
45:13passing close to Earth
45:14and sending off scouts,
45:16explorers,
45:17tourists maybe.
45:18We would surely be as curious to them
45:21as they are to us.
45:23And in fact,
45:24cases do exist
45:25where communication has been established
45:27with occupants of UFOs.
45:34A close encounter of the third kind
45:36in New Guinea.
45:37Father Gill, a meticulous man,
45:39made notes.
45:40Here are some extracts
45:41from his vivid minute-by-minute account
45:43of what occurred.
45:526.55 p.m.
45:53Something moving on top.
45:55A man?
45:56Now three beings moving.
45:58Luminous.
45:58Busy on the bridge.
46:00Craft leaves.
46:017.10 p.m.
46:04Men.
46:077.04.
46:08One, then two again.
46:117.10 p.m.
46:12Men appear.
46:13Also a shaft of blue light.
46:15The men gone.
46:16The projector's still there.
46:207.20 p.m.
46:22Projector turned off.
46:23Men gone.
46:24UFO passes through a cloud.
46:258.28 p.m.
46:29Sky above lit up.
46:31Big cloud over Dagora.
46:32I saw the UFO high up
46:34and called the station people.
46:41The entire village
46:42and all 36 people
46:43was about to witness
46:44an extraordinary sequence of events.
46:48Second UFO gliding over the sea.
46:50Another over Wadobuna village.
46:57New cloud formation.
46:58Big stationary UFO.
47:00Others coming and going
47:01in the clouds.
47:119.05 p.m.
47:12Cloud formation.
47:13Numbers 2, 3, 4 gone.
47:1710 p.m.
47:18Still stationary.
47:2010.10 p.m.
47:22Craft gone again.
47:33The UFO comes back again
47:36and disappears behind the clouds.
47:38Later, a sharp explosion is heard.
47:45The next day,
47:46the thing came down very low.
47:48The craft, still bright,
47:50was clear closer.
47:52There were silhouettes on the bridge.
47:54The teacher said to me,
47:55I wonder if it's going to land
47:57on the sports field.
47:58I replied,
47:59why not?
48:01Eric and another boy
48:02waved their arms.
48:03And the silhouettes
48:05waved back.
48:06With the story of Betty and Barney Hill,
48:19we are on the threshold
48:20of a mind-shattering possibility.
48:23Direct contact with alien beings.
48:28Late at night,
48:30on their way home
48:31from a holiday in Canada,
48:32the hills see a strange light
48:34in the sky,
48:36as sketched here
48:37by Betty Hill.
48:38On the same night,
48:39in the same area,
48:41the phenomenon
48:41is spotted by radar.
48:44It chases their car
48:45and finally lands
48:46in front of them.
48:48Through his binoculars,
48:49Barney can see creatures.
48:51One of them
48:52looks at him fixedly.
48:53Then,
48:57everything goes hazy
48:58in their memory.
48:59Later,
49:00they come to their senses
49:01driving towards Portsmouth.
49:05Home again,
49:06they realize
49:07that their trip
49:07has lasted
49:08two hours more
49:10than foreseen.
49:11For several months,
49:12they will experience
49:13physical and mental problems
49:15and decide
49:16to consult
49:16Dr. Simon of Boston,
49:18renowned for his
49:19cures of amnesiacs.
49:23The hills
49:27are hypnotized separately.
49:30Neither knows
49:30what the other
49:31has revealed
49:32to the doctor.
49:33Yet,
49:33the two accounts
49:34concur perfectly.
49:38According to
49:39the hills' testimony
49:40under hypnosis,
49:41the craft
49:42landed on the highway.
49:44Creatures
49:45got out of it
49:45and led
49:46Betty and Barney
49:47on board.
49:51Here it is
49:52in cross-section.
49:53They underwent
49:55separate medical
49:56examinations.
49:57Skin,
49:58fingernail,
49:58and hair samples
49:59were taken.
50:04This sketch
50:05drawn under hypnosis
50:07shows one
50:08of the occupants.
50:09The creatures
50:10were smallish
50:11and communicated
50:12by telepathy.
50:13Their eyes
50:14were striking,
50:15very large,
50:16and stretching
50:16towards the temples.
50:20Betty asked the leader
50:22where they came from.
50:23He then showed her
50:25a three-dimensional
50:26space chart,
50:27which Betty
50:27was able to reproduce
50:28when requested
50:29to do so
50:30by Dr. Simon.
50:32The leader explained
50:33that the multiple lines
50:34represented busy routes
50:36from one star
50:36to another,
50:37the single lines
50:38were used less frequently,
50:40and the dotted lines
50:41indicated exploratory routes.
50:43A young teacher
50:45from Ohio,
50:46Marjorie Fish,
50:47had the brilliant idea
50:49of considering
50:49this star map
50:50from the point of view
50:52of the visitor's base
50:53in the lower right-hand corner.
51:00Armed with a supply
51:01of wooden beads,
51:02she began to construct
51:03three-dimensional models
51:05of the universe,
51:06representing stellar systems
51:07within a radius
51:09of 50 light-years.
51:17Marjorie Fish
51:18chose only
51:19those stars
51:20liable to sustain life.
51:22The scale
51:23of star classification
51:24goes from the blue
51:25and mauve stars
51:26to the red giants
51:28and supergiants.
51:29The excessive cold
51:31or heat
51:31of these extremes
51:32of the scale
51:33would prohibit
51:34any form
51:35of carbon-based life
51:36developing
51:37on their planets.
51:48A yellow star,
51:50like our sun,
51:51has a core
51:51about a million miles
51:53in diameter,
51:54dense enough
51:55to provoke
51:55nuclear combustion,
51:57with a temperature
51:58reaching 9 million
51:59degrees centigrade.
52:16Marjorie Fish
52:17ended up
52:18with 46 yellow suns.
52:21Here are those
52:22which are visible
52:22from the southern hemisphere.
52:24from 1968
52:29to 1973,
52:31she patiently
52:31constructed
52:32several models
52:33of our stellar
52:34neighborhood.
52:42Using data
52:43from the Gleese catalog,
52:44the most up-to-date
52:45astronomical map,
52:47a computer
52:48can reproduce
52:48exactly that area
52:50of the Milky Way
52:51coinciding
52:52with Betty's sketch.
52:53Even an astronomer
52:58could not have drawn
52:59Betty's map
53:00when she did it
53:01for Dr. Simon,
53:02as this area
53:03of space
53:04had not been
53:05carefully charted then.
53:07So where did
53:08those visitors
53:08come from?
53:10From a system
53:11of twin stars,
53:12Zeta 1
53:13and Zeta 2
53:14and Zeta 2
53:14in the reticular
53:16constellation
53:1625 light years
53:18from our sun.
53:20All the other stars
53:21on the map
53:22are capable
53:23of sustaining life
53:24on their planets.
53:26Statistically,
53:27the chances
53:28of Betty Hill's map
53:30attaining this accuracy
53:31by pure chance
53:32are 1 out of 10,000.
53:35The routes
53:36followed by
53:37Zeta inhabitants
53:38appear logical
53:39and practical.
53:48Betty's map
53:49offers some
53:49astonishing evidence.
53:51For the first time,
53:53science has been
53:53able to confirm
53:54the authenticity
53:55of information
53:56received by an
53:58eyewitness
53:58from extraterrestrials.
54:01How could they
54:05have traveled
54:05from there
54:06to here?
54:0725 light years
54:09at the speed of light
54:10means a round trip
54:11of 50 years.
54:13According to
54:14Einstein,
54:15by the time
54:16they returned
54:16to Zeta reticuli,
54:18the alien astronauts
54:20would not recognize
54:21their own world.
54:22It would have aged
54:23by several hundred years.
54:29Black holes
54:31could be the key
54:32to the enigma.
54:33Astronomers say
54:35anything might be possible
54:36inside or through
54:38a black hole.
54:39What are they?
54:41Nearly a star
54:42at the moment
54:43of its death.
54:44A huge collapsing
54:46of its entire mass
54:47and energy,
54:48creating a gravitational
54:50field of inconceivable
54:52magnitude.
54:59Black holes are monsters
55:01on a cosmic scale.
55:03Even their own light
55:04is swallowed up.
55:05other neighboring stars
55:18disappear into
55:19the bottomless pit.
55:27Where does all this matter
55:29disappear to?
55:30At what speed?
55:31Black holes might very well
55:41be space tunnels,
55:43shortcuts in space
55:44that a highly advanced
55:45civilization has learned
55:47to utilize to span
55:49not only a few light years,
55:51but billions.
55:53Maybe it is easier
55:54to travel to Earth
55:55from the ends
55:56of the universe
55:56than from the nearest stars.
55:58Maybe Betty Hill's map
56:01can lead us
56:01to another galaxy.
56:03Maybe.
56:13We do not yet hold
56:14the key to the mystery
56:15in our grasp.
56:17For all we know,
56:18the UFO phenomenon
56:20is simply a tactic
56:21designed to accustom
56:22us human beings
56:23to the idea
56:25of contact
56:26with extraterrestrial beings.
