At a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing last week, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) questioned Gen. Eric Smith about the threat of Iran to the United States.
Transcript
00:00Senator Kennery, and then Senator Murray, and then Senator Moran.
00:13General, is the theocracy in Iran an enemy of the American people
00:25and all people who refuse to adopt the theocracy's radical version of Islam?
00:36Senator, I'm not a scholar in that regard,
00:39but I would say that Iran presents a clear and present danger to all those who do not bend their world.
00:44Well, do you think they're our friend?
00:45They are not our friend.
00:48And how long have they not been our friend and the world's friend?
00:52For many decades, sir.
00:56How many innocent people has the theocracy in Iran killed
01:02because they refused to adopt the theocracy's radical version of Islam?
01:08I don't have a number, but it's in the thousands.
01:11Tens of thousands, right?
01:13I would think so, yes, sir.
01:14Hundreds of thousands, right?
01:16Again, I don't have the exact number, but I would not be surprised if it were.
01:19If the theocracy in Iran developed a nuclear weapon, would they be more or less dangerous?
01:34No, they would be far more dangerous, Senator.
01:36There's a saying, if your neighbor says he's going to kill you, you should believe him.
01:40Can we agree that the president's decision to destroy the Iranian theocracy's nuclear weapon capabilities
01:53made the world safer?
01:55I would say it did.
02:00What's impetuous mean?
02:04Well, sir, impetuous means, again, I'm a poli-sci major from the Texas State School.
02:13Impetuous means flipping.
02:16Without thought, without care.
02:18You're not a politician, are you?
02:25No, sir, I am not.
02:26Okay.
02:27One of my friends on the committee said that America's decision to destroy the Iranian theocracy's
02:36ability to make a nuclear bomb was impetuous.
02:41Do you think that's an accurate description in light of the autocracy's years of hatred and
02:51bloodshed?
02:52Well, Senator, I would say it is a good thing that Iran does not have a nuclear weapon.
02:56Yeah, I would do.
02:57I don't understand why we can't agree on that.
