With the government reviewing parental leave and pay, we ask people in Birmingham how much time off they think new dads should get when a baby is born—and why it matters for modern families.

00:02It should be the same as parents.

00:04The government keeps talking about

00:06lone families and keeping

00:08that family unit together.

00:10It starts by giving everyone the same

00:12matter please. Each parent has the exact

00:14same time with the child. It's about

00:16those first steps, isn't it?

00:18Clearly mum has carried the child

00:20or the person has carried the child but the other parent

00:22also deserves to see those milestones.

00:24They're changing that piece to have the late nights.

00:26It's not fair that they're going to work and mum is still at home.

00:28I've literally been given at least a month

00:30because like when I had my

00:32first kid I was only 16 so I was alright

00:34but I know from experience that

00:36even two weeks ain't really enough.

00:38And obviously a month gives you

00:40a solid enough time compared to the mum's nine

00:42to at least bond with the baby.

00:44I think as much as

00:46a wife actually.

00:48I think so anyway.

00:50As much as a wife. So you can spend more time with

00:52the family and also

00:54have time to bond

00:56bond with the child as well.

00:58As much as the mother does in my opinion.
