00:00A close call. A moment of danger when life can hang in the balance.
00:05It was absolute panic and fear.
00:08A split second where the outcome could go either way.
00:11They'd have been lucky if they'd have stayed conscious.
00:13The difference between disaster and survival.
00:16It's literally, that's all it takes.
00:20These are the people that have been there and lived to tell the tale.
00:24I was terrified. I thought I was going to die.
00:27It's a day they'll never forget.
00:29The day they had a close call.
00:46Today on Close Calls.
00:50A mum phones her husband as she battles to save their two young sons from a car fire.
00:55All I could hear down the phone was her screaming.
00:58I was on the opposite side of the carriageway.
01:00So as I drove past I could actually see the whole front of the car was engulfed.
01:05When he gets closer, this is what he sees.
01:09My first instinct was because all I could hear was the car horn going that she was still in the car.
01:13First thought was that I lost them all.
01:16My heart just sank because I thought that I'd lost everything.
01:19And two friends are spending a day at a BMX track when disaster strikes.
01:28The injured rider struggles to his feet.
01:33You're very funny colour.
01:35But then collapses.
01:37It literally went white and green.
01:40It's gone. It's gone.
01:41A young mum driving her two young sons to the shops notices smoke in the footwell of her car.
01:49She's on a busy road with nowhere to stop.
01:52There's lorries barrelling past.
01:54And I'm thinking, I've got to pull over and I think the car's just going to blow up while I'm driving it.
02:01Seconds later, with flames now visible, she pulls into a bus stop and grabs three-year-old son Braden from the back seat.
02:08But one-year-old Bradley is buckled into the child seat alongside and she can't undo the straps.
02:15And I think, right, I'm going to either save him or I'm going to die trying because I ain't leaving him.
02:20MUSIC
02:29Mum of two Melissa was born and bred in Walsall.
02:34She spent a few years away from home studying for a degree in chemistry at Keele University.
02:40And that's where she met her husband Jamie.
02:42The pair were working in security at the Students' Union.
02:46When you just look at him, I found him terrifying.
02:50And he was so bossy and so mean to me and he never smiled.
02:54I was actually her supervisor at the time.
02:57And it was just, we had a lot in common and we both liked the same things.
03:01I found out he wasn't that scary. He's actually quite a nice person.
03:05I found her a laugh and she found me a laugh.
03:07So then I think after a while, I just naturally started to grow this attraction.
03:12The couple have been together now for eight years and married for one.
03:16I'm a kind and caring person.
03:19The couple are now mum and dad to three-year-old Brayden and one-year-old Bradley.
03:24And the family is completed by one-year-old Labrador pup Marshall.
03:29I do really enjoy being a mum.
03:31I got all this degree and everything, but then I got pregnant and I can't imagine my life any other way.
03:37The birth of their first child was a life-changing experience for Jamie too.
03:43Going from being very carefree and being able to do whatever I want to them, this child was everything in my life.
03:52Jamie works in commercial banking in Wolverhampton and does the short commute by car.
03:58Melissa has her own vehicle for ferrying the boys around.
04:01I've had my licence for about six years and I got my car the same month as well.
04:06I couldn't wait to get a car.
04:08I tend to drive everywhere.
04:10I do like driving. I've always liked driving.
04:14But an everyday trip to the shops changes all that and nearly ends in tragedy for the family.
04:25It's late November and Melissa's car is due for its MOT and annual service.
04:31I did a kind of once-over beforehand and then did a once-over when the car came back.
04:37The following day is Black Friday.
04:39Melissa and her mum have bags and bargains in the sale which need to be collected.
04:44So we made the decision to go in two separate cars.
04:47Then I can take the largest things and she would have the children in her car.
04:51They set off after Jamie finishes work at 5.30.
04:55Both boys are in Melissa's car.
04:57Brayden sitting facing forward behind Melissa
04:59and little Bradley in his rear-facing car seat next to him.
05:04They love travelling in the car.
05:06I've seen all the cars and everything out the window.
05:09When we left here it was pretty dark,
05:11dark enough that we needed the headlights to go down the road
05:13and all the streetlights were on as well.
05:15They drive in convoy with Jamie in front.
05:18I remember it being really cold
05:21so I knew the windscreen was going to start fogging up
05:24so I put the de-mister on full.
05:26But the heater doesn't come on and the windscreen starts to mist up.
05:31I turned it off, turned it on and then it still wasn't coming on.
05:34She uses her hands-free phone to call Jamie.
05:37I just said the heating's not coming on
05:39and his first response always, turn it off and turn it on.
05:43And I was like, I did, it's not coming on.
05:45He went, I'll meet you back at home and I'll have a look.
05:48At the next roundabout, they abandoned their trip
05:51and turned back the way they came, with Jamie still ahead.
05:55I still had my heating on full
05:57because I'm hoping maybe it'll kick in.
05:59I don't know what's wrong with it.
06:01And then all of a sudden, like, black smoke
06:04started to come out the vents just under my windscreen.
06:07Naturally, I turned the heating off
06:10but also I'm in a carriageway and there is nowhere to pull over.
06:15Melissa has kept the line open to Jamie.
06:18And then she said that she was finding it hard to see
06:20because of how much smoke there was,
06:22so there was something wrong with the car.
06:24Then Melissa spots a fire in the passenger footwell.
06:28I'm aware that I'm driving about 40 miles an hour down the road.
06:33There's lorries barrelling past.
06:35So I've got my hands on the wheel
06:37and I'm thinking, I've got to pull over
06:38and I think the car's just going to blow up while I'm driving it.
06:42We were still on the phone together.
06:44She was in hysterics because she was panicking.
06:46So the car's on fire, car's on fire.
06:49I was trying to get her to call 999.
06:52Jamie was shouting at me,
06:53but I couldn't properly hear what he was saying
06:56because I wasn't stopping screaming.
06:58So I immediately said I was coming back to her.
07:01Gripped with fear, Jamie turns around
07:03and heads back to find his wife and children.
07:06Melissa is still driving down the dual carriageway.
07:10I can't stop because there's cars behind me.
07:12It's for a shower.
07:13I'll just cause a big crash.
07:15But she can't keep going either.
07:18Then she sees a bus stop and pulls in.
07:20I was seeing the fire spreading
07:23and so I grabbed my phone and keys.
07:26I remembered to turn the car off
07:28and get the child locked
07:30because the door's locked because of the kid.
07:32She scrambles out of the car
07:33and yanks open the door behind to reach Brayden.
07:36I managed to pull him out straight away.
07:39There's still lorries going past me.
07:42But he's not aware of traffic.
07:45I shout at him,
07:46don't go in the road, don't go in the road.
07:47But then all that time I'm aware
07:49that the fire was actually on Bradley's side of the car
07:52spreading up.
07:54It's only inches from Bradley
07:56who's to the other side of the vehicle.
07:59And the fire had spread over
08:01to where I would have been sitting, the driver's side.
08:03It took the horn of the car
08:05so the horn started blaring.
08:07I just see cars explode in movies
08:10so I'm thinking this car's going to explode.
08:13Panic-stricken, she reaches for her one-year-old son
08:16but struggles with a tight-fitting safety belt
08:18securing him.
08:20I was breathing in smoke
08:22so I started coughing.
08:24There wasn't anyone coming to help me.
08:26I look at Brayden
08:27and he's terrified
08:28and he's quiet.
08:30I pick him up and I throw him away from me.
08:32I think I shouted like,
08:34stay there or don't move
08:35to scare him into not moving.
08:37And then I turned to Bradley
08:38and I think, right,
08:40I'm going to either save him
08:41or I am going to die trying
08:43because I ain't leaving him.
08:45Later,
08:47Jamie's dash cam records the scene
08:49as he arrives,
08:50desperate to find his family.
08:52First thing I saw was
08:53the back doors were open.
08:56My mind,
08:57someone's taken the kids out
08:58but she's still in the car.
08:59The front seats were on fire.
09:01The National Cycling Centre,
09:11Manchester.
09:13A day out for two friends
09:15in the BMX arena
09:16ends in disaster
09:17when one of them
09:19misjudges a jump.
09:21It looked really bad.
09:25You could see his body
09:26shudder as it hit the floor.
09:27Other riders and staff
09:31rush to help.
09:32His friend fears the worst.
09:34Going through my mind
09:35was like straight away
09:37a spinal injury.
09:48Action sports photographer Rob
09:50lives in Wigan
09:50in Greater Manchester
09:51but his work
09:53and active lifestyle
09:54have taken him far and wide.
09:56I do a lot of mountain biking,
09:58skiing, climbing.
09:59I absolutely love what I do.
10:01I've seen so much,
10:01I've been everywhere,
10:02I've done loads of things.
10:04I suppose I really value life
10:05and that's why I love
10:06being out all the time.
10:08The downside to all the thrill...
10:10It's 30 metre falls.
10:12Rob's wife Sam
10:13shares his love of outdoor sports
10:15and even inspired
10:16his most recent passion.
10:19It's only in the last couple of years
10:20I've really got into mountain biking.
10:21But Sam didn't quite foresee the result.
10:24Since I've started mountain biking
10:25I was just throwing a simple trick
10:27and put my foot down
10:28and that broke my ankle
10:30and I collided with a tree
10:31which separated my shoulder
10:33from my clavicle
10:34so I've got a bit of a dropped shoulder
10:35there as you can see.
10:37I managed to impel myself on a tree
10:39so I had like 40 something stitches
10:40to stitch it back up to the top there.
10:42But none of it's put injury prone Rob
10:44off the sport.
10:46As I've got better
10:47you can just hurtle down a mountain
10:48so fast.
10:49I think if you're going to be a mountain biker
10:50you've definitely got to be
10:51somewhat fearless.
10:53Rob's mate Alex
10:54is a good example of that.
10:56Based in Scotland
10:57he's raced mountain bikes
10:58professionally
10:59all over the world
11:00and earns a living
11:01through his own
11:02biking YouTube channel.
11:05I've known Rob now
11:06for about three years or so
11:08and obviously
11:09as content creators
11:10ourselves
11:11we're always looking
11:12for people to work with
11:13and people to go
11:14mountain biking with
11:15so we kind of became
11:16friends through that.
11:18Rob's a fairly skilled bike rider.
11:19He doesn't do as much racing
11:20as I do.
11:22And there's a reason for that.
11:23I've only ever done
11:24two races in my life.
11:25One of them
11:26I crashed somewhere
11:27down towards the end
11:28and nearly died.
11:30My second race
11:31I got food poisoning
11:32from my breakfast
11:33in the morning
11:34and I was like
11:34vomiting in my helmet
11:36as I was going down the track.
11:38He likes putting himself
11:40in the deep end
11:41and he generally likes
11:43to have a good laugh
11:43like he's always
11:44a good laugh to have around.
11:45But when the boys
11:47opt to try a different
11:49style of riding
11:50on a fun day out
11:51Rob takes his
11:52most serious tumble yet
11:54leaving him
11:55in all sorts of trouble.
11:58It's February
11:59and bad weather
12:00is sweeping the country.
12:01Alex is visiting
12:02his parents in Manchester
12:04when Rob suggests
12:05an outing.
12:07That morning
12:08Rob actually sent me
12:10a text
12:10just basically asking me
12:12have you got any
12:12free time today
12:13and do something cool
12:14do you want to come along?
12:14I thought going to the BMX track
12:16would be a good shot.
12:18It was really grainy
12:19outside and windy
12:20so having a roof
12:21over your head
12:22is quite nice.
12:22I was like
12:23yeah let's give this a bash.
12:25I've not been to
12:26the BMX track before.
12:28Got a few bikes
12:29organised for him
12:30because he didn't have
12:30any bikes with him
12:31for the track.
12:32And I just thought
12:33yeah just take the bull
12:34by both horns
12:34and go and give it a go.
12:37Sprinting over
12:38a short man-made track
12:40and have smaller wheels
12:41a strong rigid frame
12:42and no suspension.
12:45Alex decides to film
12:46the experience
12:47for his channel.
12:48Completely different
12:48video today.
12:49We have been
12:50we're at the
12:52Manchester Velodrome
12:53and we're not here
12:54to do track cycling
12:56we're here at the
12:57National Cycling Centre
12:58to ride the BMX track.
12:59I think it's Britain's
13:00biggest or maybe
13:01only indoor BMX track.
13:03I've never been here
13:04it looks very intimidating
13:05it's Olympic level
13:06I'm pretty nervous
13:07I've not ridden a
13:09hardtail or a jump bike
13:10for years
13:11this is going to be
13:12very interesting.
13:14Rob was into BMX bikes
13:16when he was younger
13:17so he's in the
13:18unusual position
13:18of having more
13:19experience than Alex.
13:21My dad used to be
13:23you know
13:23a really good road cyclist
13:25I asked my dad
13:26for a bike
13:26for Christmas
13:27a BMX bike
13:27so as a kid
13:28I was locally drawn
13:29and then from about
13:3017
13:31I was you know
13:32hittling
13:33on that every day
13:35of the week
13:35here's the steed
13:36I don't even know
13:39what this is
13:39I've only been to
13:40that track
13:41once before
13:42and that was
13:43probably three weeks
13:45prior to meeting Alex
13:46at the track there
13:47this is Rob
13:48and Rob's managed
13:49to source the bike
13:50off a friend of his
13:51I felt pretty
13:53you know
13:53pretty confident
13:54on the track
13:55I wasn't going to be
13:55surprised when I came
13:56to ride there
13:57oh wow
13:57there's the
13:58that was the baby
13:59start ramp
13:59and then the big
14:00start ramp
14:01I'm actually quite
14:02nervous
14:02yeah me too
14:04it's a climb
14:06just to get
14:07to the starting
14:07ramp
14:08and very different
14:10from what they're
14:11used to
14:12oh my god
14:12this bike is small
14:13the pair decide
14:15to take it easy
14:16on their first run
14:17the tracks are
14:19designed to go
14:19really fast
14:20you need to clear
14:20all the jumps
14:21and there's not
14:22room for much
14:24error
14:24oh these berms
14:25are big
14:25I was terrified
14:27I'm being
14:30completely honest
14:30I was absolutely
14:31terrified
14:32the place
14:35is like concrete
14:36because the harder
14:37the surface you have
14:38the faster the tyres
14:39are able to roll
14:40oh my
14:41take a few hours
14:42to get used to
14:42like I just knew
14:43that if I made a mistake
14:44tried to go for a jump
14:46but didn't quite make it
14:47the consequences
14:48could be pretty bad
14:49wow that's intimidating
14:52the friends decide
14:53to try a few circuits
14:55as a warm-up
14:55and
14:57after a few
14:58minor mishaps
14:59did you see that
15:00jumped in
15:01their confidence
15:02builds and they
15:03head back up
15:04the ramp
15:05with Alex still
15:06filming from his
15:06head cam
15:07should you do a gate
15:08start
15:08you want to do a gate
15:09start
15:10yeah
15:10I've never done one
15:11I've never done one
15:12the gate is a scary
15:14thing to tackle
15:15it must be about
15:1710 metres in elevation
15:18or higher
15:19so yeah
15:19as soon as that
15:20that gate drops
15:21you're coming down
15:22that ramp with some speed
15:23so the first jump
15:24yeah
15:24hits you fast
15:25wow
15:26he was looking
15:28fairly comfortable
15:29fairly confident
15:30I was like
15:31he's doing really well
15:32oh my
15:33I didn't have any
15:34concerns that
15:35you know
15:35I'd be crashing
15:36on these things
15:37I felt
15:37you know
15:38in my comfort zone
15:39but seconds later
15:41he isn't
15:42Rob badly misjudges
15:44a jump
15:45oh
15:48oh
15:51Rob launches
15:54into the air
15:54and loses control
15:56his centre of gravity
15:57is too far back
15:59he lands on his
16:00back wheel
16:00and tips backwards
16:02at speed
16:03slamming his lower
16:04back into the hard
16:05unforgiving track
16:06Alex has to swerve
16:08to avoid him
16:09I was literally
16:11thinking oh
16:11this isn't good
16:12like the way
16:13he landed
16:13and like
16:14you could see
16:15his body shudder
16:15as it hit the floor
16:16and his helmet
16:17hit the floor
16:18it looked really bad
16:19oh
16:21my back
16:21later
16:23Rob appears
16:25to recover
16:26but
16:27it literally went
16:30white
16:30and green
16:31then he collapses
16:33it's gone
16:35it's gone
16:35in Walsall
16:46mum Melissa
16:47is struggling
16:48to free her
16:48one-year-old son
16:49Bradley
16:50from his car seat
16:51as flames
16:52consume the front
16:53of her vehicle
16:54her other child
16:55three-year-old
16:56Braden
16:56is waiting
16:57at the side
16:58of a busy
16:58dual carriageway
16:59and I think
17:00right
17:00I'm going to
17:01either save him
17:02or I'm going to
17:03die trying
17:04because I ain't
17:05leaving him
17:05powerless to help
17:07her
17:07husband Jamie
17:08can hear the
17:09entire drama
17:10on his phone
17:11all I could hear
17:12down the phone
17:12was her screaming
17:13I was on the
17:15opposite side
17:16of the carriageway
17:16so as I
17:17drove past
17:18I could actually
17:18see the car
17:19the whole front
17:20of the car
17:21was engulfed
17:23but he can't
17:24see Melissa
17:24on the other
17:25side of the
17:26vehicle
17:26still unable
17:28to free
17:28the belt
17:29buckles
17:29she opts
17:30for brute
17:30force
17:31and I just
17:32wrench him
17:33I didn't break
17:34his arms
17:35I don't know
17:35how
17:36but I managed
17:37to get him
17:37out
17:37fearing the car
17:39could explode
17:40she scoops
17:40up both boys
17:41in a bid
17:42to put distance
17:43between them
17:43and the burning
17:44car
17:45and then at
17:46that moment
17:47it felt like
17:48the car just
17:49went up
17:50but looking back
17:50the tyres blew
17:52and the windscreen
17:53and went
17:55just past the bus
17:56stop she sees
17:57a couple peering
17:58through the window
17:58of their home
17:59and then they
18:01came round
18:01and came out
18:02and they were
18:02absolutely lovely
18:03to me
18:04the homeowners
18:05usher her
18:06into their garden
18:07seconds later
18:08Jamie pulls up
18:09my first instinct
18:11was because all I
18:11could hear was
18:12the car horn
18:12going that she
18:13was still
18:13in the car
18:14first thought
18:15was that I
18:15lost them all
18:16my heart
18:17just sank
18:18because I
18:18thought that
18:19I'd lost
18:19everything
18:20because without
18:22the kids
18:22I've got nothing
18:23really
18:24fearful
18:25he approaches
18:26the inferno
18:27the back doors
18:29were open
18:29which I couldn't
18:30see the kids
18:31so my
18:32my mind
18:32someone's taking
18:33the kids out
18:33but she's still
18:34in the car
18:34the front seats
18:35were on fire
18:36so I panic
18:37and tried to open
18:38the car door
18:39at which point
18:40I couldn't
18:40because the car
18:41was locked
18:41so then I
18:43started punching
18:44the window
18:45to break the window
18:46out of sight
18:47in the couple's
18:48garden
18:48Melissa is calling
18:49999
18:50hello fire service
18:51I'm calling the fire
18:53okay
18:54and where are you
18:55please
18:55they kept telling
18:57me they can't
18:58help me unless
18:58I tell them
18:59where I am
19:00and then I
19:01calm down
19:01and I tell
19:02them the address
19:03so what area
19:06are you in
19:06are you in
19:07Birmingham
19:07are you in
19:08where are you
19:09Warsaw
19:10yeah
19:12okay listen
19:13I've got somebody
19:14come in
19:14just stay
19:15away from the
19:16vehicle
19:16okay
19:17firefighter
19:18Aidan Basterfield
19:19is one of the
19:20West Midlands
19:20team who respond
19:21to the call
19:22Aldridge fire
19:23station is just
19:24seven minutes
19:25away
19:25but it's rush
19:27hour
19:27traffic on the
19:28roads would have
19:29been more than
19:30usual with people
19:31finishing work
19:31and we approached
19:33on the opposite
19:33side of the dual
19:34carriageway to
19:34where the fire
19:35was
19:35I do remember
19:36the whole car
19:37was on fire
19:38quite large flames
19:39for a car fire
19:40at the scene
19:41Jamie suddenly
19:42spots Melissa
19:43taking refuge
19:44in the nearby
19:45garden
19:45it was like
19:47biggest weight
19:48off my back
19:49the fact that
19:49she managed to
19:51get out
19:51Melissa urges
19:53him to move
19:53his car away
19:54from her
19:55burning vehicle
19:56as he reverses
19:57his dashboard
19:58camera begins
19:59to record
20:00as I actually
20:01walked away
20:02from the car
20:02while the windows
20:03then burst
20:04because of the
20:05heat from the
20:05fire
20:05he's relieved
20:08to be reunited
20:08with the boys
20:09safe in the
20:10neighbor's house
20:11I went in
20:13to check on the
20:13kids to make
20:14sure they were
20:14both okay
20:15the homeowner
20:17abandons an
20:18attempt to put
20:19out the flames
20:19with a small
20:20extinguisher
20:21and Jamie
20:22photographs the
20:23car
20:23its front end
20:24well alight
20:25seconds later
20:28the fire service
20:29arrived
20:29it's quickly
20:30established
20:30there wasn't
20:31anybody within
20:31this vehicle
20:32so it was
20:33just myself
20:34wearing breathing
20:35apparatus
20:36using a
20:37hose reel
20:37jet from the
20:38truck
20:39to apply water
20:39to the car
20:40one of the
20:41crew checks
20:42Melissa and
20:42the boys
20:43for smoke
20:43inhalation
20:44and burns
20:45they gave me
20:47some oxygen
20:48because of the
20:48smoke
20:49both
20:50Brandon
20:50and Bradley
20:51were completely
20:52uninjured
20:53which I'm so
20:54thankful for
20:55Aidan and his
20:56colleagues quickly
20:57extinguished the fire
20:58there seemed to be
21:00a trail of fuel
21:01along the kerbside
21:02which was on fire
21:03so I assume the fuel
21:04lines had burnt
21:05through on this
21:05vehicle
21:06we applied
21:07a lot of water
21:09to this car
21:10and actually
21:11resorted in using
21:12an extinguisher
21:13to completely
21:15finish the job
21:15Melissa and
21:16Jamie thank the
21:17couple who came
21:18to her aid
21:19and head home
21:20with the boys
21:21in Jamie's car
21:22it was such a
21:23surreal thing
21:24to then drive
21:24past the shell
21:25of my car
21:26I couldn't even
21:27look at the car
21:27I just
21:28looked straight on
21:30next day
21:32Melissa goes back
21:33and takes these
21:34photographs
21:35the car's
21:36interior
21:36is burned out
21:38the fire
21:39has had a
21:40lasting effect
21:41on both
21:41Melissa
21:42and Jamie
21:43I think
21:44I'm a lot
21:45more appreciative
21:46of everything
21:47I have
21:47just to think
21:49that in that
21:50short moment
21:51of time
21:51I could have
21:52lost my
21:53entire family
21:53I still drive
21:55but I don't
21:56drive like I
21:57used to
21:57I can't drive
21:58on the motorway
21:59and I've realised
22:00I can't drive
22:01anywhere that
22:02I can't pull over
22:03they both know
22:04Melissa and the
22:05boys had a
22:06lucky escape
22:07it haunts me
22:08to this day
22:09how close
22:09of a call
22:10that we nearly
22:12died
22:12very lucky
22:13to have that
22:14lay by close
22:15by to pull
22:16into
22:16to have got
22:17out as
22:17quick as
22:17she has
22:17the family
22:19is very
22:19grateful to
22:20everyone
22:20who helped
22:21them that
22:21day
22:22I owe
22:23so much
22:24to the fire
22:24crew
22:24but the
22:25people that
22:25took my
22:26children in
22:27I owe
22:27so much
22:28to them
22:28because
22:29I just
22:30turned up
22:31on their
22:31doorstep
22:32screaming
22:32and I
22:33just owe
22:34massive
22:34thanks to
22:35them
22:36mountain
22:45bike
22:45enthusiast
22:46Rob and
22:47Alex were
22:47enjoying a
22:48day out
22:48on the
22:49BMX track
22:50after bad
22:51weather put
22:51paid to
22:52their usual
22:52outdoor
22:53pursuit
22:53but the
22:54fun came
22:55to an
22:55abrupt
22:56halt
22:56when Rob
22:57mistimed
22:57a jump
22:58crash
22:59landed
22:59and slammed
23:01onto his
23:02back on the
23:02concrete track
23:03and I knew
23:04instantly that
23:05I'd done
23:05something
23:06going through
23:11my mind
23:11was like
23:12straight away
23:13spinal injury
23:14staff and other
23:16riders gather
23:16round
23:17everyone was
23:18telling him
23:18not to move
23:19let's get
23:20some medical
23:21assistance over
23:21here before
23:21you do
23:22anything
23:22stay on the
23:22safe side
23:23and he was
23:24adamant that
23:25he wanted to
23:25get up
23:25I was in so
23:26much pain
23:26and I was
23:26rolling around
23:27on the floor
23:27and I knew
23:28I was meant to
23:28be staying
23:29still
23:29but it was
23:30that painful
23:31I couldn't
23:31lie still
23:32it's worse
23:33than previous
23:34injuries
23:35I knew I
23:36probably should
23:37have asked
23:37for an
23:38ambulance
23:38there and
23:38then
23:39but maybe
23:41the shock
23:41of the
23:42injury
23:42told me
23:43to try
23:43and walk
23:44it off
23:44which is
23:44the worst
23:45thing I
23:45could have
23:45done at
23:45the time
23:46really
23:46so I
23:47ended up
23:47getting up
23:48it wasn't
23:51until he
23:52got up
23:52that all
23:53the colour
23:54just drained
23:55out of his
23:55face
23:56his lower
23:56back was
23:56hurting
23:57but he
23:57still had
23:58full movement
23:58in his
24:00legs
24:00but he
24:01didn't
24:01exactly
24:01look in
24:01the best
24:02of states
24:02Alex's
24:09camera is
24:10still rolling
24:10as pale
24:11and confused
24:12Rob begins
24:12to stagger
24:13that's when
24:14he started
24:14to like
24:15I want to
24:15say slur
24:16his words
24:16or like
24:17he started
24:18to lose
24:18consciousness
24:19do you want
24:19some water
24:20or anything
24:20I'm going
24:21to just
24:22walk it
24:22up
24:22but then
24:24Rob begins
24:24to groan
24:25and struggles
24:26to remain
24:26upright
24:27do you want
24:28to lie down
24:28we all
24:30kind of
24:30knew
24:30like
24:31now
24:31we need
24:31to get
24:32you some
24:32medical
24:32assistance
24:33and some
24:33help
24:33here
24:33he literally
24:36went white
24:37and green
24:38then
24:39he passes
24:40out
24:41a member
24:44of staff
24:45calls an
24:45ambulance
24:46but it
24:47happened
24:47so fast
24:48briefly he
24:53comes to
24:53he was
24:56pretty much
24:56out of it
24:57like you
24:57couldn't
24:57really have
24:58a proper
24:58conversation
24:58with him
24:59so then
24:59I think at
25:00that moment
25:00we're all
25:01a bit like
25:01maybe it's
25:02a head
25:02concussion
25:03or a head
25:04injury
25:04and not
25:05just like
25:06the injury
25:07from the
25:07impact
25:08on his back
25:08Alex films
25:09as paramedics
25:10arrive and
25:11place Rob
25:11on a stretcher
25:12to move him
25:13to the ambulance
25:14I actually
25:14showed the
25:15GoPro footage
25:16on my camera
25:16to the paramedics
25:17so you could
25:17see what had
25:18happened
25:18and what kind
25:19of injuries
25:19Rob may have
25:20sustained
25:20Rob calls
25:23his wife
25:23Sam
25:24who arrives
25:25just in time
25:26to see him
25:26in the ambulance
25:27before it
25:28leaves
25:28she said
25:31she was
25:31pretty worried
25:32she said
25:32she'd never
25:32seen me
25:33in that
25:33much pain
25:33before
25:34Rob's taken
25:35to Manchester
25:35Royal Infirmary
25:37scans reveal
25:38he has no
25:39head injuries
25:39but he has
25:40fractured his
25:41sacrum
25:41a large bone
25:42at the base
25:43of his spine
25:43which can lead
25:44to nerve damage
25:45in the legs
25:46and is extremely
25:47painful
25:48I was really
25:49fortunate
25:50that I could
25:51move my legs
25:51I could move
25:52my toes
25:52I could feel
25:52everything
25:53so I managed
25:54to surf
25:55are gone
25:55without any
25:56nerve damage
25:56Rob gives
25:58Alex and his
25:59other friends
25:59the news
26:00status update
26:01I have fractured
26:04the sacrum
26:05sacrum
26:06in my lower
26:07back
26:07and I've got
26:08a bleed on
26:08it as well
26:09so
26:09waiting on a few
26:11more scans
26:12to get checked
26:12out
26:13because Rob's
26:14fracture is stable
26:15five days after
26:17the accident
26:17he's allowed
26:18home to recover
26:19I spent pretty
26:20much a week
26:21in bed
26:21after that
26:22now
26:23four weeks
26:24in
26:24I'm moving
26:25around way
26:26more comfortable
26:26I'm really
26:27lucky
26:28he gets a chance
26:29to watch the
26:30accident back
26:31thanks to Alex's
26:32video
26:32oh
26:33for me
26:36that one
26:36doesn't look
26:37like it
26:38it was bad
26:38at all
26:39it just looks
26:39like it comes
26:40down
26:40and landed
26:41on my bum
26:42like it did
26:43put things
26:44into perspective
26:44like one minute
26:45everything is fine
26:46the next minute
26:47you make a small
26:48mistake
26:49and everything
26:50just changes
26:51and your world
26:51gets flipped
26:52upside down
26:53Alex is extremely
26:54glad his friend
26:55and work collaborator
26:57won't have any
26:58lasting effects
26:59from the fall
26:59we do have some
27:00filming projects
27:01coming up in the
27:01future which I'm
27:02quite excited for
27:03and Rob too
27:05is keen to get
27:06back to work
27:07I'm trying to
27:07take it easy
27:08but my work
27:09revolves around
27:10mountain biking
27:10this year I'll
27:12probably tackle
27:13less dangerous
27:13things just so
27:14I can keep
27:14on filming
27:15and doing
27:15what I love
27:16that's it
27:25from close
27:26calls
