00:00To what extent has Europe suffered economic losses from climate-related events since 1980?
00:10Europe has experienced over 790 billion euros in economic losses due to extreme weather and
00:17climate-related events from 1980 to 2023. Floods and heatwaves have been the primary
00:23causes of economic damage across the EU. Germany has suffered the highest total economic losses
00:29during this period, amounting to 180 billion euros. This is followed by Italy at 135 billion euros,
00:37France at 130 billion euros, and Spain, which suffer a loss of 97 billion euros due to such events.
00:45While larger economic losses in wealthier and more developed countries may seem significant,
00:50they tend to have a smaller impact on the nationwide economy compared to smaller losses suffered by
00:56poorer, less developed nations. Wealthier countries tend to allocate a smaller portion of their
01:01public budgets for recovery or may be better equipped to handle such losses. Western and
01:06Central European countries like Slovenia, Belgium and Germany experience higher losses per square
01:12kilometer, while Eastern and Northern countries like Finland and Estonia tend to suffer less financially.
01:18Most European countries have private insurance to protect against climate-related natural hazards.
01:24However, only Denmark and Norway have more than 50% of their losses covered by insurance.
