The Story of Dawood (AS) and the Giant Jaloot (Goliath)

A Story of Faith, Courage, and Divine Power

Long ago, in the ancient lands of Palestine, a fierce and terrifying warrior named Jaloot (Goliath) led a mighty army. He was enormous in size, feared across the region, and known for his brutal strength. The children of Israel — the Bani Isra’il — had lost their courage. Their lands had been invaded. Their hearts were filled with fear. They needed a savior, a leader who could help them regain their lost glory and guide them back to faith in Allah.

A Nation in Fear

After Prophet Musa (AS) had passed away, the people of Bani Isra’il had grown weak in their faith. They forgot the miracles they had witnessed — the parting of the sea, the manna from heaven, the protection of Allah. Without strong leadership and spiritual guidance, they were divided and defeated.

When Jaloot’s army began conquering cities, the Bani Isra’il turned to a prophet among them and begged:

"Appoint for us a king so we may fight in the cause of Allah."
(Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:246)

The prophet warned them: “What if you refuse to fight when battle is ordered?”
They cried, “How can we not fight when we’ve been driven from our homes and children?”

So Allah appointed a king named Taloot (Saul) to lead them. Though he was not wealthy or well-known, Allah had chosen him for his knowledge and strength. Some of the people doubted him, but the faithful among them obeyed.

Taloot Tests His Army

Taloot gathered a large army and began the journey toward battle. But Allah wanted to test who was truly loyal. Taloot led his army to a river and told them:

“Do not drink from this river. Whoever drinks is not from me, except for the one who takes only a handful.”
(Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:249)

Most of the soldiers failed. They drank to their fill and were left behind. Only a small group of true believers — just a few hundred — remained with Taloot. Among them was a young shepherd boy named Dawood (David, AS).

The Challenge of the Giant

When Taloot and his small army finally came face to face with Jaloot, they were terrified. Jaloot stood tall and fierce in full armor, holding a sword the size of a man. He challenged anyone to fight him — but no one dared.

The men around Taloot trembled. They said:
“We have no power today against Jaloot and his army.”
But the believers — the few with strong hearts — replied:
“How many times has a small group defeated a large group by Allah’s will!”
(Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:249)

It was then that Dawood, the young shepherd boy, stepped forward. He was neither a soldier nor a warrior. He was humble, kind, and full of faith. But he believed in Allah’s power and had complete trust in Him.

Taloot was surprised. He said, “You are only a boy. Jaloot is a giant and a trained fighter.”

But Dawood replied with courage:
“I have killed lions and bears who attacked my sheep. With Allah’s help, I will defeat this tyrant.”

01:10If you're ready, let's begin.
01:12Once upon a time in an ancient land, there was a small village in the middle of fertile lands.
01:27In this village, a young boy was growing up, living a modest life with his family.
01:33He was the youngest son of his father.
01:35This boy was from the descendants of Bani Israel.
01:38He was a shepherd whom people didn't care much about.
01:43But destiny had big plans for him.
01:46This boy was Dawood.
01:49He spent his childhood watching over his flocks.
01:52He spent his days on green hills where the wind gently blew through wide valleys.
01:58He only had a shepherd's staff and a small slingshot.
02:01But these simple tools were not ordinary for him.
02:05He used his slingshot with great skill.
02:08And he used to pray among the echoing mountains.
02:11Because his greatest weapon was his heart full of faith.
02:16From a young age, it was clear he was different.
02:19He wasn't just someone who watched over sheep.
02:21He was someone who questioned the meaning of everything around him and searched for wisdom.
02:26He used to look at the night sky and think about the order of the stars.
02:29He would remember Allah with the voice coming from his heart.
02:34His family, especially his older brothers, thought he would live a simple life as a shepherd.
02:39For them, Dawood was not a warrior or a leader.
02:43But Allah had a different plan.
02:45Allah had written that this small boy would one day change the fate of an entire nation.
02:50But like every great story, his story would also be shaped by a turning point.
02:54Because soon, he would face one of the greatest fears of Bani Israel.
03:00One of the most famous moments in history was going to happen between a young shepherd and a giant warrior.
03:07That giant warrior was none other than Goliath.
03:10At that time, Goliath was the powerful king of the Amalekah tribe, which lived between Egypt and Sham.
03:17He defeated Bani Israel and took their women and children as captives.
03:22He also captured the precious Ark of the Covenant that had been protected since the time of Musa.
03:28This Ark contained holy relics.
03:31To insult them, Goliath threw it into filth.
03:35In the Quran, this chest is called Tabut.
03:38Among Jews and Christians, it is known as the Ark of the Covenant.
03:42Bani Israel were very upset because they had lost the Tabut.
03:47They were restless and sad.
03:49All they wanted was to get it back.
03:52At that time, there was a prophet among them, according to narrations, named Shamuil.
03:58The people asked him to give them a king who would lead them.
04:01Shamuil prayed, and Allah revealed that a man named Talut should be chosen as their king.
04:07At that very time, an 18-year-old young man was in Talut's army.
04:13This young shepherd was Dawud.
04:15Dawud joined Talut's army with his father and 13 brothers.
04:19He used to herd sheep.
04:21He was very brave and skilled at using a slingshot.
04:24One day, he told his father,
04:26All the mountains and stones are making tasbi with me.
04:30His father replied,
04:31Oh Dawud, good news for you.
04:33Because Dawud had a loud and beautiful voice, he was brought in front of Talut.
04:39Talut liked him and made him a close companion.
04:42Later, Dawud joined Talut's army as they prepared to fight against the tribe of Amalika.
04:48While the army was on the move, three stones on the road spoke to Dawud and said,
04:55Take us and kill Goliath with us.
04:58So he picked them up and later saw that they had miraculously become one single stone.
05:05On the other hand, Talut made a promise.
05:08Whoever kills the giant Goliath, I will give him my daughter.
05:12Finally, Talut's army, now only 313 believers left, came face to face with the enemy.
05:21The verse says,
05:22When Talut and his soldiers faced Goliath and his troops, they said,
05:26Ya Rabbana, pour upon us patience, make our steps firm, and help us against the disbelieving people.
05:34The most feared name among Bani Israel in this battle was without doubt the giant Goliath.
05:39He was very cruel and an extremely strong warrior, like a giant.
05:46His armor was shining under the sun, and his huge sword seemed to cut through the air.
05:51He was not just a warrior.
05:53He was fear itself in physical form.
05:57He stood in the middle of the battlefield and shouted to Bani Israel,
06:01Let one of you come and fight me.
06:03None of the soldiers from Bani Israel dared to face this fearless giant warrior.
06:10No one had the courage to step forward.
06:13Then Dawud stepped forward.
06:15Everyone was shocked.
06:16Goliath, trusting in his power, looked down on Dawud.
06:20O weak one, are you the one they sent to face me? he asked.
06:24Tell me, why have you come?
06:27Dawud replied,
06:28I have come to fight you.
06:30Goliath laughed at him.
06:32How could a shepherd fight a warrior?
06:34But Dawud remained calm.
06:36He knew that Allah would help him.
06:39He didn't even wear armor.
06:41His weapon was clear, a small slingshot and an unshakable faith in Allah.
06:46Dawud picked up his slingshot and walked with his own feet toward the giant warrior.
06:52He didn't take his eyes off Goliath and answered,
06:54You come to me with a sword and a shield, but I come to you with this slingshot.
07:01Then the moment came.
07:02Dawud placed the special stone into his slingshot.
07:05He took a deep breath and threw the stone with great speed toward Goliath.
07:10The stone flew through the air and hit Goliath right in the forehead.
07:14For a moment, everything stopped.
07:16Then the giant warrior lost his balance and fell off his horse.
07:20Silence was broken by screams of victory.
07:23Bani Israel had witnessed a young shepherd defeating a giant warrior.
07:28Goliath was dead, and his army began to panic and run away.
07:32Goliath, a proud and powerful king, was defeated despite all his strength and visible superiority.
07:39This was not just a victory in battle.
07:41It was a real example of faith, courage, and trust in Allah.
07:47Dawud was no longer just a shepherd.
07:49He was now a hero, but this was only the beginning of his story.
07:54Allah says in the verse,
07:56And with the permission of Allah, they defeated them.
08:00Dawud killed Goliath, and Allah gave him kingship and wisdom,
08:04and taught him what he willed.
08:06If Allah did not defend people against each other,
08:09the earth would surely be corrupted.
08:11But Allah is full of bounty to the worlds.
08:14This victory opened a new door in his life.
08:20Now, a greater journey was waiting for this young man, kingship.
08:25The victory cries that began with Goliath falling to the ground
08:28changed the fate of Bani Israel.
08:31After this event, the name of Dawud began to echo everywhere.
08:36The people saw him as a hero.
08:38Even King Talut admired him,
08:40but great victories often come with great tests,
08:42because although people admire the light they see,
08:46sometimes they try their best to put it out.
08:49After the victory, Talut burned all the war spoils.
08:53According to the law of Musa,
08:55spoils of war were not allowed to be taken,
08:58so they had to be burned.
09:00When Talut returned to Jerusalem,
09:02Shamu'il said to him,
09:04Allah has given you the victory he promised.
09:07Now fulfill the promise you made.
09:09So Talut gave his daughter to Dawud.
09:12At first, Talut treated Dawud with love
09:16and gave him an important position in his army.
09:19But over time,
09:20the people's love for Dawud
09:22planted seeds of jealousy in Talut's heart.
09:26A phrase spreading among Bani Israel
09:28kept him awake at night.
09:30Talut defeated thousands,
09:32but Dawud defeated tens of thousands.
09:36These words sparked the fire of jealousy inside Talut.
09:39He began to see the young warrior as a threat.
09:42He started making plans to remove him.
09:45But Dawud always acted by seeking refuge in Allah.
09:49He escaped from Talut's anger
09:51and lived in different regions for years.
09:54Finally, when Talut died,
09:56all eyes turned to Dawud.
09:59The people of Bani Israel wanted him as their king
10:02because he had won their love
10:04with both his bravery and his justice.
10:07And so, from being a simple shepherd,
10:10he now took the throne as a prophet king.
10:13Dawud was not just a warrior.
10:15He was a king who represented justice.
10:18During his rule,
10:19he never oppressed his people.
10:21He cared for the poor
10:22and protected the orphans.
10:24His leadership was built on justice,
10:27wisdom,
10:27and deep faith in Allah.
10:30Dawud was not a king
10:31who stayed far from his people.
10:33He personally mixed with them
10:34and listened to their problems.
10:36Under his rule,
10:38both the rich and the poor
10:39were judged by the same laws
10:41because he believed that justice
10:43is one of the greatest trusts from Allah.
10:49All the people obeyed him.
10:51In the Quran, it is said,
10:53O Prophet, be patient with what they say
10:55and remember our servant Dawud
10:57who had great strength,
10:58he always turned to Allah.
11:01Allah gave Dawud a powerful
11:02and beautiful voice.
11:04When he recited the Zabur,
11:06wild animals would gather around him
11:08and listen.
11:09Allah also taught Dawud
11:11the art of making armor.
11:13He gave him a special skill
11:14in this craft.
11:16In the Quran, it is said,
11:18We surely gave Dawud
11:20a special favor from us.
11:22O mountains and birds,
11:24make Tasbi with him.
11:26We softened iron for him.
11:28Make wide coats of armor
11:29and keep proper measure
11:30in making them.
11:31Do it properly
11:32and work righteousness
11:33with your family.
11:35I am surely watching
11:36everything you do.
11:37We taught him to make armor
11:39to protect you during battles.
11:41Will you then be thankful?
11:43Before the time of Dawud,
11:45armor was not practical.
11:46It was made from flat iron plates.
11:50Allah taught Dawud
11:51how to make better armor.
11:54He softened the iron
11:55and created rings
11:57from which he made
11:58flexible and useful armor.
12:00By doing this,
12:02Dawud not only protected
12:03his armies from their enemies,
12:05but also earned his living
12:07through the work
12:08of his own hands.
12:10Even though he was a prophet
12:12with political power and wealth,
12:14he chose to live
12:15by his own labor.
12:16As the Prophet Muhammad
12:18sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
12:20said,
12:21No one has ever eaten
12:23better food
12:24than what he earned
12:25with his own hands.
12:27The Prophet of Allah, Dawud,
12:29used to eat
12:30from what he worked for
12:31with his own hands.
12:32The people who turned
12:34into monkeys.
12:35The Ash'ab al-Sabd,
12:38people of the Sabbath,
12:40lived in the city of Madian,
12:41located between Egypt
12:43and Medina,
12:44by the coast of the Red Sea.
12:46Their population
12:46was around 70,000.
12:48They did nothing
12:49except worship on Saturdays,
12:51as work on that day
12:53was forbidden for them.
12:54They had also made a promise
12:56to Dawud
12:57not to hunt on that day.
12:59Later,
13:01Shaitan whispered to them,
13:02You are not forbidden
13:04from catching the fish,
13:06only from eating them.
13:08As a divine test,
13:10fish would appear
13:11in abundance on Saturdays
13:12and disappear on other days.
13:15This made Shaitan's temptation
13:17very attractive
13:17to some of them.
13:19The people of Madian
13:20were then divided
13:21into three groups.
13:22The first group
13:23disobeyed Allah's command
13:25and caught the fish.
13:27They both ate
13:28and sold them.
13:29They would cast their nets
13:30on Saturday
13:30and collect the fish
13:32on Sunday.
13:33The second group
13:34did not join
13:35in the sin of fishing,
13:36but they also did not
13:37stop the wrongdoers.
13:39They stayed silent
13:40and did not advise
13:41or warn anyone.
13:43The third group
13:44obeyed Allah's command
13:45and also warned
13:47the ones who broke
13:48the Sabbath rule.
13:49They even criticized
13:50the silent group
13:51for not speaking up.
13:52The silent ones responded,
13:54Why do you tire yourselves out
13:56advising people
13:57who are already
13:57going to be destroyed?
13:59You're wasting your efforts.
14:01But the warners answered,
14:03We are doing this
14:05so that we are not blamed
14:06in the presence of Allah.
14:08We want to have an excuse
14:09and not be held responsible.
14:13Later,
14:14this third group feared
14:15that the punishment
14:16coming to the others
14:17might affect them too,
14:18so they built a wall
14:20to separate themselves.
14:21When the voices
14:22behind the wall
14:23suddenly went silent,
14:25they looked and saw
14:26that the others
14:27had all been turned
14:28into monkeys
14:28in just one night.
14:31These unfortunate people
14:32were punished
14:33because they ignored
14:34Allah's command.
14:36They wandered around
14:36their own relatives
14:37who had obeyed Allah
14:39for a few days.
14:41Then,
14:42after three days,
14:43all of the disobedient ones
14:45who had turned
14:45into monkeys died.
14:48According to Imam al-Baghawi,
14:51in his book,
14:52Ma'alima Tanzil,
14:53even those who didn't hunt
14:55but also didn't stop
14:56the wrongdoers
14:57were transformed
14:58into monkeys
14:59along with them.
15:01In the Quran,
15:03this event is described
15:04as follows.
15:06Ask them about the town
15:07that was by the sea
15:08when they violated the Sabbath.
15:10The fish would come
15:12to them openly
15:13on their Sabbath day,
15:14but on other days
15:15they would not come.
15:17Thus,
15:18we tested them
15:19because of their rebelliousness
15:21when a group among them said,
15:23Why do you preach
15:24to a people
15:24whom Allah will destroy
15:26or severely punish?
15:28The warners replied,
15:30So we may have an excuse
15:31before our Lord
15:33and perhaps
15:34they may become mindful.
15:36When they ignored
15:37the warnings,
15:37we saved those
15:39who forbade evil
15:40and punished the wrongdoers
15:42with a severe punishment
15:43because of their corruption.
15:45Then,
15:46when they arrogantly refused
15:48to stop what was forbidden,
15:49we said to them,
15:51Be despised monkeys.
15:54Since Muslims believe
15:56in all the prophets
15:56and make no distinction
15:58between them,
15:59including believing
16:00in Isa as a prophet,
16:02the Jews once said,
16:03We do not know
16:04of a worse religion
16:05than yours.
16:06In response,
16:08the following verse
16:09was revealed,
16:10Say,
16:11Shall I inform you
16:12of what is worse
16:13than that
16:14in punishment with Allah?
16:15It is those
16:16whom Allah has cursed,
16:18upon whom
16:18his anger has fallen,
16:20those whom he turned
16:21into monkeys and pigs,
16:23and who worshipped
16:24false gods.
16:26These are in a worse position
16:27and further
16:29from the right path.
16:30As for Dawood's prayers,
16:32the Prophet Muhammad
16:33once shared one of his
16:37beautiful supplications,
16:39O Allah,
16:40I ask you for your love,
16:42the love of those
16:43who love you,
16:44and the actions
16:45that will bring me
16:46closer to your love.
16:47O Allah,
16:48make your love
16:49more beloved to me
16:50than myself,
16:51my family,
16:52and even cold water.
16:54By sharing this du'a,
16:56the Prophet,
16:57sallallahu alayhi wasallam,
16:59taught us that Muslims
17:00can make such heartfelt
17:02and comprehensive prayers
17:03just as Dawood did.
17:07Dawood was blessed
17:08with many honors,
17:09divine help,
17:10strong soldiers,
17:12and a mighty army.
17:13He was also given
17:14prophethood,
17:15wisdom,
17:16correct judgment,
17:17a book,
17:18a law,
17:19knowledge,
17:20action,
17:20eloquence,
17:21and deep understanding.
17:23Allah says,
17:23we made his kingdom strong.
17:26We gave him wisdom
17:27and clear speech,
17:28the ability to judge
17:29between truth
17:30and falsehood.
17:31Allah also said to him,
17:33O Dawood,
17:34we have made you
17:35a khalifa,
17:36leader on earth,
17:38so judge between
17:39people with justice.
17:40Do not follow
17:41your desires,
17:42or they will lead you
17:43away from the path
17:44of Allah.
17:46Surely,
17:46those who go astray
17:47from Allah's path
17:49will have a severe
17:50punishment on the day
17:51of judgment
17:51for what they forgot.
17:54Dawood,
17:54who was both
17:55a prophet and a king,
17:57divided his time
17:58into four parts.
17:59In the first part,
18:01he worshipped.
18:02In the second part,
18:03he judged between
18:04people in legal matters.
18:06In the third part,
18:07he gave advice
18:08and sermons
18:09to the people.
18:10And in the fourth part,
18:11he took care
18:12of his personal needs.
18:15Dawood faced
18:16some tests in life.
18:18In the end,
18:19Allah showed him
18:20his human weaknesses
18:21and possible mistakes.
18:23Dawood turned
18:24to repentance
18:25immediately.
18:26Allah forgave him
18:28and guided him
18:29on the path
18:29that leads
18:30to eternal life.
18:33One day,
18:34while Dawood was
18:35busy with worship,
18:36two men came to him.
18:38But no one was ever
18:39allowed to enter
18:40his private worship space
18:42while he was in seclusion
18:43for prayer and remembrance.
18:45Dawood became startled
18:47by the sudden appearance
18:48of these men
18:49because no one could
18:50normally enter the place
18:52whose doors were closed.
18:54Even though he told them
18:55that he was in a time
18:56of worship,
18:57they didn't listen.
18:58They said,
18:59Worship has no specific day.
19:02And then they explained
19:03their request.
19:04The rest of the story
19:05is told in the Quran
19:06as follows.
19:08Oh, Muhammad,
19:09has the story
19:10of the two disputing men
19:12come to you?
19:14They climbed over
19:15the wall of the prayer room
19:16and entered the presence
19:17of Dawood,
19:18and he became afraid of them.
19:20They said,
19:21Don't be afraid.
19:22We are two men
19:23who have a dispute.
19:24Judge between us
19:25with justice.
19:26Do not be unfair.
19:28Guide us to the right path.
19:30One of them said,
19:31This is my brother.
19:33He has ninety-nine sheep
19:34and I have only one.
19:36But he said,
19:37Give it to me as well.
19:38And he overpowered me
19:40in the argument.
19:41Dawood said,
19:42He has certainly wronged you
19:44by wanting to add
19:45your sheep to his own.
19:47Indeed,
19:48many partners
19:48wrong one another,
19:50except those who believe
19:51and do righteous deeds,
19:53but how few they are.
19:55Then Dawood realized
19:56we had tested him,
19:58so he asked for forgiveness
19:59from his Lord
20:00and bowed down
20:01in prostration
20:02and turned to Allah.
20:04So we forgave him,
20:06and indeed,
20:07for him is closeness
20:08to us
20:09and a good end.
20:11Dawood had made
20:12a quick judgment
20:12without listening
20:13to the other side.
20:14But when both sides
20:16of a matter
20:16are not fully heard,
20:17the decision may change.
20:19The one who seems right
20:20could be wrong,
20:21and the one who seems wrong
20:23could be right.
20:24So as soon as
20:25the disputing men left,
20:27Dawood realized
20:28he had made a mistake,
20:30a Zalah,
20:31and understood
20:32that it was
20:33a divine test.
20:34He immediately prostrated,
20:36repented,
20:37and asked Allah
20:38for forgiveness.
20:39Allah forgave him.
20:41These events serve
20:42to remind even prophets
20:43of their human limitations
20:45before Allah
20:46and provide examples
20:47for the followers
20:48who come after them.
20:49This does not harm
20:50their prophethood
20:51or their quality
20:52of Isma,
20:53being protected
20:54from major sin.
20:56According to the scholars
20:57of Tafsir,
20:58such tests are seen
20:59as
20:59Hasanatul Abrar,
21:02Sayyiatul Mukaraban,
21:04meaning that even
21:04the small slips
21:05of the most righteous
21:06are great lessons
21:08for the rest of us.
21:09Events like this
21:10show us
21:11how we should behave
21:12when we fall
21:13into similar situations.
21:15On the day of judgment,
21:17Dawood will be
21:18among the closest
21:18servants to Allah.
21:20In a hadith,
21:21the Prophet Muhammad
21:22sallallahu alayhi wasallam
21:24said,
21:25Those who rule
21:26with justice
21:27will be seated
21:27on pulpits of light
21:29next to Ar-Rahman
21:30on the day of judgment.
21:32They are the ones
21:33who are just
21:33in their decisions
21:34with their families
21:36and those
21:37under their responsibility.
21:39The Prophet
21:39sallallahu alayhi wasallam
21:41also said,
21:43On the day of judgment,
21:45the most beloved
21:45person to Allah
21:47and the one closest
21:48to him
21:48will be a just leader
21:50and the most hated
21:52to Allah
21:52and the furthest
21:53from him
21:54will be a tyrant leader.
21:56Regarding this matter,
21:57Ali radiallahu anhu
21:59said,
22:00If anyone tells
22:01the story of Dawood
22:02in a wrong and ugly way
22:04like some storytellers do,
22:06I will give him
22:07160 lashes.
22:10Without a doubt,
22:11Dawood has a special
22:12closeness in the presence
22:14of Allah,
22:14a noble status
22:15he will reach
22:16and a beautiful place
22:18in paradise.
22:20About the judgments
22:21of Dawood
22:21and his son Sulayman,
22:23Allah says in the Quran,
22:25And remember Dawood
22:26and Sulayman
22:27when they gave judgment
22:28about a field
22:29into which some people's
22:30sheep had strayed by night,
22:32and we were witness
22:33to their judgment.
22:35According to the
22:36Tafsir explanation,
22:38Dawood and Sulayman
22:39gave different rulings
22:41in this case
22:41between the owners
22:42of a field
22:43and the owners
22:44of a sheep flock.
22:46Dawood ruled
22:47that the sheep
22:47should be given
22:48as compensation
22:49to the owner
22:50of the damaged crops
22:51based on the value
22:53of the field
22:53and the sheep
22:54being equal.
22:56But his son Sulayman
22:57gave a different judgment.
22:59He said,
23:00the field
23:01should be handed over
23:02to the sheep owners
23:03so they can repair
23:04the damage
23:04until the field returns
23:06to its original state.
23:08Meanwhile,
23:09the sheep should be given
23:10to the field owner
23:11so he can benefit
23:12from their milk,
23:13wool,
23:14and offspring
23:14during that time.
23:17Dawood was pleased
23:18with his son's opinion
23:19and accepted his reasoning,
23:21giving up his own ruling.
23:22The Fast of Dawood
23:28It is reported
23:29that Dawood
23:30had a strong love
23:31and endurance
23:32for worship.
23:33He used to fast one day
23:35and break his fast the next.
23:37This form of fasting
23:38later became known
23:39as Saum Dawood,
23:41the Fast of Dawood.
23:42Dawood would seek
23:43the most virtuous times
23:45to worship Allah.
23:46One day,
23:47he asked Jibril,
23:48O Jibril,
23:49which time is the best?
23:51Jibril replied,
23:51O Dawood,
23:53I know of no better time
23:54than the shaking of the throne
23:55during the time before dawn.
23:58The most beloved prayer to Allah
23:59is also the prayer of Dawood.
24:01He would sleep for half the night,
24:03pray for one third of it,
24:05and then sleep again
24:06for one sixth of the night.
24:08According to reports,
24:10Dawood divided the night
24:11into six time periods.
24:14He would sleep
24:14during the first three parts,
24:16half the night,
24:17pray during the fourth
24:19and fifth parts,
24:19and sleep again
24:21during the sixth.
24:23He worshipped
24:23during those middle parts
24:25because they were times
24:26when divine mercy descends
24:28and prayers are most accepted.
24:31He slept again
24:31in the final part
24:32to wake up fresh
24:34for the morning prayer
24:35and remembrance.
24:37The practice of fasting
24:38every other day,
24:39Saum Dawood,
24:41is a form of worship
24:42left as a legacy
24:43to the Ummah of Muhammad.
24:45The messenger of Allah,
24:47Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam,
24:49said that the most virtuous fasting
24:51is the fast of Dawood.
24:53It is narrated from Abdullah,
24:55the son of Amr ibn al-As,
24:57radiallahu anhu,
24:59that he once said,
25:00By Allah,
25:02I will fast during the day
25:04and pray all night
25:05for the rest of my life.
25:07When this was mentioned
25:08to the Prophet,
25:09Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam,
25:11he asked him,
25:12Did you say that?
25:14Abdullah replied,
25:16Yes,
25:17O messenger of Allah,
25:18I did.
25:20The Prophet,
25:21Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam,
25:22said,
25:23You will not be able
25:23to keep up with that.
25:25Sometimes fast
25:26and sometimes break your fast.
25:28Sleep,
25:29and also wake up
25:29for night prayer.
25:31Fast three days a month.
25:32Every good deed
25:33is rewarded ten times,
25:35so this will be like
25:36fasting the whole year.
25:37Abdullah replied,
25:38I can do more than that.
25:40So the Prophet said,
25:41Then fast one day
25:42and break fast for two days.
25:44Abdullah said,
25:46I can do even more than that.
25:48The Prophet then said,
25:49Then fast one day
25:51and break the next.
25:52This is the fast of Dawood,
25:54and it is the most balanced
25:56and the best type of fasting.
25:58When Abdullah asked
25:59if he could do even more,
26:01the Prophet replied,
26:02There is nothing better than that.
26:05Dawood was deeply grateful
26:07to his Lord.
26:08Once he said,
26:09Oh my Lord,
26:10how can I thank you?
26:11Because even my ability
26:13to thank you
26:14is itself a blessing from you.
26:17Then Allah revealed to him,
26:19Do you acknowledge
26:19that all the blessings
26:21you have are from me?
26:23Dawood replied,
26:24Yes.
26:25Allah said,
26:25Then this understanding
26:26is enough for me
26:27to be pleased with you.
26:29The death of Dawood Dawood
26:31ruled for 14 years
26:32and passed away
26:34at the age of 100.
26:35His son Sulaiman succeeded him.
26:37The grave of Dawood
26:39is in Jerusalem,
26:40southwest of Masjid al-Aqsa
26:42on Mount Zion
26:43in the place known
26:44as the city of Dawood.
26:46The Prophet Muhammad
26:47salallahu alayhi wasallam said,
26:49Dawood was extremely protective
26:52of his religion
26:53and his family.
26:54When he left his house,
26:55he would lock the door tightly
26:57and no one was allowed
26:58to enter until he returned.
27:01One day,
27:02when he came back home,
27:04he saw a man standing
27:05in the middle of the house.
27:07He asked,
27:08Who are you?
27:09The man replied,
27:10I am someone
27:11who is not afraid of kings
27:13and no door or curtain
27:15can stop me.
27:17Dawood said,
27:18By Allah,
27:18then you must be
27:19the angel of death.
27:21Welcome by Allah's command.
27:23Shortly after,
27:24his soul was taken.
27:27Dawood's 40-year rule
27:29marked the most glorious period
27:31of the children of Israel.
27:33He conquered Jerusalem
27:34and made it the capital
27:35of his kingdom.
27:36He was both a king
27:37and a prophet,
27:39two great honors
27:40given to him by Allah.
27:42After him,
27:43his son Sulaiman ruled
27:44and was also given prophethood.
27:47One of the shared
27:48and most important duties
27:49of all prophets
27:50is to deliver and explain
27:52the commands of Allah
27:53to the people.
27:55Dawood fulfilled this duty
27:57and his worship
27:58with full dedication,
27:59setting a great example for us.
28:02The prophet Muhammad
28:03sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
28:05advised his companions
28:07to follow the example of Dawood.
28:09In the Quran
28:10and in many hadiths,
28:12Dawood is praised
28:13and recommended
28:14as a role model for believers.
