Senior Citizens Bill to be tabled next year, says Nancy

After officiating the Asean+Republic of Korea Conference on Care and Support for Older Persons on Monday (June 30), Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the government had completed the draft for the Senior Citizens Bill, which aims to protect the rights and well-being of the elderly, and it is expected to be tabled in Parliament next year. 00:08Okay, what we are doing now, because we have already prepared the draft.

00:13So what we are doing now, that we need to go back to the industry players, the stakeholders,

00:19to talk to them again, and we have to refer also to every state.

00:23So this is an ongoing thing, and the state that we have consulted the state as well,

00:27because the bill is not going to be just for us over in West Malaysia.

00:32I mean, the peninsula is also the various states, especially those in the Borneo side,

00:37and they want to make sure that they are agreeable to whatever we are doing or we are planning to do.

00:45And this is already being done in the process.

00:50The only thing is that the stakeholders need to be referred to again.

00:54But the draft is already there, with the hope that by before end of the year,

00:58we should be able to send.

01:00We planned now, we planned to send to AGC.

01:04And then after that, maybe, if it can be done this year, better still.

01:10But I have a feeling that it has to wait for next year to get the bill to be tabled in Parliament.

01:17Actually, the draft is already there.

01:20We want to expedite this.

01:26It's just that there are quite a number of people who are coming in with a lot of things.

01:31You know, this industry is booming, and then a lot of people are interested in,

01:38they want to be a part of this, and they want to be a part of the law-making process through the consultation.

01:45So, this is what we are already doing, and still in the process again to consult them.
