00:00It is viewers like you to make videos like this possible.
00:06Please support Mickey Mouse Park dot com.
00:09It sparked an idea.
00:24He posed a technical challenge to his longtime collaborator and co-creator of Mickey Mouse,
00:31Ub Iwerks.
00:32If they can put three screens together, why can't we do a full circle?
00:37Ub answered with a new invention, Circarama.
00:43My dad's joy was solving problems, number one, for Walt.
00:49He designed this circular rig, a round, big brown plate, with 11 16-millimeter cameras
00:56on it, like spokes in a wheel.
00:58The cameras were all interlocked together with a chain drive inside the base, so they would
01:03all run in synchronization.
01:05The thing you'd always worry about is, what if you lost a loop, or if you had a film jam
01:10in a camera, then you didn't lose just the one, you lost all 11 of them.
01:14In the early days, Walt walked through, and he folded his arms as he would, and he said,
01:20well, he says, yeah, it's pretty good.
01:21And I think to him, I said, pretty good.
01:23It's sensational.
01:24He says, someday, though, there'll be technology where there'll be a screen all the way around
01:29it and all over the ceiling, and you'll be immersed in it, and there won't be any screens.
01:34Well...
01:35Circarama soon evolved into circle...
01:40In 1952, This Is Cinerama introduced American audiences to multiple screen movies.
01:45Within a few years, major motion pictures were utilizing the Cinerama three-screen projection
01:50system.
01:51Unimpressed Walt Disney decided he would go Cinerama one better at Disneyland.
01:55Soon, Disney legend John Hinch was drawing up a concept illustration with Grand Canyon images
02:00displayed in the round.
02:02The original camera was mounted on an AMC car to shoot the footage.
02:06This opening day, Disneyland attraction featured a film entitled Tour of the West.
02:16Here are a couple shots of the projection system for Cinerama.
02:19This was not that good, it's true.
02:21It's a great experience.
02:22It was a big experience.
02:24There will be some more at the time as an artist.
02:25The most rival they were about to show you a career.
02:29The most rival is the most rival I'd like to show you on time.
02:32That's the most rival I'd like.
02:33This is not a family artist.
02:34It's a very beautiful person in the world, but keep driving through my car and the world in the
02:35world.
02:36I was trying to show you a great way.
02:37It's so fun.
02:39We would have to show you the most important thing.
02:41You would have to know?
02:42And I've got to know you.
02:43That this is a movie.
02:45I'm like, is a movie.
