01:04its last song,
01:05InnoVentions opened in the big round carousel theater at the back of Tomorrowland.
01:10InnoVentions wasn't a daring risk for the park. It had already been a success at Walt Disney World before it
01:15came to Anaheim.
01:16At Disneyland, the attraction continues to be an ever-changing, multifaceted presentation of innovative edutainment.
01:24InnoVentions focuses on the future, not the distant future, but the future nonetheless, even if that future sometimes seems like
01:31it's only ten minutes away.
01:32In its first decade, InnoVentions spread displays of gadgets and games, many of which were already on the market, out
01:38across its 30,000 square feet.
01:40Subdivided zones pertaining to modern living, entertainment, home, transportation, information, and sports and recreation,
01:47grouped exhibits together thematically, with each zone sponsored by major companies like Yamaha and Pioneer.
01:53The content of the zones was frequently updated, making each InnoVentions visit a new experience.
02:00Typically, there was a ring of exhibits circling the slowly rotating perimeter that were demonstrated by cast members.
02:06One complete revolution still takes about 18 minutes.
02:10In a central hub, there are hands-on games, quizzes, gadgets, and computers for guests to linger over.
02:16The upstairs floor offers more exhibits, corporate displays, and the exits.
02:21Throughout the building, guests may have seen voice-activated appliances, the latest PlayStation games, an imaging program that ages a
02:29just-taken photograph,
02:30a tree made out of circuit boards, a futuristic car, and virtual reality exercycles.
02:36As of 2008, the interior space has been dominated by the 5,000 square foot InnoVentions Dream Home,
02:43a variation of the House of the Future that lasted ten years near Tomorrowland's entrance.
02:47Sponsored by Microsoft and other companies, the home displays high-tech, well-furnished rooms used by the fictional Elias family.
02:55Elias was both Walt Disney's middle name and his father's first name.
02:59InnoVentions guests will also hear long spiels about next-generation cars coming from major sponsor Honda.
03:05What guests won't find inside InnoVentions are restrooms. Evidently, those haven't been InnoVented yet.
03:10The Carousel Theater is usually filled with audio-animatronic figures. There were over a hundred Fork America Sings.
03:16But now, only one prominent AA character is on view. And he's a doozy, though.
03:21Hosting the proceedings of Wisecracking Robot with Nathan Lane's voice, transparent skin, and a see-through lab coat.
03:28He is called Tom Morrow. He recalls a similarly named flight director in the old Flight to the Moon attraction.
03:34Another nostalgic nod to the past is a Sherman Brothers familiar There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow tune bolstered with
03:41new lyrics.
03:42The theater exterior salutes the past with banners showing old Tomorrowland attractions.
03:47A nice reminder that innovation is nothing new at Disneyland.
03:50...
03:56...
04:06...
04:06...
04:07...
04:21Hello, happy humanoids, and welcome to my land.
04:27My name is Tom Morrow, and this is Tom Morrowland.
04:31I'm here to tell you about the place where innovation and invention are smooshed together to form one big, fun
04:40same word, INNOVENTIONS!
04:45Amazing new stuff that is going to make your life better.
04:48But dreaming up new stuff and making it a reality are two different things to leave you here.
04:55Who could ever forget the old plastic house?
04:58Robot mutters?
05:02Robot kitchens?
05:04The personal jetpack?
05:06And my old time favorite, the flying dingy thingy.
05:12How do you think it?
05:14Well, they seem likely by days of the time, but here in Tom Morrowland, or Mee-land, as I like
05:21to call it, the stuff you're about to see is no dream, it's real, it's actual, everything inside its backflow.
05:30And now, it's time to ride out into the five exciting intervention zones you'll be spinning into first.
05:38Being ever so humble, there's no way like the home zone, a bright new world of innovations near daily living,
05:48and coming to your doorstep in three, two, one.
05:53There's a great big world of innovations, trying to get our lives in every way.
06:00Step to the door of yours.
06:03What is the only time for you and me?
06:15Oh, don't worry, thanks to interventions, having unexpected company is a snap.
06:21Like getting them to leave is still a nightmare.
06:25Welcome to the home zone.
06:27Yes, sir, we've got all the latest things.
06:29And I'm not talking Mr. Coffey, whose work I admire, by the way.
06:34I'm talking smart relevant of mine.
06:36Genius gadgets that take the hard work out of housework.
06:40But that's just an hors d'oeuvre, and a peritif, if I may.
06:43There's also sports, entertainment, information, and transportation.
06:47I'm going to have to ask you to leave now.
06:50I'm expecting company to arrive at any moment, so if you'll excuse me, I have to clean up this house.
06:57There's a great big beautiful tomorrow, heading right this way.
07:04We'll see you around.
07:06Open a round, open a round.
07:08How are you doing?
07:09Hey, let's give Courtney a round of applause.
07:12Courtney, what's inside the building? She's doing a great job out there.
07:14My name is Chris, and I personally like to welcome you all to my home.
07:18I was actually getting ready to enjoy a little video about the interventions of yesterday here in Tomorrowland.
07:23Isn't that right, buddy?
07:25Sorry, this is my friend I go.
07:27I'll get your chance in a second.
07:29Just a second, don't get excited.
07:31Where was I?
07:31Oh yes, 50 years ago, Walt Disney dedicated Tomorrowland.
07:34He described it as a vista into the world of wondrous ideas.
07:38A step into the future with predictions of constructive things to come.
07:41So in honor of him, we're going to take a look at the Tomorrowland of yesteryear.
07:45Maybe some of the older kids out there might remember this.
07:47Back in 1957, this stood in the entrance of Tomorrowland.
07:50It was something called the House of the Future, sponsored by the Monsanto Company.
07:54A house made entirely of plastic.
07:5715,000 pounds of plastic, to be exact.
08:00It showcased futuristic conveniences, like something called a microwave, ultrasonic dishwasher.
08:07Things that weren't heard of back then.
08:1010 years and 20 million visitors later, when it came time to take the house down,
08:14it didn't want to go very easy.
08:16Wrecking balls actually bounced off the walls.
08:19Torches, jackhammers, nothing worked.
08:20Finally we had to bring in choker cables and break it off piece by piece and have it trucked away.
08:25The very building we're in right now was originally something called the Carousel of Progress.
08:29This chronicle the way technology changed over the years, the eyes and experiences of one animatronic family.
08:34And while it was a carousel of progress, inside there was a model, a tiny little model for something called
08:40Project X,
08:41who later became to be known as Walt Disney World.
08:44This is Epcot actually, the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.
08:48That's in Orlando, Florida.
08:50This was Walt's original idea for a planned community.
08:53The cool thing is, some of the interventions that were designed yesterday actually exist today.
08:58They came to be.
08:59Well, maybe not the plastic houses, but my wife haven't sure come in handy.
09:04Something buddy, right?
09:06Want to go outside?
09:06Okay, he needs a break.
09:08My house is really cool because my dog doesn't need to know his way around it.
09:12The house sort of turns itself inside out for him.
09:14See you a little bit later, I wonder.
09:16Actually, my house is set up on one system called Control 4.
09:19It takes care of the lighting, sound, security, and temperature.
09:22It's a wireless system.
09:23You can carry around with it.
09:24You can mount it on the wall.
09:25This is right here, actually.
09:27Let's see if we can change the lighting over there in the kitchen, for example.
09:32Oh, yes.
09:33How did it all feel?
09:34It's the way you're cooking, huh?
09:35Very nice.
09:36And the vacuum cleaners are just getting smaller and smaller.
09:38You guys have probably already seen this in storage.
09:40It's something called Roomba by iRobot.
09:42This is cool.
09:43It spins around.
09:44It cleans your house.
09:45It has these sensors on it so it won't fall down stairs.
09:49It doesn't get caught in or around furniture legs.
09:51It's remote controlled and has six preset cleaning times on it.
09:54You can program your vacuum when they turn on and clean your house.
09:57It also has a kid sister by the name of Scuba who will mop your floors.
10:00Now, they can do your floors, but they can't do your clothes.
10:03And Whirlpool came up with this pretty empty closet right here.
10:06This is the Personal Valet Clothes Vitalizing System.
10:10Take your favorite shirt or pants at the back of the closet that are stale and wrinkled.
10:14You can hang up in here.
10:15Give it about a half an hour.
10:17It'll press and freshen your clothes for you.
10:19No more irony ever again.
10:21Wouldn't that be nice?
10:22Oh, and wouldn't it be cool if your appliances talked to each other?
10:26You know, quiet, not creepy sort of way.
10:29Check this out.
10:30This is the new Whirlpool fridge.
10:31It comes equipped with something called a web tablet.
10:33This reads barcodes on packages we get at the grocery store.
10:36Say, for instance, that I want to make some frozen mac and cheese.
10:40You run this by the scanner and now the fridge is talking to the oven.
10:44Sending over all the cooking instructions as well as adding more of these to the grocery list right there for
10:48next time.
10:49I don't have to do anything.
10:51We just put it inside the oven and let it do its thing.
10:53Oh, and if I have to go to work, my oven turns into a combination oven-refrigerator.
10:58See, during the daytime, they will keep my dinner for that night nice and cool for me.
11:02In the afternoon, it turns on and cooks the meal knowing what time I'll get home because I preset that
11:07time I'll return home.
11:09But if you're going to be late from work, no problem.
11:11Just call the oven on your cell phone so you can change that preset ready-to-eat phone.
11:15It's going to be a sweet feature for bachelors.
11:17You're going to know if it's going to get older.
11:19Let's see.
11:19What else do I have?
11:20Oh, one more thing.
11:21We've got to take care of the pets.
11:23That's right.
11:23How many guys out there have fish by any chance?
11:26Fish are pretty popular.
11:27I love fish.
11:29Those really cool, those big tanks are really neat.
11:32I don't like the idea of cleaning them out, though.
11:34That doesn't seem like a whole lot of fun.
11:35Pioneer came up with this.
11:36This is the Fish Life Display.
11:38A fully interactive fish tank you never have to clean, and the fish always respond to you
11:43because all you have to do is touch the tank and they come right to you.
11:46See?
11:47Hi, guys.
11:48Oh, they look hungry.
11:49Okay.
11:49Now, to feed the fish, this is easy.
11:50You just touch the top part of the screen like that.
11:53That's sort of thing.
11:54And the little biggie just came in there and just took it.
11:56Oh, look at him.
11:57Did you see that?
11:58That was kind of rude.
12:00Just for that, I'm going to make him dance.
12:01Hey, do your little dance.
12:03Dance, monkey.
12:04There you go.
12:04Pretty cool, huh?
12:05Yeah.
12:06You can draw your own fish, which is kind of fun.
12:09Do you want to give Michael a friend to play with or, you know?
12:12There you go.
12:14There you go.
12:14Okay.
12:14Go swim.
12:15Swim, fish.
12:16Swim.
12:17There he goes.
12:18Where are you?
12:18He's swimming.
12:22Guys, don't chase him around.
12:24You're going to make him nervous.
12:25He's...
12:26Oh, he exploded.
12:27Okay.
12:29Exploded.
12:30Okay.
12:30And this is our friend Ibo from Sony.
12:33He's our entertainment robot.
12:34He can run up to 250 words as he matures.
12:37He'll learn his name.
12:38He'll come when you call him.
12:39He even has several moods he can express.
12:42He seems to be in a pretty good mood today.
12:44Hey, buddy.
12:44Stand up.
12:45Let's do a little trick, okay?
12:46Now, he's got 15 motors in his legs and his neck, which allows him to move so smoothly.
12:52Good boy.
12:53Let's try a trick, okay?
12:54Uh, Ibo, shake.
12:59Let's...
13:00Shaking.
13:01You get it.
13:02Shake hands.
13:03He's cute.
13:06You can also verbally answer certain questions, too.
13:09Ibo, how would you describe sandpaper?
13:15Very smart dog.
13:16He's the ultimate guard dog, too.
13:18He has a camera built into his head.
13:20He can actually watch and survey your house at all times that you can access from any one
13:24of the world on the internet, even when you're on vacation.
13:27He has a love-hate relationship with one of the rides here in the park, though, over
13:30behind Fantasy Man.
13:31The big building with the spinning stuff on it.
13:33The, uh...
13:35Yeah.
13:36He's a little upset.
13:37He couldn't get a job over there because he can't sing.
13:40He's a little...
13:41That's right.
13:42No one's judging you.
13:43Not everyone's a good singer.
13:45It actually takes a while.
13:51You know, you get your point.
13:53You can mimic people's voices, too, like the king.
13:56They don't need elders and smaller.
13:58They need kids that sing and put on their arms and stuff.
14:04I don't know why you didn't get the job.
14:05I don't know what the future has in store for us, folks, but I can tell you this.
14:08Many of the interventions that are designed and created today might make our lives a little
14:11more fun in the future.
14:13And there's more things for you to see in our building.
14:15There's two floors of it.
14:16Matter of fact, go out there and go see everything.
14:29There's two floors of it.
14:31There's two floors of it.
14:31There's two floors of it.
14:34There's two floors of it.
14:40There's two floors of it.
14:44There's two floors of it.
14:45There's two floors of it.
14:46There's two floors of it.
14:47There's two floors of it.
14:48There's two floors of it.
14:48There's two floors of it.
14:48There's two floors of it.
