00:00Damon Arnett is getting a second shot at the NFL, and this time, he's more ready than ever.
00:06The Houston Texans signed the former first-round cornerback on June 20th,
00:10giving him a fresh opportunity after years of personal and professional setbacks.
00:15Arnett's career started off with big expectations. He was the 19th overall pick in the 2020 NFL
00:22Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders. But things went south fast. He only played 13 games in two seasons
00:29before getting released in 2021 after a viral video showed him brandishing a gun and making
00:34threats. That was just one of several off-field issues. And in 2022, he was let go from the
00:41Kansas City Chiefs practice squad after being arrested for assault with a deadly weapon.
00:46Since then, Arnett has been on a journey of serious self-reflection and rebuilding. He took a step back
00:53from the spotlight, and United Football League, UFL, executive Daryl Johnston made sure Arnett
00:58wasn't rushed back into football. Johnston held him out for a full year before allowing him to play
01:05with the Houston Roughnecks, just to make sure he was truly in the right place mentally. And it looks
01:11like that patience paid off. Arnett made a big impact with the Roughnecks—18 tackles, five passes
01:17defensed, a sack, and even a pick-six—but the biggest changes were off the field. Coaches, teammates,
01:24and league officials saw real growth in him. I put a lot of effort into just making sure that
01:30Damon was in the right spot mentally, said Johnston. We really felt Damon had earned the
01:36right to have a second opportunity to change his life around. Johnston also gave Arnett a little
01:41reminder. You're just at the beginning. You've got so much work to do. Now 28, Arnett knows this
01:49opportunity with the Texans isn't about picking up where he left off, it's about starting fresh.
01:54Houston's secondary is already stacked with talent—Derek Stingley Jr., Kamari Lasseter,
02:00Jalen Petra, Kalen Bullock, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
02:05So Arnett isn't walking into a guaranteed roster spot. He has to earn it, and prove that he's not just
02:12a talented player, but a dependable one too. I had to take a look in the mirror, Arnett said.
02:18I had to make some serious life changes. The biggest thing I did was bring back my support
02:24system, my foundation. I won't let go of that again. He admitted that being told, no, by Coach
02:32Johnston, being held out of football, was a hard pill to swallow. But in hindsight, it was necessary.
02:39That hurt my heart, he said. Because I thought I was doing everything right. But clearly, I wasn't.
02:47Things kept happening and I had nobody to blame but myself. Arnett credits his coaches,
02:52like C.J. Johnson and Daryl Johnston, for guiding him and not giving up on him. And others are seeing
02:59the change too. His old coach with the Raiders, John Gruden, had this to say. He's got a whole new
03:05identity. He doesn't look the same. He doesn't act the same. He has changed his circle. He's focused
03:13and determined. Leon O'Neal Jr., his teammate with the Roughnecks, added. D.A. is a phenomenal human
03:20being. We all make mistakes, but he's learning from them every day. His maturity is impressive.
03:28Arnett knows he's walking a fine line. One wrong step could end his NFL return just as quickly as it began.
03:34But he's ready to prove the doubters wrong and show that he's a new man, on and off the field.
03:42I'm twenty-eight years old. I've got three kids and parents who love and support me, he said.
03:48This time, I'm a dog on the field and a professional. I wasn't a professional before. I just played hard.
03:55Now I've got the mindset, the maturity, and the work ethic to go with it. He summed it up simply.
04:01I feel like I'm the best version of myself that I've ever been.
04:05I'm a dog on the field and I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on the field. I'm a dog on
