00:00It all started in 1873 in Scotland Street in Sheffield, which is not far from this site.
00:08That was 1873. Then in 1874 it was located here, originally with ice cream, horse and carts,
00:15and then down the line the sweets came afterwards. It was started by the founder,
00:22my great-great-grandfather, Luigi Gurelli, who came from Genoa, couldn't speak a word of English,
00:27had to learn English on the job kind of thing, and obviously it's just passed through generations over the years,
00:34and it's 151 years in September that we've been here, one of the oldest shops in Sheffield,
00:39and we try and get all the old-fashioned sweets, and we still manage to get them pretty much.
00:43We still do the ice cream as well as we've been, we've got trailers, ice cream bands,
00:48and everything about the shop is originally how it was from day one, other than a card machine,
00:52which we had to get in the Covid pandemic, and that was the only time we ever closed,
00:56when it was Covid, with the lockdowns, but we came through all that, all the Covid pandemic,
01:02all the changes in the area, bus lane, clear air zone, all made things a lot harder,
01:07but we're still here, we're still, you know, carrying on, and won't let it stop us, basically.
01:12It was important to carry it on. We've seen so many changes, even in my 24 years,
01:17and nobody ever dreamt about the Covid pandemic happening.
01:19That was the biggest, most radical thing, really. You know, to come through that,
01:23and everyone suffered so much, didn't they? And many businesses, unfortunately, didn't survive it.
01:28Luckily, we did, obviously, due to being in the industry so many years, ultimately.
01:34We've got the original, the old-fashioned original sweets, for example, your pear drops,
01:46your wine gums, your Yorkshire mixture. They can't get the originals anymore, but we can,
01:51because we've dealt with the same companies and firms for beyond, you know, for years and years down the line.
01:55So, luckily, we can get the original products. Other people, they can get the sweets, but they're a cheaper version.
02:01They're not the proper original versions. Anything blue, the children look. Anything blue.
02:06Blue busy babies, blue busy bottles. Then you have your traditional ones, your pear drops, your chocolate limes,
02:12chocolate eclairs, raspberry ruffles. There's a whole range, like your bonbons, for example.
02:17We've now got seven different bonbons, millions for the kids, obviously, and the range is getting bigger.
02:22Currently, they're bringing all new ranges of fudges out. There's about 15 new fudges coming out.
02:28Not just your original vanilla fudge, which we will always have in, and your choc split, for example,
02:33and your rum and raisin. They're bringing out bubblegum, which we've recently got in.
02:36They're bringing out Oreo, cookies and cream, after eight, cream egg fudge,
02:42limoncello fudge, unbelievably. You name it, there's all these new fudges.
02:45So, we will give them all a go slowly. We're introducing them all slowly, but we will make sure we keep our traditional,
02:50you know, vanilla fudging always, you know, at the same time.
02:53Everyone in Sheffield knows us pretty much. Not many don't.
02:56We're sort of an institution in Sheffield, people tell me.
02:58And we've stuck to what worked. We haven't changed anything other than the car machine.
03:02As I say, nothing has changed. It's the original design.
03:05As you can see, the layout is exactly the same. The walls, the ceiling, the floor, everything.
03:10We've not modernised. It's stuck with tradition.
03:12Kept the same supplies. Kept the same suites.
03:14You know, we've not moved on with the times at all.
03:17Yes, we're on Facebook now. Yes, we've got a car machine.
03:20But other than that, principally, we've kept the same setup, you know,
03:24all from many, many years from day one, basically.
03:27Yeah, basically.
