Did the JT injury actually change the #Celtics plans?? Greg: "Tatum thing was a built-in excuse"
Do you think Jrue and/or KP would have been dealt regardless?
Transcript
00:00Yesterday, Gary Washburn wrote a story, and I believe he heard this from the Celtics.
00:04I don't think this is his creating this out of thin air, but it is the height of disingenuous
00:12commentary. This is directly from Gary Washburn. Quote,
00:18the Celtics did not want to trade Holiday or Przingis, and they fully intended to keep both
00:25for the long term before Tatum's injury period. Now, Wick Grosbeck joined us on March 21st,
00:33which was three months, two months before Tatum was injured in game five, I believe,
00:40of the second round of the playoffs. He told us then that no team was going to be in the apron
00:49twice. They knew then it was regurgitated over the course of months by Sham Sharanya in different
00:56ways. This, to me, is a way to try and play it both ways, because if Tatum doesn't get hurt,
01:06then they're sitting here, and I guess I would put it this way, you would need Porzingis and Holiday
01:15more now than you did before Tatum got hurt, if you're really talking about winning.
01:19Yeah. So that makes no sense. Does that make sense to anybody?
01:23It's a built-in, the Tatum thing was a built-in excuse for this new ownership.
01:29Right. In the next sentence, the second apron of the league's salary cap was worth the penalty
01:33as long as the Celtics were playing into mid-June. Once Tatum was sidelined, the short-term agenda
01:40and the blueprint laid out by both the Thunder and the Pacers is that the recipe for success
01:45of the new CBA is youth value contracts and athleticism. Well, value contracts, Jason Tatum
01:51and Jalen Brown are being paid at the absolute tippity-top of the pay scale. And I just, like,
01:59I don't know why people accept this. So if you were okay paying into the tax, then why wouldn't
02:05you try and pursue that more now, given that your team needs to improve? Well, you said it at the
02:09time that Wick was on with us. There are no real basketball penalties when it comes to the second
02:17apron. It's only financial penalties for the organization. So if you're an owner and you want
02:24to win, you can spend. Right. And you can pay the penalty. Right. But there are certain things that
02:30you lose the mid-level exception and you get stuck. But who cares? The mid-level exception,
02:35seven, you may lose a pick seven years from now. Right. Like, okay. I mean, I don't know all the
02:40stuff that it is. Why do people that root for the team say, okay, go owner, save money? I like,
02:47literally, I don't understand that. But here's the way I would look at it. Because even if Tatum
02:52doesn't get hurt and they, let's say they lose to the Knicks, I don't want them bringing back the same
02:58team.
