Local children vocalise solutions to youth crime in remote Western Australia

In the remote Kimberley community of Halls Creek, young people are playing a role in finding solutions to deep-seated disadvantage and crime. Decision makers hope to get better results by listening to the concerns of young people in the community.

00:00Kids in Holes Creek are imagining their future, and that of their remote town.

00:13I would like to have a big playground.

00:18In the town hall, formal consultations are underway.

00:22Holes Creek is a really good town, it's like home to people.

00:28But the town has a youth crime problem.

00:32Big kids like stealing cars and stuff.

00:36Leaving community members frustrated.

00:40Stealing someone else's car and damaging it just for fun of it, they think it's really

00:47cool until someone's going to get hurt.

00:51But they also have potential solutions.

00:54To maybe put like a fake car machine so then they can feel like they're driving a car but

01:03they don't actually have to like take it.

01:05And decision makers are listening.

01:08What is it that's not here?

01:09What do they need?

01:11If you don't ask them, how can you create the environment that allows them to grow?

01:28A night space will soon open to offer that support.

01:33I hope it's going to make a change in the crime and hopefully we'll have kids all happy.

01:40But deeper changes are needed to keep the next generation in town.

01:44It's good to create more opportunities here so that our kids can be successful in their own home.

01:51We need jobs, not just any old jobs but jobs that have a future for our young people.

01:58And some young leaders are planning to stay to make a difference.

02:02I really do hope Porch Creek gets better.
