Zelenskyy and Council of Europe sign agreement to launch tribunal for war in Ukraine

The Ukrainian president said the tribunal is a “real chance” to achieve justice as he hopes it will one day try top Russian officials, including Putin, for their unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

00:01Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an agreement with the Council of Europe to set up a special tribunal for the war in Ukraine.
00:09The tribunal seeks to try top Russian officials for crimes of aggression after they launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.
00:17Existing international courts, including the International Criminal Court in The Hague,
00:22lack jurisdiction to try Russian nationals for that specific offense.
00:26Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset said that this is the first tribunal launched to address the crime of aggression.
00:33Zelensky referenced other tribunals including those which tried Nazis and individuals accused of crimes in the Yugoslav war, arguing that they should serve as a foundation.
00:43The Ukrainian leader added that the world needs to see a, quote, honest and historic verdict to lift the veil on Russia's crimes.
00:51He also expressed optimism that the tribunal is a real chance to restore justice to the people of Ukraine who've suffered unspeakable crimes at the hands of Russian forces.
01:00Zelensky says he hopes to see Russia's President Vladimir Putin, who he labeled a war criminal, being held to account one day.
01:08The location of the court is yet to be decided, but the Ukrainian leader says The Hague, home to the ICC, would be perfect.
