00:00You want to meet Dolly? She's right there.
00:01I'm Dolly. I'm the book lady.
00:03You remember me?
00:05Welcome to Ms. Mojo.
00:07And today, we're counting down our picks for the most extraordinary, positive, and or culturally defining moments of Dolly Parton's personal or professional life.
00:15It's not you for pausing him and me for roping him and you for acting like he was first prize at a turkey shoot.
00:21Number 10. Opening Dollywood.
00:23Before 1986, this venue went through several names and variations.
00:28Dolly Parton then became a part owner and the place got a major upgrade.
00:32Dolly Parton turned a dream into a reality 40 years ago, thinking, if only I could change the H to a D on the iconic Hollywood sign.
00:41Few other people can claim that they have a theme park named after them.
00:44The country singer's input helped bring in more interest and money to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
00:49Dollywood certainly helps the local economy with added tourism and the need for so many workers on staff.
00:55All the people that work here, they've been so very supportive.
00:58So we have a lot of great people involved in all this.
01:01I can't take all the credit.
01:02There's also rides like Wild Eagle and attractions like the artist's repurposed tour bus.
01:07It's a fun way to spend the day, but it's also filled with details celebrating the performer.
01:11Is there anything cooler than that?
01:14How would I not feel loved with that crowd?
01:16That's great.
01:1740 years of Dollywood.
01:18What an incredible accomplishment.
01:20Well, it's a wonderful thing, and I love these people, and they're acting like they love me.
01:25Number 9.
01:26Compensating a female Buffy producer.
01:28If you didn't already know, Dolly Parton played a part in helping Buffy the Vampire Slayer happen.
01:33Twylo Dave.
01:35What, in dark glasses and a trench coat?
01:36Please.
01:37I can work this out myself.
01:39The singer's production company Sand Dollar helped produce the TV series.
01:43Not only that, Parton stepped in when she realized producer Gail Berman wasn't getting her fair share.
01:48Many of Berman's male colleagues received sizable royalties, but she didn't earn as much.
01:53The legendary performer then wrote a check to show support for the TV executive.
01:57Let's face it, none of us are ever going to have a happy, normal relationship.
02:01It just goes to show that the icon puts her money where her mouth is,
02:05providing personal help when somebody isn't being treated fairly.
02:08Dolly Parton was an uncredited producer.
02:11Yes, little known fact, the legend Dolly Parton was a producer.
02:16Number 8.
02:16Working with the trio.
02:18The only thing better than one legend is three of them.
02:21Dolly Parton teamed up with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt.
02:24They eventually released the album Trio in 1987.
02:27It's just to love you.
02:30It's to love, love, love you.
02:34Winning Grammys and wowing audiences, the three developed incredible musical chemistry.
02:39They came back again with the Trio 2 record in 1999.
02:43There were children crying and colors fly.
02:47Once again, the group showed their skills with awesome covers.
02:51Their ability to interpret the work of other stellar artists like Neil Young deserves more attention.
02:56Even if they only have two official albums,
02:59their work should be commended for bringing together such talent.
03:02I just let him decide where we go.
03:06Number 7.
03:07Islands in the Stream with Kenny Rogers.
03:10As a solo artist, Dolly Parton's career is undeniably great.
03:14She also knows how to make a duet special.
03:16And we rely on each other.
03:19Ah, ah.
03:20From one love to another.
03:23With the help of Kenny Rogers, the singer turned Islands in the Stream into a certifiable classic.
03:28Both of their voices make this love song sound incredible.
03:32It's both catchy and memorable, making listeners smile ever since the release in 1983.
03:37Written by the Bee Gees, this feels like a high-class assembly of musical excellence.
03:49It went to number one on multiple Billboard charts and was hugely successful for both performers.
03:55While they recorded again together, Rogers and Parton were arguably never better together than here.
04:00Hold me closer and I feel love.
04:04Hey, let me see tomorrow.
04:07Number 6.
04:08Donating to wildfire victims.
04:10And tonight a new message, a significant offer of help from Dolly Parton, who calls that region home.
04:16When somebody is in need, Dolly Parton doesn't hesitate to find a way to offer a helping hand.
04:21This was the case when a wildfire hit Tennessee in 2016.
04:25Dolly said today she was, quote, heartbroken about the East Tennessee fires.
04:29Disaster struck the Great Smoky Mountains area,
04:32inspiring Parton to help those that lost their homes.
04:35The My People Fund helped give families $1,000 in monthly payments.
04:39This led to millions being dispersed to those in need, with displaced people receiving much-needed aid.
04:45Parton's foundation helped out victims for six months.
04:47And it makes me emotional, you know, because it's like you can't ever do enough.
04:51But the fact that it's mattered is very touching to me.
04:55In a quick turnaround, the singer's organization stepped in to provide support for Sevier County.
05:00Today, those people received $5,000.
05:04Dolly Parton raised more than $9 million through a telethon, money that went to help hundreds of families.
05:10Number 5.
05:11Refusing and then accepting the Rock Hall nomination.
05:14As a leading voice in her genre, Dolly Parton is synonymous with country.
05:18She's also attracted the attention of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
05:21The organization wanted to acknowledge her influence on music, but the singer didn't want the nomination.
05:27Parton wrote,
05:28Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated, I don't feel that I have earned that right, so I must respectfully bow out.
05:35Parton later changed her mind and became an official inductee in 2022.
05:39You might remember Dolly said she would respectfully bow out of any nomination to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in March, but now, well, it sounds like she's changing her, too.
05:48The fun didn't stop there, either.
05:50After becoming a member of the hall, she released an album of covers.
05:54Rockstar was her chance to try out the rock sound in a more formal way.
05:58I've been rockin', rockin', rockin', rockin' since the day I was gone.
06:02The Rock Hall has a recent history of broadening their horizons, inviting a wider array of artists into the fold.
06:08It's only fitting that they choose to honor an iconic musician.
06:11I did not want to take any votes away from any of the rock people that spend their life doing that.
06:17And then they kept saying, oh, we want you, you know, you've earned it.
06:20Number 4, 9 to 5.
06:22In the year 1980, Dolly Parton had an impressive year across multiple mediums.
06:27She starred in the movie 9 to 5 and wrote the theme song.
06:319 to 5, for service and devotion.
06:35The comedy has an all-star cast, showing women taking back control in their male-dominated office.
06:41Parton holds her own opposite legends Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.
06:44What are we going to do about that?
06:46Hey, we've come this far, haven't we?
06:48This is just the beginning.
06:50To reiterate the film's classic status, the country entertainer released a fun track with a hook to remember it by.
06:56The artist showed on the same project that she's also an indispensable screen performer.
07:00Some of the film's best lines and scenes feature her at the forefront, making her a movie star in her own right.
07:07If you ever say another word about me or make another indecent proposal, I'm going to get that gun of mine.
07:12And I'm going to change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot.
07:16Number 3, funding the Moderna vaccine.
07:18I'm very happy that I'm going to get my Moderna shot today.
07:22Time and time again, this talented artist proves that she has a tremendous influence outside the world of music.
07:28Her extraordinary help with medical research happens to be just one example of that.
07:33Parton tweeted about her donation today, saying,
07:35I just wanted it to do good, and evidently, it is.
07:39After a car crash, Dolly Parton had a chance meeting with Dr. Najia Boomrod.
07:43Her connection to the doctor inspired a donation, with the money being integral in making the Moderna vaccine for COVID-19.
07:50Dr. Najia Boomrod, you know, we work very close together.
07:53I'm sure he's back home going to be watching this.
07:55He's going to be proud of you.
07:57He's going to be proud of me, and I'm just proud of all of you at the Vanderbilt Research Center.
08:05Donations from Parton helped continue essential research at Vanderbilt University.
08:09With her important and pointed support, the iconic singer added another stellar and surprising footnote to her legacy.
08:16And I just felt like that would be a good thing for me to do.
08:19So I donated, you know, a million dollars to the research.
08:23Yeah, for that.
08:24Number 2.
08:25Writing I Will Always Love You
08:27This work is such a part of pop culture that it's hard to believe anybody wrote it.
08:31In the 1970s, Dolly Parton was enjoying a tremendous solo career that included fantastic work like Jolene.
08:37There's nothing I can do to keep from crying when he calls your name Jolene.
08:43She also worked on other generational tunes like I Will Always Love You.
08:48Her version is great on its own, highlighting her skills as a writer and vocalist.
08:53Love you
08:55However, it's hard to deny the power of the Whitney Houston version.
09:00Houston took the song into another dimension and made it a new standard.
09:04Love you
09:05Some people might not know and others might have forgotten.
09:10But the single's enduring legacy starts with Parton.
09:13So beautiful, so big.
09:15Had no idea I'd written a song that could be that important.
09:18And I didn't.
09:19I think she just took it and made it so much more than what it would have ever been.

09:40Number 1. Dollywood Foundation and Charity Work
09:43My hopes for the new year is a little more kindness, a little more love, a little more trying to pull together instead of falling apart.
09:52Along with her incredible music career, Dolly Parton will be remembered for her charity work.
09:57Her foundation and its many projects support noble causes.
10:00This includes helping people in need from her home state of Tennessee and beyond.
10:05One notable program is the Imagination Library, helping kids get access to books and to promote literacy.
10:11She's going to see the world through the love and the generosity of people like you, Dolly, who stand in all those gaps that we have.
10:19Our family is so grateful for you.
10:21Oh, what a sweet, wonderful story.
10:24She's continuously shown that she loves to give back to her community and never forgets where she came from.
10:30It's easy to look at her tremendous work and call her something of a miracle worker.
10:34Without her contributions, many Americans would not be where they are today.
10:38Is there anything else you want to say to all your fans out here?
10:41Yeah, I want to say thank you!
10:43Thank you!
10:43Did we forget another amazing highlight from Dolly's life?
