00:00You've probably heard this phrase before, no good deed goes unpunished.
00:04You ever heard that before? It probably actually has happened to you before.
00:08I know it's happened to me. You do something you think is good and then all of a sudden
00:11it comes back and it wasn't as intended or people didn't receive it as intended.
00:17In fact, usdictionary.com defines it as
00:19is an idiom, no good deed goes unpunished, is an idiom that
00:24warns us that even well-intentioned actions can lead to negative consequences.
00:28It suggests that our efforts might be met with ingratitude or
00:32backlash despite our good intentions. And you've probably been there. You probably have said
00:36man, I was trying to do something good and then it just kind of got twisted out of proportion
00:39and now it was unintended and there's a backlash. It goes on to say
00:44this idiom conveys the idea that even when we do something with the best intention
00:48it doesn't guarantee that the outcome will be positive. Sometimes
00:52despite our efforts to do good, we find ourselves facing unanticipated challenges
00:56or ingratitude.
00:58It's exactly what happens in the text today.
01:02Peter and John, Jesus has healed
01:04this lame man at the gate, the beautiful gate
01:06who was lame for over 40 years from his
01:08mother's womb. Over 40 years he's been lame.
01:10Jesus heals them through
01:12Peter and now
01:13the next day, or actually
01:15that day after Peter preaches his sermon
01:18what happens is they're
01:20arrested.
01:21You would think, wait, you just did a good deed on somebody.
01:24Why would you be arrested for doing something good?
01:26And that's exactly probably what Peter and John are thinking.
01:28But that's what happens in the text.
01:30No good deed
01:31goes unpunished.
01:33And so now they're going to face a consequence
01:35from the religious leaders and the rulers
01:37of their nation here in chapter 4.
01:41So what we see is that
01:42after being arrested for healing the lame
01:43man, Peter and John answer questions
01:45about Jesus before the Jewish
01:47Sanhedrin. That's a ruling body
01:49in Israel. Of course they don't have the role
01:52of Rome over Israel, but they do have
01:54some limited restrictions and they can
01:55govern within Rome, within Israel
01:58a little bit.
01:59So they're on trial for their faith.
02:01And you know, I was thinking
02:02if I was on trial for my faith, would I have
02:03enough information to support
02:06my view of Jesus?
02:07Could I effectively talk about Jesus
02:09if I was arrested for preaching
02:11in Jesus' name, which is going to happen to them?
02:14Do I have the ability
02:15to explain who Jesus is well
02:18to the people that put me on trial?
02:19Well, it's a reasonable question.
02:22As we see the growth of the gospel
02:24in the face of persecution
02:25here in the book of Acts,
02:26as we continue on in chapter 4.
02:28So open your Bibles, chapter 4 of Acts,
02:30or turn on your biblical device,
02:32whichever the case may be.
02:33This is God's word.
02:34We want to look at it together.
02:35So chapter 3, they heal.
02:37God heals the lame man.
02:40Peter preaches a sermon
02:41about national restoration
02:43so the times of refreshing
02:44could come for Israel.
02:46The nation does not repent,
02:47does not turn back to Jesus,
02:48so the times of refreshing
02:49are still yet to come.
02:51They will.
02:52Look at verse number 1.
02:54And as they were speaking
02:56to the people,
02:57the priest and the captain
02:59of the guard
02:59and the Sadducees
03:00came upon them,
03:02greatly annoyed
03:03because they were teaching
03:05the people
03:06and proclaiming in Jesus
03:08the resurrection from the dead.
03:10And they arrested them
03:11and put him in custody
03:12until the next day
03:13for it was already evening.
03:15But many of those
03:16who had heard the word believed
03:18and the number of the men
03:19came to about 5,000.
03:21So remember,
03:22they heal the man,
03:23they go into the temple,
03:24he's leaping and praising God
03:25and he preaches his sermon
03:27and there are Solomon's porticles,
03:28Solomon's porch,
03:29preaching to the people
03:30and even more people get saved
03:32on that sermon,
03:33we are told.
03:34Did you see how it started off
03:35in verse 1?
03:36It says,
03:36and they.
03:38So Peter wasn't the only one talking.
03:40John was talking as well.
03:41We just don't have a record
03:42of what John said.
03:43John was speaking as well as Peter.
03:45So both of them were talking
03:46and giving witness
03:47to what they had seen
03:48and heard in Jesus.
03:50So the religious leaders,
03:51and it's interesting
03:52that no Pharisees are mentioned.
03:54There are Pharisees
03:55on the Sanhedrin
03:56but only the Sadducees
03:57are mentioned
03:57and there's a reason why
03:59and you're going to see
03:59in the text here
04:00in just a little bit,
04:01why just the Sadducees
04:02are mentioned here.
04:04They were so irritated
04:05that these apostles,
04:07these unlearned men
04:08were teaching the people,
04:09how dare you?
04:10Who do you think you are?
04:11You don't have
04:12the right qualifications.
04:13to preach to the people.
04:15You're just these
04:16uneducated Galileans.
04:17We can tell by your accent.
04:19You're Hicks.
04:20Who do you think you are?
04:22It's kind of basically
04:22what they're saying.
04:24Well, it's the spirit
04:25at work in Peter
04:26that gives them
04:27the credibility.
04:28It's the spirit
04:29speaking through Peter
04:30that we see here.
04:32That's who they are.
04:33They're followers of Jesus.
04:36So we see here
04:37that everything
04:37that has been happening
04:38since Pentecost
04:39gives evidence
04:40that Jesus is alive
04:42and at work
04:44in his church.
04:45He is not dead.
04:46He is risen.
04:46He's the one
04:47who healed that man
04:48at the beautiful gate
04:49through Peter, yes.
04:51But it was Jesus
04:51who healed the man.
04:52He's at work
04:53in the church
04:54and in the world.
04:55He is alive.
04:57These Sadducees,
04:59these Sadducees
05:00were closely aligned
05:01with Rome.
05:02And so Rome
05:03was the governing power,
05:04the empire of the day.
05:05They're closely,
05:06and they love
05:07the status quo.
05:09Don't shake anything up
05:10because if you shake it up
05:11and Rome gets attention
05:12of this nation,
05:13they may come
05:14and squash us.
05:15So let's just keep
05:16everything cool
05:17on the status quo.
05:18That's how the Sadducees were.
05:20And not only that,
05:21they didn't even believe
05:22in a resurrection.
05:23That's why it's so important.
05:25I think they're mentioned here,
05:26not the Pharisees,
05:26which did believe
05:27in a resurrection.
05:28Sadducees don't believe
05:29in a resurrection.
05:30They don't think
05:30there's a resurrection
05:31from the dead.
05:32So can you imagine
05:33how annoyed they get?
05:34They're saying,
05:34oh, there's Jesus
05:35rose from the dead.
05:36Oh, there is no resurrection.
05:37Yeah, but Jesus rose
05:37from the dead.
05:38We saw him.
05:40In Luke 20,
05:42there came to him
05:42some Sadducees,
05:43those who deny
05:44that there is a resurrection.
05:46So that's probably
05:47why the Sadducees
05:48are mentioned,
05:48not the Pharisees,
05:49because they deny
05:49the resurrection,
05:50and Peter's about ready
05:51to preach again
05:51the resurrection of Christ.
05:55It was offensive to them.
05:58They were offended
05:59that they were talking
06:01about the resurrection.
06:03How dare you,
06:04number one,
06:04not qualified to teach,
06:05and two talking
06:06about a resurrection
06:06which we don't even
06:07believe in.
06:08They were greatly annoyed,
06:09the text says.
06:11They took offense
06:12at what was being spoken.
06:15It just reminds me
06:16the preaching of the cross,
06:18the preaching of Jesus Christ
06:19is offensive.
06:22It always has been.
06:24It always will be.
06:25Why is it offensive?
06:26Because it cuts man
06:27at his deepest,
06:28deepest spot of pride.
06:30Man says,
06:31I can do something
06:32to earn God's favor.
06:33I can merit out
06:35more of my life
06:36of good works,
06:37but then we come along
06:38and we preach the gospel
06:39and the gospel says,
06:40no,
06:40a second,
06:40we're fallen creatures,
06:42alienated,
06:43separated from God.
06:44We need to be born again,
06:45born into the kingdom of God,
06:47a new creation in Christ,
06:48and that's what God has done.
06:50But I want to do it.
06:51No, no,
06:52that's what God has done.
06:53When you preach the cross,
06:54it's offensive to people
06:55because they think
06:56they're good enough
06:57to merit God's favor.
06:59Don't be surprised
06:59if people get sideways
07:00when you talk about Jesus,
07:02especially the gospel message.
07:04We're going to do it anyway.
07:05We're not going to
07:05intentionally be offensive.
07:07Of course not.
07:07We're not going to be jerks
07:08to people.
07:09Just be aware
07:09that when you talk about Jesus,
07:11it's likely going to be
07:12offensive to people.
07:15So they were also concerned
07:16in the Sadduce
07:16that if Rome gets attention
07:18that there's a Messiah,
07:19a king called Jesus,
07:21they may come
07:21and take away our place.
07:22So they're concerned about that.
07:24Remember,
07:24they want to maintain
07:25the status quo.
07:27This governing body,
07:28the whole governing body
07:29called the Sanhedrin
07:30is what they were called.
07:32They had adjourned for the day,
07:33so they put them in prison
07:34until the next morning
07:35because trials
07:36were not supposed
07:36to be held at night.
07:38So they put them in prison
07:39until the next morning.
07:40The only problem is
07:41they violated their own rules
07:42when they tried Jesus
07:44because they tried him at night.
07:46They violated their own rules,
07:48but here they're waiting
07:49until the next day.
07:49Oh yeah,
07:50we're going to follow
07:50our rules now.
07:51That's how much
07:52they hated Jesus.
07:55The Sanhedrin,
07:55this is the same group
07:57of people
07:57when Jesus stood before them
07:59that they condemned
08:00him to death.
08:02The same group of people.
08:03This is them.
08:04They know.
08:06He stood before them
08:07and they said this to him.
08:08In Mark 14,
08:09this is what they said.
08:11And the high priest
08:11stood up in the midst
08:12and asked Jesus,
08:13have you no answer to make?
08:15What is it that these men
08:17testify against you?
08:19But he remained silent
08:20and made no answer.
08:21Again,
08:22the high priest asked him,
08:23are you the Christ?
08:24Are you the Messiah,
08:25the son of the blessed?
08:26And Jesus said,
08:28I am.
08:29Probably ego I me.
08:30I am.
08:32I am.
08:33And you will see
08:33the son of man
08:34seated at the right hand
08:35of power
08:36and coming with the clouds
08:37of heaven
08:37and the high priest
08:39tore his garments
08:39and said,
08:40what further witnesses
08:41do we need?
08:42You have heard this blasphemy.
08:43What is your decision?
08:44And they all condemned him
08:45as deserving death.
08:46This is the same group
08:47of people
08:47that condemned Jesus
08:48to death
08:49and they knew
08:49he was innocent.
08:51They knew he was innocent.
08:52We are told here
08:54at the LAS
08:55that 5,000 people
08:56have come to faith.
08:57Probably not 5,000
08:58plus the 3,000.
09:00It is probably a total
09:01of 5,000 people
09:02have come to faith
09:03over the time.
09:045,000 people
09:05who have believed
09:06and it says men
09:07and that is typically
09:08how they counted.
09:09Sorry ladies,
09:09they did not count
09:10the ladies and the children.
09:11So this is just 5,000 men
09:13who have come to faith
09:14but there are ladies
09:14and young people
09:15who have believed
09:16the gospel message too.
09:17So we have got
09:18a whole lot more
09:18than 5,000 people
09:19that are saved
09:20at this point.
09:20The scribes
09:22get involved.
09:23These are the experts
09:24of the law.
09:24They are giving
09:25their opinion
09:25about what is going on.
09:27Now the Sanhedrin
09:29does have the right
09:30to investigate
09:30what is going on
09:31in Israel
09:32especially in religious circles.
09:34Any group
09:34that is rising up
09:35says we are part
09:35of Judaism
09:36and we are a new sect
09:38we are a new group
09:38within Judaism.
09:40I mean you have
09:40the Pharisees
09:41the Sadducees
09:42the Essenes
09:42these are all different
09:43sects within Judaism
09:44and they said
09:45okay well we are
09:46supposed to oversee
09:47the religious life
09:48of the nation.
09:49They did have a right
09:49to investigate them
09:50and seeing
09:51what they had
09:51to say
09:52but they didn't
09:53have a right
09:54to arrest
09:54innocent men.
09:56They were overseeing
09:58the nation surely
09:58but their job
09:59was to protect
10:01the true teaching
10:02of the Old Testament
10:03so they are questioning
10:04whether these guys
10:05are in line
10:05with everything
10:06that the fathers
10:06have said.
10:08Any new sects
10:09coming up in Judaism
10:10needs to be investigated
10:11and the Sanhedrin
10:14clearly recognizes
10:15this is not
10:17a new sect
10:18within Judaism.
10:19This is something
10:20completely different.
10:22This is not
10:23a new sect
10:24within Judaism
10:24and they recognize
10:25that right away.
10:26As a matter of fact
10:27they probably were
10:28thinking to themselves
10:29I'm just thinking
10:30for them
10:31they're probably
10:31thinking to themselves
10:32that Peter and John
10:34are abandoning
10:35the ways of the fathers.
10:36abandoning
10:38the teaching
10:38of Moses
10:39the abandoning
10:39of the teaching
10:40of the prophets
10:41abandoning
10:41what the fathers
10:42handed down
10:43over the ages
10:43that they're
10:44abandoning
10:45the faith
10:45of their fathers
10:46and Peter and John
10:48look them in the eye
10:49and say wait a second
10:50no no
10:50we want to tell you
10:51that Jesus
10:52is the fulfillment
10:53of the promise
10:54of the fathers.
10:55He's exactly
10:56what they talked
10:57about the whole time
10:58and all the prophets
10:59pointed to him.
11:01We're not
11:01this isn't something new
11:03this is a fulfillment
11:04of what has been
11:04spoken to the fathers
11:05from the very beginning.
11:08The apostles
11:09may have been jailed
11:10but the gospel
11:12cannot be bound
11:13and I'm so glad
11:15about that.
11:16Over the ages
11:17Satan has tried
11:18to bind the gospel
11:19message so people
11:20cannot and would not
11:21hear.
11:22Aren't you glad
11:23that he cannot
11:24cannot bind
11:26the proclamation
11:27of the gospel message
11:28and I'm so thankful
11:29I'm standing here
11:29today with thankfulness
11:31because I would not
11:31have heard the gospel
11:32message if he could
11:33have had that power
11:34to do it.
11:34He has no power
11:35to bind the message.
11:39So now Peter
11:40preaches a third
11:41sermon in the book
11:41of Acts.
11:42There's his third
11:42sermon now.
11:43He's going to talk
11:44about Jesus
11:44and again the
11:45resurrection.
11:46So look at verses
11:475 through 12.
11:50On the next day
11:51again overnight
11:51no trial
11:53during the day
11:54or during the night
11:55so they come
11:55way to the daytime.
11:57On the next day
11:57the rulers
11:58and elders
11:58and scribes
11:59gathered together
12:00in Jerusalem
12:00with Annas
12:01the high priest
12:02and Caiaphas
12:02and John
12:03and Alexander
12:04and all
12:05who are of
12:05the high priestly
12:06family.
12:06It's a complicated
12:07situation here.
12:08It's in a sense
12:09they almost have
12:09two high priests
12:10one was removed
12:11and another put
12:12in their place
12:12he hadn't died
12:13so it's a mess
12:15what's going on
12:15right here
12:16with this family
12:16and the whole
12:17priestly family
12:18and when they
12:19had set them
12:19in the midst
12:20they inquired
12:20so it's a
12:22semi-circle
12:23the Sanhedrin
12:23and they're in
12:24the midst
12:24of the semi-circle
12:25so Peter
12:26and John
12:26are standing
12:26in the middle
12:27and they're
12:28standing in the middle
12:28by what power
12:32or authority
12:34or by what name
12:35did you do this
12:36then Peter
12:38filled with
12:38the Holy Spirit
12:39said to them
12:40rulers of the people
12:42and elders
12:43if we are being
12:44examined today
12:45concerning a good
12:46deed done
12:47to a crippled man
12:48by what means
12:49this man has been
12:49healed
12:50let it be known
12:51to all of you
12:52and to all the
12:53people of Israel
12:53that by the name
12:54of Jesus Christ
12:55of Nazareth
12:56he's saying of Nazareth
12:57so there's no confusion
12:58Jesus was a common name
12:59but Jesus Christ
13:00of Nazareth
13:01can't miss him
13:02whom you crucified
13:04they know the Sanhedrin
13:06gave him over
13:07delivered him over
13:07to be crucified
13:08whom God raised
13:09from the dead
13:10oh the Sadducees
13:11are not happy now
13:11by him the man
13:13is standing
13:14before you
13:14well
13:15this Jesus
13:16is the stone
13:17that was rejected
13:18by you
13:19the builders
13:20the nation
13:20which has become
13:22the cornerstone
13:22the building
13:23cornerstone
13:24that all things
13:25are fastened together
13:26and there is salvation
13:27in no one else
13:29no one else
13:30other than Jesus
13:31for there is no other name
13:32the name of Jesus Christ
13:33of Nazareth
13:34under heaven
13:34given among men
13:36by which we must
13:37be saved
13:38so he's preaching
13:39his third sermon now
13:40they're eyewitnesses
13:42they've seen all this stuff
13:43so they're just testifying
13:44to what they have seen
13:45in a sense
13:46we're not eyewitnesses
13:48directly
13:48but we have read
13:49the accounts
13:50of eyewitnesses
13:51and we can report
13:52what the eyewitnesses
13:53have said
13:53what they have seen
13:54we have this
13:55Annas person
13:56who's probably
13:57the most
13:57most powerful
13:59political person
13:59of that day
14:00right now
14:01but he was also
14:02involved in the
14:03condemnation of Jesus
14:04John 18
14:05Annas then sent him
14:07bound to Caiaphas
14:07the high priest
14:08so he's part of
14:09the whole thing too
14:10he knows exactly
14:12what's going on
14:13typically trials
14:15were conveyed
14:16for crimes
14:17not acts
14:18of kindness
14:18and mercy
14:19he did something good
14:21no good deed
14:22goes unpunished
14:23he did something good
14:24and now they're
14:24on trial
14:25for doing something good
14:26the rulers
14:30the leaders
14:30of the nation
14:31in a sense
14:31the governing body
14:33of the nation
14:34the supreme court
14:36the administrative state
14:38all of it together
14:39for the Sanhedrin
14:40they're the state
14:42and the state
14:43is the servant
14:44of God
14:45to execute
14:46his wrath
14:46on evil doers
14:47but Peter and John
14:49were not evil doers
14:51that's the purpose
14:52of the state
14:52all government
14:53God has instituted
14:54government
14:54and the purpose
14:54of government
14:55is to punish evil
14:56and to protect
14:56the good
14:57always
14:57every government
14:58whichever kind
14:59of government
14:59our government
15:00any other government
15:01around the world
15:01is to punish evil
15:03and to protect
15:04the good
15:04they are God's
15:05servant
15:06for this purpose
15:07it's recorded
15:08in Romans 13
15:09we get this information
15:10to punish evil
15:12and to protect
15:13the good
15:13therefore whoever
15:15resists the authorities
15:16resists what God
15:17has appointed
15:18and those who resist
15:19will incur judgment
15:20for rulers
15:21are not a terror
15:22to good conduct
15:23but to bad
15:24would you have
15:25no fear
15:25of the one
15:26who is in authority
15:27then do what is good
15:28and you will receive
15:29his approval
15:30for he is God's
15:31servant
15:31for your good
15:32but if you do wrong
15:34be afraid
15:35for he does not
15:35bear the sword
15:36in vain
15:36he has a right
15:37of execution
15:38for he is the servant
15:39of God
15:40second time
15:40that phrase is used
15:41he is a servant
15:42of God
15:42an avenger
15:43who carries out
15:44God's wrath
15:44on the wrongdoer
15:45that's the purpose
15:47of the state
15:47the thing is
15:48that these guys
15:48had committed
15:49no crimes
15:50they're not wrongdoers
15:51in this case
15:52they should be
15:53promoting the good
15:54that Peter and John
15:55has done
15:55not punishing them
15:56because it was
15:57certainly not evil
15:58whose name
16:00gave you that
16:01whose authority
16:02what power
16:03it was the name
16:04of Jesus
16:05the name of Jesus
16:07has power
16:07and now Peter
16:08turns the trial
16:09back on top
16:10of the interrogators
16:11themselves
16:11and begins
16:12teaching them
16:13of course
16:14that annoys him
16:15even more
16:15what's great here
16:18is that
16:19Jesus fulfills
16:20a promise
16:20that he made
16:21to the apostles
16:21the Holy Spirit
16:24gave Peter
16:24wisdom and power
16:25to preach
16:26the name
16:26of Jesus
16:27to the Sanhedrin
16:27a direct promise
16:29of Jesus
16:29to the apostles
16:30in Luke 12
16:32we read this
16:33and when they bring
16:34you before the
16:35synagogues
16:35and the rulers
16:36and the authorities
16:37do not be anxious
16:38about how you
16:39should defend yourself
16:40or what you
16:41should say
16:41for the Holy Spirit
16:42will teach you
16:43in that very hour
16:44what you ought to say
16:45here's a direct
16:46fulfillment of the
16:47promise of Jesus
16:48to the disciples
16:49to the apostles
16:49verse 9
16:52it talks about
16:52the man who was
16:53healed
16:53in verse 12
16:54it talks about
16:54salvation
16:55saved
16:56actually the word
16:57healed
16:58is the same word
16:58as saved
16:59in verse number 12
17:00exact same word
17:01he was physically
17:02healed
17:03salvation is a
17:04spiritual healing
17:05in that sense
17:05you could look at
17:06it like that
17:07for it was not
17:08the apostle
17:08that healed them
17:09and Jesus healed
17:10them
17:11he's looking for
17:12them to turn
17:12and repent
17:13as a nation
17:13and as individuals
17:14both nationally
17:15that the times
17:16of refreshing
17:16would come
17:17that they would
17:18repent as a nation
17:19and so he
17:20he enlists
17:21Psalm 118
17:22talking about
17:23the stone
17:23that the builders
17:24rejected
17:24they reject
17:25the leaders
17:26rejected this one
17:27the one that was
17:28laid out before you
17:28becomes a stumbling stone
17:29you're tripping all over
17:30him because you can't
17:31see him
17:31as recorded in
17:33Psalm 118
17:33the stone that the
17:35builders rejected
17:36has become the
17:36cornerstone
17:37from which
17:38everything is
17:39built
17:40this is the
17:41Lord's doing
17:42it is marvelous
17:43in our eyes
17:44this is the day
17:45that the Lord
17:45has made
17:45let us rejoice
17:46and be glad
17:47in it
17:47the day
17:47of salvation
17:48is what he's
17:48talking about
17:49here in Psalm
17:49118
17:50God's day
17:51of salvation
17:52we look at
17:52the cross
17:52this is the
17:53day of salvation
17:54we turn to
17:54the cross
17:55and see
17:55yes
17:55this is the
17:56day that
17:56the Lord
17:56has made
17:57let us rejoice
17:58and be glad
17:58in it
17:58for the cross
17:59for we have
18:00forgiveness
18:01we can stand
18:02before a holy
18:03God justified
18:04with his
18:06righteousness
18:06and not have
18:08to cower
18:08away from him

18:09has completed

18:24hardening
18:25has come
18:26on Israel
18:26a veil
18:27is over
18:27their eyes
18:28Paul says
18:29until the fullness
18:30of the Gentiles
18:31come in
18:31and when the fullness
18:32of the Gentiles
18:33comes in
18:33that partial
18:34hardening
18:34is going to be
18:35lifted
18:35the second
18:36coming of
18:36Christ
18:37and then
18:37whole nation
18:38will turn
18:38to him
18:39and repent
18:40and believe
18:40that he
18:41was the one
18:41they pierced
18:42but when we
18:44say the fullness
18:45of the Gentiles
18:45that implies
18:46something
18:47the fullness
18:47of the Gentiles
18:48implies that
18:49there's a number
18:50you can't say
18:52the fullness
18:52if there's no
18:53number
18:53there must be
