00:00Susan Apio is a community health worker in northern Uganda where she serves about 8,000 people.
00:10The Buffalo Bicycle is her means of transport.
00:14With a strong steel frame, the Buffalo is not like regular bikes.
00:19With it, Apio can navigate rough rural roads to serve those in need.
00:23That is the most important thing that this bike is doing here in this community.
00:30There are people who are with underlying conditions.
00:33They pick their ARVs from our facility and I know them.
00:37So sometimes I also get busy.
00:40But whenever they come, they pick their bikes, they go and pick what? Their drugs.
00:45The bicycle is also seen as a community asset.
00:49Anyone in her village can show up and ask to use it.
00:52Barbara Akelo says she has used the bicycle at least six times already.
00:58The first was for transport to an antenatal check-up.
01:01When I was pregnant, the date I'm going back for antenatal,
01:08I can inform her that tomorrow when you are going, come and help me, you carry me there,
01:14because I'm not having a transport.
01:17Help me so that I can reach there very early, but I can come back while footing.
01:21But she always says, I will take you and then I will bring you back.
01:27With Uganda battling inadequate facilities and a shortage of health workers,
01:31community workers like Apio help to bridge the gap,
01:35carrying out sensitization, immunization and detecting disease outbreaks.
01:39I know they are supporting us with sensitization at community level.
01:45They are also supporting us also identify certain ill-health conditions at community level.
01:55Like of recent, we have heard of the MPOX outbreak in our country,
02:00and they are our primary eyes at community level.
02:06The Buffalo Bicycle is a recent arrival.
02:09It is promoted by World Bicycle Relief,
02:12a non-profit which seeks to reduce mobility challenges in poor and rural settings in Africa.
