00:00The government's proposed health insurance scheme to be funded through
00:05Account 2 of the Employees Provident Fund will be voluntary, not mandatory.
00:12Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkifli Ahmad said on Friday that only 1% of Account 2 funds
00:18would be used, calling it the best way to provide better health protection.
00:24In a Facebook post, he explained that the move is intended to improve access to faster
00:30and higher quality private health care without adding to the people's financial burden.
00:36He added that the initiative aims to offer EPF contributors the option of broader insurance
00:42coverage, especially as 32% of health care costs in Malaysia are currently paid out of
00:48pocket by those without insurance.
00:52On Thursday, Dr Dzulkifli also shared that the government is studying the possibility
00:57of allowing Malaysians to use their EPF Account 2 to pay for monthly health insurance premiums.
01:04If implemented, the scheme could enable 16 million EPF members to use their contributions
01:09to access private hospital care.
