00:00I always worked with the same components, sky, sun, sand, girl, swimsuit.
00:11How did I get started at Sports Illustrated?
00:15Oh my God, that seems like a thousand years ago.
00:18Oh, she looks cute in her bathing suit.
00:23No, not a picture of her bum, but a picture where you see her bum.
00:27Look at all the now feminist women asking me.
00:31Okay.
00:32And I'm already going straight to hell.
00:34It wasn't easy working as a woman in time eight.
00:37It was run by men for men.
00:39When I showed the pictures, I would have the managing editor there,
00:43and he could salivate while he looked at them.
00:45Sometimes I'd want to do this.
00:48It was a world that didn't feel safe, and I know I would not have stayed if not for Julie.
00:54I wasn't into the obviously sexy, which made it even sexier.
00:58She wasn't looking for perfection.
01:00She was looking for energy.
01:02I did not see myself as the all-American girl, but Julie did.
01:07This is her putting a black girl and a white girl together and saying,
01:10what, what America, what?
01:12She didn't want to objectify women.
01:14She wanted to make them people.
01:16If they wanted the sexiest pictures, I would take them out so they never even see them.
01:21This is what we have been given as our powers, and then we are shamed for using them.
01:26Women will be shamed for everything, won't they?
01:29You've never seen a nipple before?
01:31Well, the Madonna whore thing is totally patriarchal.
01:34Right?
01:35They don't control what beauty is.
01:36We do now.
01:37It's something that Julie actually set in motion long ago.
01:40We are all beautiful human beings, so take a picture of it.
01:47Life is all too short.
01:49It comes, stays, it goes.
01:51Make a wish.
01:53She never really got the credit that she deserved.
01:57Hi, Jules.
01:59We were just talking about how much you loved us and made us feel beautiful and strong.
02:04She changed my life.
02:06Thanks.
02:07One of my babies.
02:08I am.
02:09I never had a boring life.
02:13A lot of struggles.
02:16But if you survive them, you're stronger.
