Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn, President Trump was asked about efforts to get the Big Beautiful Bill past the finish line.
Transcript
00:00It's there for a hundred years.
00:02Mr. President, as the Senate works on the big, beautiful bill,
00:05it seems like salt is going to be a really big issue
00:07between Senate Republicans and House Republicans.
00:09So what are you telling senators?
00:11Because the New York Republicans on the House side
00:12are making clear that that's a red line for them.
00:15Well, if it were a red line,
00:17then get ready for a 68% tax increase in 1929,
00:23because we're taking care of that issue, too.
00:25You know what that is.
00:27That's debt ceiling.
00:28And the debt ceiling, we have to move the debt.
00:31And if we don't move the debt, you violate governance.
00:35It's a terrible thing.
00:36Actually, Pocahontas even agreed with me on that.
00:39She's been wanting to get rid of the debt ceiling
00:41because she said it's too violent.
00:43It is violent.
00:45So, I mean, anybody that votes against it,
00:49they voted to give a 58% tax increase and many other benefits.
00:55There would be no money for the border.
00:56You know, we have billions of dollars allocated to immigration,
01:00the border, keeping criminals out, getting criminals out, too.
01:03If that doesn't pass, you'll get a 68% tax increase.
01:09And I would say this.
01:10Any senator that votes against it, and that includes Democrats,
01:14I think they'll be finished in politics.
01:16On SALT specifically, do you think Senate Republicans or House Republicans
01:20will have to bend more in order to get the bill at large?
01:23I don't know. We're going to see how it works out.
01:24It's a very difficult issue, to be honest with you.
01:27It's very difficult, and I understand both sides.
01:29But we'll just have to see.
01:30Hopefully, a compromise or something's going to be made.
01:33But it's a very difficult issue.
01:35But remember that, you know, people say,
01:38what do you think, 68% tax.
01:41So all those numbers I told you, how well the economy is doing,
01:44it all gets wiped out.
01:45You'd have the largest tax increase in history by far, by three times,
01:50if they don't get the big, beautiful deal.
01:53I always say the great, big, beautiful deal.
01:55I put the word great in there.
01:57They took that out.
01:58It's going to be great, great piece.
01:59If we get that pass, it'll be the best, one of the greatest pieces.
02:02And that's just the beginning of a lot of things that are going to happen.
02:06Because we're going to get numbers down.
02:08We're going to get them way down.
02:09But that's the beginning.
02:10That's our big first step.
02:11But that's the most important piece of legislation.
02:14In terms of dollar value and everything else,
02:17there's nothing as big as that.
02:18You know, they thought that might be seven or eight bills.
02:21It's all in one.
02:22Speaking of taxes, starting in...
