00:00I was praying that they could save him.
00:17This is a personal thing.
00:19You guys shot him twice, and then said, remember me, bitch.
00:24We have two names.
00:25We have no idea who they are.
00:27If they go inside, we know we will have them at that point.
00:30Your adrenaline is going.
00:32It was very exciting.
00:33Without the surveillance in this case, we'd have been left with just names.
00:37He asked me where I left the gun.
00:41It was the biggest nightmare I've ever had in my life.
00:57Father of three, Rodney Thurber repairs computers for a living in the apartment he shares with
01:15his girlfriend, Nadia Cole.
01:17This one, honey?
01:18Perfect.
01:19Yes.
01:19I met Rodney in 2016 through an ad for a room.
01:25Just a very sweet and generous man.
01:28He loves spending time with his kids.
01:30I've needed some help, and I needed a place to stay.
01:35We just hit it off.
01:37Do you want family?
01:38Yeah.
01:39Rodney, like, working on computers, he was teaching me how to put them back together,
01:44how to take them apart, how to replace things that didn't work.
01:49He was a very smart man.
01:51He was constantly reading anything and everything.
01:54He had a very high IQ.
01:58We had fun together, especially learning the computer.
02:02He's going to do it.
02:03He made it fun.
02:05We connected very well.
02:12What's your movie?
02:13That day, we were just kind of lounged around all day.
02:17We were going to watch a movie and just sit and talk.
02:22It was just going to be the two of us.
02:26But we didn't get very far with him.
02:28Our dispatch received a 911 call about a shooting.
02:50The calling party was very hysterical, very emotional.
02:55There was yelling in the background.
02:56Moments later, dispatch receives another call about the same incident.
03:06Kansas City 911.
03:09Someone got stuck.
03:10Someone came here and shot this gun.
03:12The shooting had occurred in the second story of a converted house.
03:17Do you know him, the person who was shot?
03:19Yeah, Rodney.
03:20He's our neighbor.
03:21He just got shot in here.
03:22Can you come, please?
03:24He's losing consciousness.
03:26Officers were dispatched to the scene where the shooting had occurred.
03:34115 to 117 are almost in place.
03:39Officers arrived at Tracy Avenue, where the 911 call came from.
03:43There were witnesses that were downstairs waiting for police.
03:48Officers go up the stairs to the top apartment and locate a female and a victim.
03:55He is laying in a pool of blood and was not conscious when officers arrived.
03:59As medics arrive and police are still rendering aid, unfortunately, Rodney succumbs to his injuries and is pronounced deceased at the scene.
04:10I was praying that they would save him.
04:21That there's no way he could die.
04:25That man was too stubborn to die.
04:27He's going to live forever.
04:30He loved us.
04:31A homicide investigation was initiated at that point.
04:39Ma'am, can I get your name, please?
04:42Our calling party, who was identified as Nadia Cole, she was very emotional.
04:48Officers removed Nadia from the scene.
04:51She is clearly distraught after seeing Rodney die.
04:54She's placed into a warm police vehicle where an officer sits with her, tries to console her as best they can.
05:08Officers got brief statements from the downstairs neighbors who had kind of described hearing Mr. Thurber yelling.
05:18He shot me, called police.
05:21Can you describe his features?
05:22How old?
05:23How tall?
05:24No, sir.
05:25I know he was a white male.
05:27They gave us a description of a male running from the scene, but as far as specifics, it was very difficult.
05:36None of them were able to give us a very good description.
05:40Homicide detectives arrive on scene at 6.50 p.m.
05:45What do you got?
05:47I was the first investigator there.
05:49Mr. Thurber had suffered at least two gunshot wounds.
05:53One to his right side, one to the left shoulder.
06:00There was some damage to the back door where you could tell that it had been kicked.
06:04We found a shoe print that led me to believe that this is a personal thing.
06:16He knew what he was going there to do.
06:18He knew who he was looking for and what his intentions were.
06:29I was the on-call prosecutor, so I arrived on scene and made contact with the detectives that night.
06:35We ID'd the victim, got a witness to the shooting, and possible shoe prints of the suspect.
06:43The evidence that we were looking for were shell casings, spent bullets, things like that.
06:47There was an actual spent bullet that had lodged itself in the door.
06:54There were four shell casings that were recovered.
06:56They were a .380 caliber casing.
07:01Any sign of the murder weapon?
07:02We determined that the suspect probably took the firearm with him
07:05because it was not found on scene as we were processing Mr. Thurber's apartment.
07:13We located a cell phone, and what we determined was his bedroom.
07:22It was taken back to police headquarters for processing and downloading of information.
07:28If you can get into it, it's gold, because you know who they've been in contact with
07:32and what might have caused this to happen.
07:42We now had shell casings, a spent bullet, this shoe print.
07:48And now, you know, we found Mr. Thurber's phone,
07:51so we have a lot of really good leads to go on.
07:55We start to look for possible surveillance cameras.
07:57And the house directly north of where Mr. Thurber's residence was,
08:02there were surveillance cameras that were on the house.
08:06I was optimistically excited.
08:14The investigators take the footage from the neighbor's camera
08:17to the police department for review.
08:21You're just nervous and hopeful that the footage is actually captured on the camera.
08:27I was excited because it captured the actual driveway
08:38that someone would have had to,
08:39had gone down to get back to Rodney's apartment.
08:43We knew, if it's a car, if it's a person, we're going to capture something.
08:51Hold it.
09:00Show that again.
09:01About two minutes prior to the 911 call,
09:14a figure walks down the driveway.
09:16This is so close in proximity to the shooting
09:18that this is probably our suspect.
09:20Punch in.
09:25Pause it.
09:26Quality of the footage was not great,
09:32but it was enough to give us a figure wearing a coat,
09:35walking down the driveway at 6.11 p.m.
09:39See ya.
09:40This figure, it cuts through a gate and into the driveway
09:48to where Mr. Thurber's apartment is.
09:52Keep going.
09:55Approximately 6.14,
09:56which is about the time the 911 call comes in,
10:00the video captures what appears to be that same individual.
10:05They don't exit and go the way that they came.
10:08They turn and go the opposite direction
10:09towards Manuel Cleaver 2 Boulevard.
10:12That's our purpose, 100%.
10:14Anything happen before the man arrives?
10:22We went back approximately an hour
10:24and watched the video to see any comings and goings
10:27of anyone that was coming to or leaving the apartment.
10:31Approximately 5.39,
10:37we observe what appears to be a gray or silver BMW
10:42that pulls into the drive.
10:47Approximately 8 minutes after,
10:49we observe the same vehicle leaving,
10:52but going southbound towards Manuel Cleaver 2 Boulevard.
10:56The fact that the car turns and goes the same direction
10:59that our suspect leaves,
11:01it does kind of pique our interest.
11:05Does this car have something to do with this crime?
11:09Rewind.
11:11Punch in on the plates.
11:18Unfortunately, because of the lighting
11:20and the way that this camera is set up,
11:23we couldn't make out the front or the back
11:24license plates on us.
11:25Investigators switch gears.
11:31They interview Nadia Cole to unlock any clues she has
11:35about who shot her boyfriend.
11:37We have to be able to determine
11:39if they have information that's relevant to the shooting.
11:42We also have to eliminate them as a possible suspect.
11:44Okay, so then just kind of walk me through.
11:48What happened?
11:49I'm here, I knock at the door.
11:51We weren't expecting anybody,
11:54so Ronnie came with me.
11:59I went to open the door,
12:00and Ronnie says, don't open it.
12:04And normally he said that I already had it open,
12:07and the guy shot him twice,
12:10twice, and then said, remember me, bitch.
12:15Ronnie says, who are you?
12:17Tell us your name.
12:20And you said, I'm Patrick, and Caitlin's my friend.
12:26And I shot him again.
12:29So now we have two names.
12:31We have no idea who they are.
12:33That was very odd.
12:37It's not very common
12:38that we were able to get an information
12:40like that from a shooter in real time.
12:45Does that make sense to you?
12:46Some dude's going to come up and murder your boyfriend,
12:48but he's going to tell him his real name.
12:50He's not real bright, apparently.
12:54And describe him for me.
12:57Long, shoulder-length, brown hair.
12:59Kind of looked like he hadn't brushed it in days.
13:04Mm-hmm.
13:05Long, brown beard.
13:07Mm-hmm.
13:08Big, heavy coat.
13:11When she was asked,
13:12had she ever seen him before,
13:13she said, I had never seen him.
13:14I didn't know who he was.
13:17Not only do we have Patrick's name as our shooter,
13:20but we also have Caitlin.
13:22We asked Nadia, do you know Caitlin?
13:25And she says, I've seen her a few times.
13:29Tell me, how long are you going to tell me about Caitlin?
13:32She's white.
13:33Brown hair, blue-eyed.
13:35Girl next door look.
13:37Okay, what's Caitlin's last name?
13:39I don't know.
13:40She only knows her name is Caitlin.
13:42She doesn't know her last name.
13:44She doesn't know where she lives.
13:46She believed that Rodney and Caitlin
13:49had at one point had some kind of a romantic relationship.
13:53And now Nadia is in a relationship with Rodney.
13:56And that raises the question for us,
13:58is there a jealousy aspect to do with this?
14:02One of the weird things Nadia tells police
14:04is she says Caitlin had come over prior to the shooting
14:07and had left this little handgun
14:10and asked her to hold on to it.
14:12So tell me how Caitlin came to have you
14:18hold this gun for them, for her.
14:20She came over two or three days ago.
14:23She asked me if there was somewhere she could put it
14:25until she could come back and get it.
14:28And why did she want you to keep it again?
14:31She didn't really say.
14:34When Nadia gave us the information
14:36about holding the gun for Caitlin,
14:38obviously it raised some questions.
14:42A reasonable person would be like,
14:44why am I holding this gun for you?
14:46She could never really answer us
14:48other than, well, because Rodney said it was okay.
14:51Did you see Caitlin today?
14:53Yeah, she came to pick up the gun.
14:59So about 30 minutes before the shooting,
15:02Caitlin arrives at Rodney's apartment.
15:05Rodney gave her the gun and she left.
15:09Given the odd circumstances surrounding this gun,
15:13detectives ask Nadia if she's involved in the shooting.
15:16There's a lot of stuff that is not getting told right now.
15:20Okay?
15:21And I don't know why you're keeping some things from me.
15:27Did you shoot Rodney?
15:28No.
15:29Okay.
15:30I would never shoot him.
15:31Okay.
15:32Did Nadia have something to do with
15:35setting this up?
15:35Because, well, if I can't have him,
15:37then nobody's going to have him type thing.
15:39For us to be able to eliminate her as a suspect,
15:43we asked her to download her phone
15:44and she, without hesitating,
15:47said, absolutely, I will cooperate.
15:49Detective Wells informs Rodney's family of their loved one's murder.
16:00The hardest part of any homicide investigation or death investigation
16:04is making contact with the family.
16:08It was very emotional for them.
16:11Of course, they wanted more answers than I could give at that time.
16:14While investigators wait for the report on Nadia's phone data,
16:20they hunt for sources of surveillance footage in the area around Rodney's apartment.
16:25At the end of the block, right on Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard,
16:31they had just built a McDonald's,
16:33which we knew was going to have some kind of surveillance cameras.
16:37Back at the police department,
16:41investigators review the camera footage from the day of Rodney's murder.
16:45Knowing that our suspect had run south towards the McDonald's,
16:49we were hopeful that we could find footage
16:51that would show this individual on any of their cameras.
16:55It came from Tracy Avenue.
16:57Do you have any cameras pointed that way?
16:59We were focusing on the camera that is facing the Tracy Avenue
17:09overlooking the McDonald's parking lot.
17:11It was seen at the house around 6.14 p.m., so play from that.
17:15We wanted to see around the 911 call
17:17if there was going to be an individual that was walking south on Tracy.
17:20And around 6.14 p.m., we see an individual appear walking south on Tracy.
17:46Hold it.
17:47He's wearing the exact type of clothes
17:50that was described by Nadia as our shooter,
17:52coming from the exact direction of our crime scene.
17:55It's the guy who was at Rodney's apartment.
17:58Play on.
18:03Change cameras.
18:09Zoom in.
18:14Can you enhance it?
18:15We're unable to see the actual face of the suspect.
18:22Switch angles.
18:28Where is he going?
18:34Any other cameras facing that way?
18:39He ends up heading north and runs across the street and off camera.
18:44And we lose sight of him through the camera angles.
18:47It's frustrating because I still can't say who he is.
18:52Investigators continue to watch the footage
18:54in case the suspect returns.
18:58Play on.
18:58Rewind that.
19:11Rewind that.
19:16Stop.
19:17About 30 seconds after the suspect leaves camera view,
19:22when we see a silver sedan,
19:24similar size, make, and model
19:26of our suspect car from the previous footage.
19:31Change cameras.
19:31What are they waiting for?
19:45What are they waiting for?
19:50Three minutes passed, and the car's just sitting in the parking lot.
19:53Show me the other angles.
20:01And then we see our suspect.
20:04He starts running across the street back towards the McDonald's.
20:08Punch him.
20:08His coat is now open.
20:13His hood is off his head.
20:14And we see his long, brown hair.
20:17We see facial hair.
20:18Follow him.
20:21He actually runs up to this silver sedan.
20:24He gets in the passenger seat.
20:26The BMW backs out and leaves the parking lot.
20:34We now have the suspect,
20:36similar to the description that Nadia had given during her statement.
20:41However, we still don't have a license plate for the BMW.
20:45We still don't know who Caitlin is.
20:47And all we have for him is his name is Patrick.
20:51Patrick.
20:51This is all after the murder.
20:58But the car was seen at the house 30 minutes before.
21:01We wanted to rewind the McDonald's footage
21:03and look back towards that 548 time period
21:06where that sedan left the victim's house and drove south on Tracy.
21:10Okay, jump back half an hour.
21:21Okay, stop there.
21:25About a half hour prior to the murder
21:27is when we see the sedan drive through the McDonald's parking lot.
21:31That's the same car.
21:33It drives up and it gets in line with the drive-thru.
21:37We are very excited because we think
21:40we actually might see who's involved in this.
21:43Show me the payment counter.
21:44We're able to see who the driver is.
21:56It's a blonde-haired female
21:58matching the description that Nadia gave us of Caitlin.
22:02Show me the other cameras.
22:04We can see that there is an individual
22:19sitting in the passenger seat.
22:22Unfortunately, we're unable to see his face.
22:25Switch to the other camera.
22:28Punch in on the car tag.
22:34We can determine that it is a temporary tag
22:38which is issued when you buy a car
22:40but it's not visible.
22:48We've gotten to a point where we've collected
22:50all the information that we can get
22:52from the surveillance video.
22:54We're able to download Rodney's phone
23:06and in that phone
23:08we're able to locate text messages
23:10on the day of the homicide
23:11between Rodney and an individual
23:14who identifies herself as Kate.
23:17Look at this.
23:19This Kate individual is talking with Rodney
23:21about coming over and picking up a gun.
23:23It was very specific about
23:26she needed to get this gun back from him
23:28that her boyfriend was going to be mad
23:30if she didn't get it back.
23:32Fits with what Nadia said.
23:34All we have is Kate and a phone number.
23:38At the disposal of law enforcement
23:39are many systems
23:40including databases.
23:44We put the number in
23:45and it comes back to someone
23:47with the name of Caitlin Riffle.
23:49Once we had that
23:51then we start using
23:54analysts to help us
23:56to find a Facebook account.
23:58Got you.
24:00The photographs are
24:01kind of similar in appearance
24:03to the female that we see
24:05at the McDonald's
24:07in the drive-thru surveillance.
24:08This was another huge break in the case.
24:14But the text messages
24:15weren't the only thing
24:16we recovered off Rodney's phone.
24:19There was a photograph of a gun.
24:21A .380.
24:22We knew that we had
24:24.380 shell casings at the scene.
24:26Can you get a serial number off that?
24:31Some of it.
24:32Zooming in on
24:33the serial number itself
24:35we were able to read
24:36most of the serial number
24:38in this photograph
24:39that was on his phone.
24:40However, the first character
24:42was kind of distorted.
24:45That information
24:46was sent to
24:47detectives in our
24:48illegal firearms squad.
24:50Hey, it's Detective Wiles.
24:51I'm going to send you
24:52a serial number
24:52I need a trace on.
24:57Thanks.
25:02Wow.
25:04Look at this.
25:05There were multiple photos
25:07of a silver BMW
25:08and there were text messages
25:10connected to Caitlin
25:11asking him
25:11to try and sell
25:12this silver BMW.
25:14Not only did he have
25:16photographs
25:17of a .380 caliber handgun,
25:19the same type of caliber
25:20that was used to kill him
25:22on his phone,
25:23but also photographs
25:24of the same type of car
25:26that his murder
25:28and accomplice used.
25:30Hold on.
25:32Detective Wiles notices
25:37there's a temporary tag
25:39on the back of the car
25:40and this temporary tag
25:41has the VIN number.
25:43I'll look up the partial.
25:46He runs us
25:46through the police database
25:47to see if this VIN
25:48is associated
25:49with any police reports.
25:57Got it.
25:58It was determined
26:00that that car was stolen.
26:00five days prior
26:02to the homicide.
26:04It's been found.
26:06We got lucky.
26:07The day after the homicide,
26:09this car was abandoned
26:10in a Walmart parking lot
26:12in Lee's Summit, Missouri.
26:15It's possible
26:16that the security cameras
26:17at the Walmart
26:18captured images
26:19of the suspect
26:20and Caitlyn.
26:22Investigators make the 21-mile journey
26:24to Lee's Summit
26:25to review the store's
26:26surveillance footage.
26:28We're trying to get
26:30a better look
26:30at the suspect's face.
26:35They have surveillance video
26:37that covers their parking lots,
26:39which is where the car was dumped.
26:40The male subject
26:54gets out of the passenger seat.
26:56Which is the next camera?
27:05He's heading towards the store.
27:08The subject walks
27:08towards the doors
27:10of the Walmart.
27:11If they go inside,
27:13we know we will get
27:14clear images
27:15of their face.
27:16We know we will have them
27:18at that point.
27:19He's heading towards the store.
27:31He's just strolling
27:33into Walmart
27:33like it's any other day.
27:38It's stopped.
27:42Begun.
27:43I was excited,
27:44but I knew
27:45that there were still
27:46additional steps
27:47that we had to take
27:48to prove
27:49that this
27:51is Patrick.
27:54Follow him.
27:58We track
27:59this individual
28:00we know as Patrick now
28:02through the Walmart.
28:03Track him to the till.
28:05He ends up making a purchase.
28:07Can we pull up
28:08that transaction record?
28:12He buys a T
28:13and we're able
28:14to track that purchase.
28:17Walmart gives us
28:18a point-of-sale receipt
28:19and tells us
28:20that he used a gift card
28:22to make that purchase.
28:24Do you know
28:24where he got the card?
28:26The gift card
28:26was purchased
28:2721 hours earlier
28:28from a different Walmart
28:29in Independence,
28:31nine miles north
28:32of Lee's Summit.
28:34This transaction
28:36for this gift card
28:37occurred two hours
28:38after the homicide.
28:41Detectives are able
28:50to recover the footage
28:52from the Walmart
28:53and Independence.
28:55Okay.
28:55Start with the camera
28:56over the parking lot.
29:02Okay, the transaction
29:03was for 8.50 p.m.,
29:05so let's play
29:06about an hour
29:07before that.
29:13Around 8.09,
29:15we're able to see
29:15this silver sedan BMW
29:17pull into the parking lot.
29:19What's up?
29:19How you doing?
29:24A female
29:25gets out of the car.
29:27Free sit there.
29:29Punch in.
29:30Is that Caitlyn?
29:34This female
29:35takes two children
29:36inside.
29:43And then we see
29:44another person
29:45get out of the car
29:45and walk towards
29:47the front door.
29:48Switch to inside.
29:50As the doors open,
29:51we start watching
29:52the interior cameras.
29:56It appears to be
29:58Caitlyn with her two kids
30:00walking in the store.
30:03And we see our suspect.
30:06He returned something
30:07and they were not able
30:08to give him cash.
30:09They gave him
30:09a Walmart gift card.
30:12Follow him outside.
30:18Patrick walks back
30:19to the car.
30:23Caitlyn follows
30:23minutes later.
30:26This footage shows
30:28that Caitlyn
30:29is with this individual
30:30after the homicide
30:32just like she was
30:33prior to the homicide.
30:39Investigators check in
30:40with Rodney's girlfriend,
30:41Nadia Cole,
30:42to see if she recognizes
30:44the woman
30:44from the surveillance footage.
30:47Nadia is staying
30:48in a hotel
30:49for her own safety.
30:50I presented her
30:56with some photographs
30:57that we had taken
30:58from the surveillance video
31:00at the McDonald's
31:01in the drive-thru.
31:03And without hesitating,
31:05she said,
31:05yes, that is Caitlyn.
31:07That's the Caitlyn I know
31:08that Rodney was in contact with.
31:11Police also show Nadia
31:12the images of a gun.
31:14When the detectives
31:15showed me
31:16a picture of it,
31:18I recognized it
31:20and it looked similar
31:22to the one
31:23she had handed me.
31:26This has been
31:27extremely helpful.
31:28The detectives
31:29are closing in
31:30on the suspects,
31:32but Nadia
31:32is feeling the toll.
31:35I didn't have
31:36anybody to talk to,
31:37so I was left
31:38on my own.
31:39I was mad.
31:42I was hurt.
31:43I was scared.
31:48It was the biggest nightmare
31:50I've ever had
31:51in my life.
31:56Investigators know
31:57that Caitlyn
31:58is Caitlyn Riffle.
31:59They now need
32:00to identify Patrick.
32:02One of the items
32:03that we found
32:04on Rodney's phone
32:05was the photo
32:06of the .380 handgun.
32:09We were able
32:10to trace
32:10the serial number
32:11on the gun.
32:13We were able
32:13to determine
32:14that it was legally
32:15purchased at a store
32:16in Lee Summit, Missouri
32:17by Stephanie Powell.
32:20Can you look her up?
32:33Look at this.
32:34He has a son
32:36by the name
32:38of Patrick Powell.
32:41Can you pull up
32:42his license?
32:50Photo's old.
32:51When we run
32:52his Missouri
32:53Department of Revenue
32:54driver's license photo,
32:56he has short hair.
32:58In the surveillance video,
33:00the suspect
33:01had long hair,
33:02so our first thought
33:04is, has he changed
33:05what he looks like
33:06or is this
33:06a completely
33:07different person?
33:12Investigators
33:13search for a link
33:14between Caitlyn
33:15and Patrick Powell.
33:17There is
33:18an application
33:19on a computer
33:20that shows
33:21when anyone
33:21pawns something.
33:23Got a hit
33:24on Caitlyn's phone.
33:25Showed that she
33:26had sold a phone
33:27at a kiosk
33:28at another Walmart
33:29and independence
33:30that takes
33:31a picture
33:31of your ID
33:32and it showed
33:33the date,
33:34the time
33:35that the transaction
33:36was made.
33:39There was
33:40surveillance video
33:41of her selling
33:42the phone
33:42with a person
33:43that did resemble
33:44very much
33:45the photo
33:46that Patrick had
33:47for his driver's license.
33:49He had cut his hair
33:50and shaved his face.
33:52We were able
33:53to retrieve that phone.
33:54It was the phone
33:55that she had been using
33:56to communicate
33:57with Rodney
33:57to die of the burn.
34:02We've gotten
34:03to a point
34:03where we've collected
34:04all the information.
34:06It's time
34:06to talk to them
34:07in regard
34:08to their role
34:09in the homicide
34:10of Rodney Thurber.
34:13I authored
34:14a court order
34:15for Patrick Powell's
34:17cellular device
34:17and her tactical
34:18support squad
34:19found a residence
34:21where they thought
34:21the phone was at.
34:23It was tracked
34:24to Buckner, Missouri,
34:26which is about
34:2730 miles east
34:28of Kansas City.
34:31They advised us
34:32we have Patrick
34:34and Caitlin
34:34there in a vehicle
34:36and we are about
34:37to try to stop
34:38the vehicle
34:39and take it
34:39into custody.
34:41Adrenaline is going.
34:42This is all
34:43going to come
34:43to a head.
34:44It was very exciting
34:45for us.
34:45As the officers
34:53are following his car
34:54it ends up
34:56parking
34:56at a quick trip.
34:58Two individuals
34:59get out of that car.
35:00A white female
35:01looking like Caitlin
35:02and a white male
35:03looking like Patrick.
35:05As they walk
35:05towards the door
35:06at the quick trip
35:07officers move in
35:08and take them
35:09into custody.
35:10Police inform
35:20Nadia of the arrests.
35:22I was relieved.
35:25Everybody thought
35:26I'd shot him.
35:28Every relationship
35:29has problems
35:30but I would
35:31never hurt him.
35:35Investigators
35:36take Patrick Powell
35:37and Caitlin Riffle
35:38to the police department
35:39for questioning.
35:47You've been
35:47read your rights?
35:52So, uh,
35:53why don't you
35:54walk us through
35:54what happened?
35:59I got nothing to say.
36:01He almost had
36:01a smirk on his face.
36:02He knew he wasn't
36:03going to talk to me.
36:05Patrick refuses
36:06to cooperate
36:06so detectives
36:08press Caitlin
36:08for answers.
36:10I don't know
36:11anything about
36:12anyone being killed.
36:14Caitlin gives
36:15a statement
36:15to police
36:16and initially
36:17denies
36:18any involvement
36:19or any knowledge
36:20of what occurred.
36:22Can I show you
36:22a couple pictures?
36:24Um, yeah.
36:25Okay.
36:26They confront her
36:26with screenshots
36:27that show her
36:28at the McDonald's,
36:29show her text messages
36:31that occurred,
36:32and her story evolves.
36:33Okay, he asked me
36:35where I left the gun
36:37and I...
36:38Who asked you where?
36:40Patrick asked me
36:41where I left the gun
36:42and said he was
36:42going to go ask
36:43for it himself.
36:44We finally got her
36:45to the event
36:45that they went
36:45and got the gun.
36:47So when he comes
36:47running back to your car
36:48to get in,
36:50what did he say happened?
36:53Nothing.
36:56She was confronted
36:56with the fact
36:57that we had an eyewitness
36:58that says
36:59she was in the apartment
37:00moments before the murder.
37:02You see Kaitlyn today?
37:04Yeah, she came
37:05to pick up the gun.
37:08She said,
37:09after she gave
37:09the gun to you,
37:11that it was
37:12a very short amount
37:13of time
37:13before there was
37:14a knock at the door.
37:15I think I just...
37:16We need a lawyer
37:17for anything
37:18in the question.
37:19Kaitlyn asked
37:20for a lawyer,
37:21and we end
37:21the interrogation.
37:28Patrick and Kaitlyn
37:29are charged
37:29with first-degree murder.
37:31Both plead not guilty.
37:34At the trials,
37:35prosecutors stepped
37:36through the events
37:37that led to
37:38Rodney Thurber's murder.
37:40The day of the homicide,
37:42Kaitlyn and Rodney
37:43had been texting.
37:44They had been texting
37:45about this gun.
37:47They were texting
37:47about her coming over
37:48and getting this gun.
37:50And we know
37:50the surveillance shows
37:52her carpool
37:53in that driveway.
37:54We know Nadia Cole
37:55says Kaitlyn came
37:56in that house,
37:57got that gun.
37:58We know that
38:00that silver car
38:01with Kaitlyn
38:01in the driver's seat
38:03and a male
38:03in the passenger seat
38:04went through that
38:05McDonald's drive-thru.
38:07Patrick walks
38:08to Rodney's home
38:09minutes later.
38:10Patrick went over there
38:11on foot
38:12by himself,
38:14armed with that
38:15handgun.
38:16He knew he was
38:17going to shoot Rodney.
38:18The gun that we know
38:22Kaitlyn gave back
38:22to Patrick
38:23was a .380 handgun,
38:25the same caliber
38:26that matches
38:27the shell casings
38:28that were found
38:29at the scene.
38:33We know that individual
38:35ran away
38:35and ultimately
38:37got into that
38:38silver car
38:38that Kaitlyn
38:39was waiting for him
38:40to drive him away.
38:41Just two hours
38:45after the homicide,
38:46we catch them
38:47on the Walmart surveillance
38:48in that same
38:49silver BMW.
38:50Patrick
38:51wearing the same
38:52clothes
38:52with the fur
38:53on the coat,
38:55the pink shirt
38:55and the green pants
38:57inside that Walmart.
38:59The shoe print
39:00found at the crime scene
39:01matched neither suspect
39:02but the pictures
39:03of the gun
39:04and the car
39:05that Kaitlyn sent
39:06to Rodney
39:07incriminated
39:08both her
39:08and Patrick.
39:10Stephanie Powell,
39:11the gun's legal owner,
39:12had no involvement
39:13in or knowledge
39:14of any criminal activity.
39:19When we tried
39:20to establish
39:20a motive
39:21in this case,
39:22we weren't exactly
39:23sure why.
39:24Maybe Patrick's
39:25jealous of Rodney
39:27because of the
39:28relationship
39:28that he and
39:29Kaitlyn had
39:31previously.
39:32I think he was
39:34trying to keep
39:36them two apart.
39:38He was jealous
39:40over the relationship
39:41that Rodney
39:42and Kaitlyn had.
39:43It's clear
39:44from all the evidence
39:45that Nadia Cole
39:46was just an innocent
39:47bystander.
39:48She was a crucial witness
39:49for us in this case.
39:53Patrick Powell
39:54was sentenced
39:54to life
39:55without the possibility
39:56of parole
39:56for murder
39:57in the first degree
39:58and 10 years
39:59for armed criminal action.
40:02Kaitlyn Riffle
40:03was sentenced
40:04to 20 years
40:05for murder
40:05in the second degree
40:06and three years
40:07for armed criminal action.
40:11This murder
40:11wouldn't have occurred
40:12but for her actions.
40:14She was the getaway driver.
40:16She's the one
40:16that provided
40:17the murder weapon.
40:18But ultimately,
40:19she's not the one
40:19that pulled the trigger.
40:22Without the surveillance
40:23in this case,
40:25we'd have been left
40:25with just names.
40:27We would not have been
40:28able to put
40:28our suspects together
40:29in the moments
40:30after the homicide.
40:31I never said goodbye
40:35to Rodney
40:36and I'm not going to.
40:37But I still talk to him.
40:40He's still a part of me.
40:41He's still a part of my life.
40:49I'll miss Rodney's smile
40:51and the way
40:55he made people feel.
40:59He was a great man.
41:01that loved helping others.
41:11Next time on
41:12See No Evil.
41:13My sister has been missing
41:14for almost five days now.
41:17There was more to this
41:17than just a missing person's case.
41:20We're certain
41:21that some type of foul play
41:22has been involved.
41:24We knew that they were lying
41:26because of the CCTV.
41:27We knew that they were lying.
