00:01Nearly two months on from the unprecedented power outage that sparked chaos in Spain and Portugal,
00:06the Spanish government has presented a report on its causes.
00:11According to the country's environment minister,
00:13the partly state-owned grid operator had miscalculated power capacity needs,
00:17and some of the private generators meant to regulate the grid's voltage failed to do so.
00:24The power disconnections in this case were triggered by power surges.
00:28The power plants that should have controlled voltage, and many of them were paid to do so,
00:33did not absorb all the reactive power that was expected in the context of high voltages.
00:41There had been suspicions that a cyber attack was to blame.
00:45Back on the 28th of April, Spain and Portugal were disconnected from the European electricity grid for several hours.
00:52The incident saw traffic lights cut out, left residents without ATMs and Internet access,
00:58as well as trapping people in lifts and trains.
01:01The Spanish government's delay in providing answers triggered scrutiny of the country's energy model,
01:06with the opposition suggesting that a growing reliance on renewables may have played a role.
01:11But the government has stated numerous times that the country's renewable energy output was not to blame.
